The business has expanded rapidly and now they have a new brew house that is located in a former fish factory in the Sapowei art zone district in Xiamen, China. David and Felix are designers by profession and had not the slightest idea that they would end up brewing beer, they had little knowledge of the worldwide craft beer trend - when coming to China in 2012, it just started. The first beer kit they made was comprised of a self-built mash/lauter ton and the estr was bought off taobao. They began by brewing on the roof of their apartment. The Brewers leaned more from Home-brew Blog’s in Germany and the States and when they gave the first brew (Yang Mei Wit Beer) to their Chinese friends, it took off immediately. It’s only been 3 years in China and 2 years brewing beer and it’s still a big experiment, in fact everybody is welcome to experiment in Xiamen, whether its making beer, music, interactive art, design or food, there’s a stage for everyone. Our membership is open to all experience levels and walks of life, ranging from professional brewers to beginners looking to brew their first batch, and we hope to give everyone a friendly atmosphere to share knowledge and exchange ideas. Our organization gathers twice a month, one meeting in English and the other in Chinese, however all are welcome because we share a common language = “beer”. Typical meetings feature a technical presentation on a brewing topic, a tasting of the “style-of- the-month”. We now rotate our meetings locations at different beer venues of excellence in Beijing. All are welcome to our monthly gatherings (membership not required) and we encourage you to bring your brew to share. All activities are voluntary (events, tastings, equipment and ingredient co-op) and costs are shared among all members via a small, annual membership fee. 9 SLOW BOAT BREWERY Bionic Brew Contact: Jo Zhou, Manager Phone: 132 4382 0861 Email: [email protected] An independent craft brewery in Shenzhen, China, making dangerously delicious ales to battle the watery commercial cat piss that passes for beer. Being a Wisconsin Boy by nature, lack of access to decent beer was a sincere challenge while living in Hefei. The answer came in the form of doing what my daddy taught me and brewing up some happiness. Before long, word spread around the city and interest mounted. Before we knew it we were carrying cases all over the city. During 2013 we decided it was time to get serious and take the oversized hobby to the next level. We are proud to now being brewing on a larger scale and bringing happiness to more and more people. We brew a mix of American, Belgian, and German style beers but most importantly we brew beers we love and don’t worry too much about what categories they fall into! I approach the teahouse as a complex, shifting social space embedded in wider discourses and historical processes, and use the ethnographic portrait as a basis for exploration into several themes in the anthropology of urban China. The first chapter provides an historical background and deals with the rise, fall and revival of teahouse culture in the changing uses of urban space in the twentieth century.

  • 2018 Lauder Global Business Insight Report
2018 THE LAUDER GLOBAL BUSINESS INSIGHT REPORT Facing — and Embracing — Change INTRODUCTION THE LAUDER GLOBAL BUSINESS INSIGHT REPORT 2018 Facing — and Embracing — Change Across the world, business leaders, policy makers and ordinary citizens are coming together to effect change and create a better tomorrow. As they look to what worked in the past, they face the future knowing that growing pains are inevitable. In this special report, students from the Joseph H. Lauder Institute for Management & International Studies traveled the globe to offer unique perspectives gleaned from interviews, observation and research into the ways countries are confronting change on a global scale. Dive into the politics of culture as developing economies work to redefine their identity in the face of unprecedented global change. A similar struggle is taking place across Europe, where the resettlement of millions of refugees is raising tough questions about how to integrate them into society. All countries seek to expand their economies, but the best path forward isn’t always clear. The divergent interests of stakeholders, budgetary constraints, history, ideology and other factors combine to create formidable obstacles to growth. In Brazil, for example, the national bank is working to emerge from a recent scandal, redefine itself and establish new ways of doing business that will help spur the economy. Meanwhile, a project in South Africa is helping black entrepreneurs hurdle the legacy barriers left from the days of apartheid. Technology also poses a challenge for nations just trying to keep up with the lightning speed of change. E-commerce and big data have the potential to revolutionize business in Brazil and Colombia, but success requires a heavy investment in infrastructure.
