The West Coast region is the centre of Tasmania’s mining industry, with major, long-term producers located at Mt Lyell, Rosebery and Savage River. In 2011, approximately 2.8 million tonnes of mineral resources were moved out of the West Coast, the majority for export through Burnie Port and a private facility at Port Latta. Several major new mines are proposed in the area, the majority of which will use the Murchison Highway as the primary freight transport route, reflecting the dispersed and remote location of most mine sites. The West Coast region also has an expanding aquaculture industry, focused on Macquarie Harbour. In 2011, the Murchison Highway carried 260 000 tonnes of freight, which is forecast to increase to 650 000 tonnes by 2030 The Murchison Highway between Cradle Mountain Development Road and Anthony Road is part of the primary road freight corridor connecting Zeehan, Strahan and Queenstown and most major mines on the West Coast, with Burnie Port and the National Network. The existing Highway does not meet the Tasmanian guidelines for High Productivity Vehicles. The road has narrow lane widths, tight curves and insufficient overtaking opportunities. The Tasmanian Government has undertaken significant strategic and corridor planning on the West Coast, including joint development with industry and local government of the Western Tasmania Industry Infrastructure Study (2012). The Government has identified a package of projects to improve efficiency and safety on the Murchison Highway between Cradle Mountain Development Road and Anthony Road, starting with a $21 million investment by the Tasmanian Government on priority sections of the Murchison Highway. The upgrades proposed under Nation Building 2 build on this investment, to deliver an efficient, safe and compliant heavy vehicle freight corridor. Is this a new submission? AVEBURY NICKEL PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION • Avebury nickel mine development and production are well advanced. 45,200 tonnes of run-of-mine ore has been delivered to the mill stockpile. Ore geometry and grades encountered to date are as expected. • Mill construction is at full pace and commissioning is scheduled to commence by end 1st Quarter 2008. The main buildings are complete and key plant components are installed; pipework and wiring has commenced. • Stage 1 of the project is designed to mill 900,000 tonnes of ore annually producing 8,500 tonnes of nickel (“Ni”) in concentrates. The business plan currently extends to June 2016 but the project is expected to expand production and extend its mine life because resources are continuing to expand each year. MINE AREA RESOURCES • Resources have expanded by 10% during 2007 and were reported in January 2008 at 14 million tonnes grading 1.04% Ni containing 145,600 tonnes of Ni at a 0.7% Ni cut-off grade. Ore Reserves are being revised based on the new, expanded resources and are expected to expand significantly. • Drill hole A217 intersected 4.0m @ 1.8% Ni from a thick zone of 18.0m @ 1.1% at East Avebury, confirming the high prospectivity for mine extensions east of the current mine area. • A new mine exploration target called North Viking has been discovered in the western part of the mine area.

    Tasmanian Geological Survey Tasmania Record 1997/04 Interim Management Plan for the Mt Read RAP A Co-operatively Formulated Plan by Government Agencies, Statutory Bodies and Relevant Land Users for the Mt Read RAP SUMMARY The formulation of this plan by a co-operative committee, comprising representatives from Government Agencies, statutory bodies and relevant land users, is a ‘first’ for Tasmania. The effort by these various parties with an interest in the Mt Read area demonstrates the commitment to protect the area in the absence of any formal reserve. The Mt Read RAP is almost entirely covered by two current mining leases, ML7M/91 over the Henty gold deposit and ML28M/93 associated with the Rosebery silver-lead-zinc mine, and exploration licence EL5/96 held by Renison Limited. The RAP is within the Mt Read Strategic Prospectivity Zone, which means that if the status of the land is changed and this effectively prevents activities on the current mining tenements, then compensation may be payable. The vegetation around Lake Johnston is acknowledged as having exceptionally high conservation and scientific values, which is why a management plan for the area was written in 1992 and adopted by the lessee. There is a need to expand the scope of the previous plan so that all users of the Mt Read area are aware of the need to abide by measures to protect the vegetation. In addition, media reports have generated much interest in the ancient stands of Huon pine growing in one part of the Mt Read RAP. Studies indicate that the existing Huon pine on the site comprises one or a few individuals which may have vegetatively reproduced on the site since the last glaciation.
