Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. (Whitbread 1992: xii) The recent appearance of a woman given the nickname ‘Gentleman Jack’ in a show focused on a queer woman depicts a subject who writes her life into encrypted journals. -

Epilogue itchcock and his works continue to experience life among generation Y Hand beyond, though it is admittedly disconcerting to walk into an undergraduate lecture hall and see few, if any, lights go on at the mention of his name. Disconcerting as it may be, all ill feelings are forgotten when I watch an auditorium of eighteen- to twenty-one-year-olds transported by the emotions, the humor, and the compulsions of his cinema. But certainly the college classroom is not the only guardian of Hitchcock ’ s fl ame. His fi lms still play at retrospectives, in fi lm festivals, in the rising number of fi lm studies classes in high schools, on Turner Classic Movies, and other networks devoted to the “ oldies. ” The wonderful Bates Motel has emerged as a TV serial prequel to Psycho , illustrating the formative years of Norman Bates; it will see a second season in the coming months. Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour are still in strong syndication. Both his fi lms and television shows do very well in collections and singly on Amazon and other e-commerce sites. -

These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. We PULL BACK to reveal BLOOD spewing in slow motion as a ROMAN GUARD lazily flies through the FRAME, dying from massive wounds. RAMP TO NORMAL SPEED as he crashes to the ground, dead. THREE MORE GUARDS rush in, stepping over their fallen comrade to confront the cause of his brutal end. SPARTACUS greets them, his sword drawing fresh blood. He moves with deadly purpose, striking the Guards down in a gory display. NOBLE ROMANS scream as they rush to flee the slaughter. Spartacus ignores them, bellowing for the only man he seeks. SPARTACUS Batiatus! A threat. A challenge. A promise of impending doom... INT. It did make a short trip to Sadler’s Wells in November with two p r o g r a m m e s a n d f i v e performances over four days. The first one, Made in Germany, featured excerpts from works choreographed in Germany for t h e c o m p a n y . T h o u g h presented in three groups with two intervals, (like a triple bill), there were thirteen items, mostly pas-de-deux and solos, and only one piece, given last, for a larger group of dancers.
