Liberal Party of Canada Forum on Peace in Sri

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Liberal Party of Canada’s Greater Toronto MPs will host a forum on Canada’s role in fostering a peaceful resolution to the civil war in Sri Lanka Uxbridge, Ontario – 21 December 2007 "In an era when we have too many reminders that strife anywhere is a threat to peace and security everywhere, Canada has both an opportunity and an obligation to foster peace in Sri Lanka." Derek Lee MP, the Liberal member for Scarborough - Rouge River, will host the Liberal Party of Canada’s GTA forum on the civil war in Sri Lanka, and on what steps Canada can take to foster peace in one of the world’s longest and most brutal civil wars. Bob Rae, the Liberal Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs and an active proponent of peace in Sri Lanka, will give the keynote address. Akaash Maharaj, president of the New Liberalism Ginger Group, will moderate the discussion The panellists will include: Alan Tonks MP, the GTA Caucus Chair; the Hon John McCallum MP, former Minister of Defence; the Hon John McKay MP, member for Scarborough - Guildwood; the Hon Jim Karygiannis MP, the member for Scarborough – Agincourt; and Jonathan Kay, National Post Comment Editor. CC24.3 REPORT FOR ACTION Declaring the Office of Councillor, Ward 22 - Scarborough Agincourt Vacant and Deciding the Method to Fill the Vacancy Date: September 24, 2020 To: City Council From: City Clerk Wards: All SUMMARY This report outlines the options for Council to fill the vacancy in Ward 22 – Scarborough Agincourt as a result of Jim Karygiannis' removal from office. The City of Toronto Act, 2006 and the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 together prescribe rules and impose deadlines with respect to filling a vacancy. Council previously declared the office for Councillor, Ward 22 vacant at its June 29, 2020 meeting following a June 24, 2020 decision from the Court of Appeal for Ontario that resulted in the removal of Jim Karygiannis from office. Council deferred making a decision about whether to fill the vacancy through appointment or by-election until the September 30, 2020 meeting. On August 5, 2020 the Court of Appeal granted a stay of the June 24, 2020 decision while Jim Karygiannis sought leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada. As such, Jim Karygiannis was returned to office pending the decision on the application for leave to appeal. The Supreme Court of Canada on September 24, 2020 dismissed the leave to appeal application and consequently the June 24, 2020 decision that resulted in the removal of Jim Karygiannis from office became effective immediately creating a vacancy in Ward 22. City Council may choose to fill the vacancy by appointment or direct the City Clerk to hold a by-election. If Council chooses to fill the vacancy by holding a by-election, Council may also decide whether to authorize a contribution rebate program.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday April 26, 2010 Contact: Jack Chadirdjian (514) 217-1273 The Canadian-Armenian Community Commemorated the 95th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, In Front of the Parliament Hill and the Armenian Genocide Monument of Montreal Ottawa – The Canadian-Armenian community and Armenians around the world commemorated the 95th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a crime against humanity that has been recognized by numerous countries including Canada but constantly denied by the successive governments of Turkey. On this occasion, Armenians around the world mourned the 1.5 million Armenians exterminated during the Genocide, celebrated their rebirth, and renewed their commitment to stand for truth and justice for all the victims of genocides in the world. All of the Armenian organizations operating in Canada had united under the auspices of our three religious denominations and jointly organized events across Canada commemorating this milestone anniversary. These events started on April 14 and culminated on Parliament Hill on Saturday, April 24. This significant memorial ceremony recalled the horrendous crime against humanity. Three members of the House of Commons accompanied the survivors and their descendants to denounce the Denial of the Armenian Genocide and to place flowers around the Eternal Flame. There were also more than two thousand Canadian-Armenians from Montreal, Laval, Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Cambridge, St. Catharines in the commemorative event. The sombre commemoration began at 12:30 p.m. on April 24, in front of the Parliament Hill. After the welcoming remarks of master of ceremonies Mr. Chahe Tanachian, and Ms. Taline Abrakian, the crowd welcomed the 134 participants of the commemorative march organized by the Armenian Youth Federation.
