Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre, Film and Television University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ December 2008 © Caitriona Noonan, 2008 Abstract This thesis examines the way in which media professionals negotiate the occupational challenges related to television and radio production. It has used the subject of religion and its treatment within the BBC as a microcosm to unpack some of the dilemmas of contemporary broadcasting. In recent years religious programmes have evolved in both form and content leading to what some observers claim is a “renaissance” in religious broadcasting. However, any claims of a renaissance have to be balanced against the complex institutional and commercial constraints that challenge its long-term viability. This research finds that despite the BBC’s public commitment to covering a religious brief, producers in this style of programming are subject to many of the same competitive forces as those in other areas of production. Furthermore those producers who work in-house within the BBC’s Department of Religion and Ethics believe that in practice they are being increasingly undermined through the internal culture of the Corporation and the strategic decisions it has adopted. This is not an intentional snub by the BBC but a product of the pressure the Corporation finds itself under in an increasingly competitive broadcasting ecology, hence the removal of the protection once afforded to both the department and the output.

    Charles Wood FESTIVAL & SUMMER SCHOOL Charles Wood Charles Wood, the renowned musician and composer, was born at 11, Vicars’ Hill, Armagh in 1866 and received his early musical education as a chorister in the cathedral opposite his home. He later studied at the Royal College of Music and became a Professor there before succeeding Stanford, another fine Irish musician and composer, as Professor of Music at Cambridge University. When Wood died in 1926 he left behind a legacy of over 250 sacred works, plus a large number of hymn tunes. His other compositions include songs, music for Greek plays and chamber music. But it is largely for his sacred music that he is remembered today and this is why the focus of the Summer School is music in worship. Welcome Message We are delighted to announce the programme for the 2019 Charles Wood Festival and Summer School. We’ve over 30 top-notch events for you to choose from in churches across Armagh, plus a visit to Portadown with our Girls’ Choir. This year we’ll welcome the wonderful Ulster Orchestra to perform with the Charles Wood Singers. They’ll be conducted in a recording for BBC Radio 3 by our Artistic Director, David Hill, with readings by celebrity Gloria Hunniford. Gloria will also be the guest speaker at a special meal just before that event. Don’t miss it! Our opening concert will set the standard for the week, featuring the winners of BBC Northern Ireland’s Senior School Choir of the Year, Thornhill College Londonderry, and Martin Baker – organist royalty and Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral London.
