Panorama: The Secret Letters of Pope John Paul II TX: 15/02/2016 Dur: 29'00" Broadcaster: BBC 1 Production Company: Blakeway This film – for the BBC, Arte and PBS - made headlines in newspapers around the world. It was the result of a 4-year investigation by journalist Edward Stourton. He discovered hundreds of letters and photographs that revealed an intense emotional relationship between Pope John Paul 11 and a married woman, Polish born American philosopher, Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which spanned 30 years (from his time as a Cardinal until his death as Pope). The letters had been acquired for a six figure sum by the Polish National Library, and were then hidden away while the process of securing sainthood for John Paul was in progress. The revelations turned what might have been a history programme into a current affairs investigation. It would seem there was a cover-up. Following a tip-off that the letters existed, it took two years to track them down and another year to gain access to them. It was clear Anna Teresa had fallen in love with John Paul and had declared that love. There is no evidence that the relationship was physical, but the prudent course would have been to end it. John Paul was determined it should continue, and even tried to justify it in religious terms. The letters had been sold to the Polish Library by Anna Teresa after the death of her husband, and Stourton assumed that the archive consisted simply of John Paul’s letters to her.

Centre for Cultural Policy Research Department of Theatre, Film and Television University of Glasgow Glasgow G12 8QQ December 2008 © Caitriona Noonan, 2008 Abstract This thesis examines the way in which media professionals negotiate the occupational challenges related to television and radio production. It has used the subject of religion and its treatment within the BBC as a microcosm to unpack some of the dilemmas of contemporary broadcasting. In recent years religious programmes have evolved in both form and content leading to what some observers claim is a “renaissance” in religious broadcasting. However, any claims of a renaissance have to be balanced against the complex institutional and commercial constraints that challenge its long-term viability. This research finds that despite the BBC’s public commitment to covering a religious brief, producers in this style of programming are subject to many of the same competitive forces as those in other areas of production. Furthermore those producers who work in-house within the BBC’s Department of Religion and Ethics believe that in practice they are being increasingly undermined through the internal culture of the Corporation and the strategic decisions it has adopted. This is not an intentional snub by the BBC but a product of the pressure the Corporation finds itself under in an increasingly competitive broadcasting ecology, hence the removal of the protection once afforded to both the department and the output.

    Research & Development White Paper WHP 289 March 2015 Covering the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games using IP Studio Alexander Rawcliffe BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION White Paper WHP 289 Covering the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games using IP Studio Alexander Rawcliffe Abstract BBC Research & Development’s IP Studio project is investigating the use of an IP-based infrastructure for live broadcasting, using a combination of theoretical design and experimental prototyping. During the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, IP Studio technology was used to produce a live ‘IP-end-to-end’ outside broadcast. Using network connectivity provided by Virgin Media, JANET and the BBC, live ultra-high definition video was captured from cameras in several competition venues, and delivered into a software-defined production system. Ancillary production facilities such as talkback and camera tally indicators were also implemented using the same IP network. This facilitated a highly distributed production workflow, with operational tasks being undertaken at several sites throughout the UK. Final programme output was delivered over IP using MPEG-DASH, and also broadcast from selected existing digital terrestrial television (DTT) transmitter locations using HEVC compression over DVB-T2. This paper describes the components and configuration of the IP Studio system used during the games, and explores the geographically distributed, collaborative workflows it enabled.
