(DLR): an Undescribed Behavior in Bumble Bees
The disturbance leg-lift response (DLR): an undescribed behavior in bumble bees Christopher A. Varnon, Noelle Vallely, Charlie Beheler and Claudia Coffin Department of Psychology, Converse College, Spartanburg, SC, United States of America ABSTRACT Background. Bumble bees, primarily Bombus impatiens and B. terrestris, are becoming increasingly popular organisms in behavioral ecology and comparative psychology research. Despite growing use in foraging and appetitive conditioning experiments, little attention has been given to innate antipredator responses and their ability to be altered by experience. In this paper, we discuss a primarily undescribed behavior, the disturbance leg-lift response (DLR). When exposed to a presumably threatening stimulus, bumble bees often react by lifting one or multiple legs. We investigated DLR across two experiments. Methods. In our first experiment, we investigated the function of DLR as a prerequisite to later conditioning research. We recorded the occurrence and sequence of DLR, biting and stinging in response to an approaching object that was either presented inside a small, clear apparatus containing a bee, or presented directly outside of the subject's apparatus. In our second experiment, we investigated if DLR could be altered by learning and experience in a similar manner to many other well-known bee behaviors. We specifically investigated habituation learning by repeatedly presenting a mild visual stimulus to samples of captive and wild bees. Results. The results of our first experiment show that DLR and other defensive behaviors occur as a looming object approaches, and that the response is greater when proximity to the object is lower. More importantly, we found that DLR usually occurs first, rarely precedes biting, and often precedes stinging. -
The Syrphid Fly, Mesogramma Marginata, and the Flowers of Apocynum.* *
THE SYRPHID FLY, MESOGRAMMA MARGINATA, AND THE FLOWERS OF APOCYNUM.* * RAYMOND C. OSBURN. The flowers of the various species of the dogbane, Apocynum spp., have long been known to catch some of the weaker sorts of insects attracted by them, but as far as I am aware, no such wholesale slaughter of a particular species as that herein •described has been noted. In fact, if I may judge by the con- versations which I have held with both botanists and entomol- ogists, the capacity of the dogbane for trapping insects has pretty generally escaped notice. My own attention was drawn to the subject last summer "when Miss Edith Weston, a young student of botany at the Ohio State University Lake Laboratory at Put-in-Bay, brought in some flowers of Apocynum androscemifolium and called my attention to the fact that the flowers had "bugs" in them. A glance at the flowers showed that there were insects in nearly all of them and that these were all of one species, the common little Syrphid fly, Mesogramma marginata (Say). Many of these were still alive, though evidently held in such a manner that they could not escape. As the flowers are open bells, my curiosity was aroused and I began a careful examination. Having in mind the related milkweed, Asclepias, whose flower clusters sometimes entangle the legs of insects by a sticky secretion, I was a little surprised to find that all of the flies in the Apocynum flowers were held by the proboscis. As many as four were present in some of the flowers, the little bell being as full as it would hold. -

1 Adult behaviour in two species of cerioidine flies, Primocerioides petri (Hervé-Bazin) and Ceriana japonica (Shiraki) (Diptera Syrphidae) Toshihide ICHIKAWA & Kenji ŌHARA [Abstract, captions of figs all in English] Introduction Most adult Diptera belonging to the Syrphidae are known to be diurnal pollinators which fly to the flowers of various seed plants and feed on nectar and pollen (1, 2, 3) Many different species have black-and-yellow or black-and-orange stripes and are thought to be simulating female adult Apoidea, which are the most important pollinators and have poisonous stings and similar body stripes (4, 5, 6). A tribe of the Syrphidae, Cerioidini, which we study in this paper, has body stripes similar to none of the Apoidea, but instead simulate Eumenidae or Polistinae, both belonging to the Vespoidea, which are generally called hunter wasps. The Cerioidini includes five genera (Ceriana Rafinesque 1815, Monoceromyia Shannon 1925, Polybiomyia Shannon 1925, Sphiximorpha Rondani 1850 and Primocerioides Shannon 1927) and 197 recorded species worldwide, but for only 19 of which are the life-style and development times known (7). In Japan three species of the Cerioidini are known: recent records of the capture of adult insects show that they occur in Honshū, Shikoku and Kyūshū. Observations of adult Monoceromyia pleuralis (Coquillett) are relatively frequent so it became clear that they visit Quercus acutissima and Ulmus, which exude tree-sap from May to September (8, 9, 10, 11). The lifestyle and life history of the other two species, Primocerioides petri (Hervè-Bazin) and Ceriana japonica (Shiraki), are not known, and so accidental encounters remain the only possibility. -

There are around 283 species of hoverfly found in the British Isles, and 176 of these have been recorded in Birmingham and the Black Country. They truly can be considered the gardener’s fiend as not only are they important pollinators but the larva of many species also help to control aphids! Great places to spot hoverflies are in flowery meadows on flowers such as knapweed, buttercup, hogweed or yarrow or in gardens on plants such as Canadian goldenrod, hebe or buddleia. Quite a few species are instantly recognisable while the appearance of some other species might make you doubt that it is even a hoverfly… Mimicry Many hoverfly species are excellent mimics of bees and wasps, imitating not only their colouring, but also often their shape and behaviour. Sometimes they do this to fool the bees and wasps so they can enter their nests to lay their eggs. Most species however are probably trying to fool potential predators into thinking that they are a hazardous species with a sting or foul taste, even though they are in fact harmless and perfectly edible.
