DIPTERA Family SYRPHIDAE By R. L. CoE CHARACTERISTICS. FLIEs of the family SYRPIDDAE are commonly known as " Hover-flies " and "Flower-flies," the former popular name having reference to their frequent mode of flight and the latter to their fondness for flowers. The males are habitual hoverers, often appearing almost motionless in the air, although capable of exceedingly swift movement when disturbed. In body coloration FIG. SYRPIDDAE are often entirely black or dark (e.g., Cheilosia and Pipizella), but in many genera the thorax bears yellow or orange stripes or other markings, and· the tergites are ornamented with more or less conspicuous white, yellow or orange lunules, spots or bands. Scientifically, SYRPIDDAE may be distinguished from other Cyclorrha­ phous families of Diptera by the following combination of characters: wings (fig. 1) with cell R 5 (first posterior) closed by the bending forward of the upper marginal cross-vein, which runs almost parallel to the wing margin; discal cell closed at apex by the lower marginal cross-vein, which also runs more or less parallel to the wing margin; a spurious (free) vein present, passing through the first basal cell and cell R 5, being really a vein­ like thickening of the wing membrane. In Britain there are 234 known species of SYRPIDDAE, and 13 named varieties of these. The smallest British species are Paragus tibialis Fallen (range of wing-length 3-4·5 mm.), Necascia podagrica Fabricius (range of wing-length 3-5 mm.) and N. dispar Meigen (range of wing-length 3-5·25 mm.), while the largest is the fine black a.ndyellowfty, VoZuceUa zonaria Poda (range of wing-length 15·5-19·5 mm.). 1 2 X (1). DIPTERA : SYRPHIDAE LIFE-HISTORY. The eggs of SYRPHIDAE are chalky-white in colour, and the chorion (shell) bears a typically reticulate pattern. In the species with carnivorous larvae the eggs are usually glued singly on plants or trees amongst or near the prey, while those whose larvae have other feeding habits usually deposit the eggs in masses on or near the larval habitat. A female of Rhingia campestris Meigen was observed to deposit within five minutes an aggregate of 108 eggs on clover-leaves overhanging ox-dung (Coe, 1942) ; the eggs (fig. 2a) were deposited side by side in close batches. The feeding-habits of the larvae of SYRPHIDAE are varied, some being carnivorous, others phytophagous, and others acting as scavengers in various media. As the early stages of fourteen of the fifty British Syrphid genera are practically unknown, there is obviously much scope for careful and energetic field study. In the carnivorous class the known larvae of various genera (e.g., Syrphus and Sphaerophoria) devour Aphids and other Homoptera, while the larvae of Xanthandrus corntus Harris suck the juices of the larvae of a Eucosmid moth (Lucchese, 1942). Prominent among the phytophagous kind are the larvae of Gheilosia, which feed in the stems and roots of various plants, also in fungi. The habitats of the scavenging larvae are very varied, some living in damp or wet rot-holes of trees (e.g., Xylota, Mallota and Pocota}, others in dung (e.g., Rhingia), others in foul water or liquid manure (e.g., Eristalis and Helophilus}, while the larvae of Volucella live in the nests of Bombus and V espula and those of M icrodon in the nests of ants. The aquatic larva of Ghrysogaster hirtella Loew pierces the roots of the grass Glyceria aquatica Smith by means of the spine-like hind spiracles and so obtains a supply of oxygen from the intercellular spaces of the plant (Varley, 1935 and 1937). Another interesting larva (fig. 2e) is that of Gallicera rufa Schummel, which leads a subaqueous existence in rot-holes in the Scots Pine (Coe, 1938). The remarkably well-developed trachea enable the "short-tailed" larva to live in this manner. The larva (fig. 2b, c) of Rhingia campestris Meigen lives in ox-dung, and the formidable segmental spines of the third-stage larva become so closely coated with fragments of the dung that the only visible part is the tip of the posterior respiratory process (Coe, 1942). In SYRPHIDAE the puparium is formed, as in other Cyclorrhapha, from the hardened, inflated larval integument, which encloses the true pupa. The shape is variable, being pear-shaped and stream-lined in the aphido­ phagous species, and more barrel-shaped in other forms, e.g., Rhingia (fig. 2d) and Xylota (fig. 2f ). The fully formed adult emerges by pushing off the lid-like operculum at the anterior end of the puparium. HABITS. Adult SYRPHIDAE frequent various flowers, from which they suck the nectar and transfer or consume the pollen. In early spring the newly opened catkins of Sallow attract many SYRPHIDAE, and the male (pollen-bearing) flowers appear to be more attractive than the female kind. Alderson (1909 and 1910) published some interesting observations on Syrphid visitors to Sallow. (All after Terzi, except f.) 4 X (1). DIPTERA : SYRPHIDAE There is no doubt that some species of SYRPIDDAE over-winter in the adult stage. A living male and female of the common Drone-fly, Eristalis tenax, were found on lst January beneath the dried outer scales of stored onions (Timms, 1946), while living specimens of the same species were found sheltering in a crevice of exposed chalk in November (Ellis, 1937). Morley (1941) reported the discovery of a cluster of Eristalis aeneus Scopoli under a steel helmet inside a Suffolk church in November. Go:ffe (1934) observed numbers of Syrphus balteatus Degeer flying in warm sunshine on 17th February, and from the dull condition of captured specimens these had evidently over-wintered as adults. CoLLECTING AND PREPARATION. While the general technique for collecting adult Diptera (see Oldroyd, 1949) applies to SYRPIDDAE, the following hints should prove useful to students of the family : For killing SYRPIDDAE, the present writer uses an ordinary cyanide bottle or tube, and pins the insects while in the field. Other killing agents that have been found satisfactory by collectors are sulphur dioxide gas or a little ethyl acetate on filter-paper, the former being useful for retaining the bright yellow colours of Ohrysotoxum, etc., and the latter having the advantage of keeping the specimens in a relaxed condition. In pinning SYRPIDDAE, stainless steel pins of sufficient thickness are recommended, but these must be of good quality. Poor quality pins are extremely dangerous, as they are likely to bend at the slightest pressure with probable damage to the specimen.

Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity.

Native pine woodlands are relict indigenous forests dominated by self-sown Scots Pinus sylvestris which occur throughout the central and north-eastern Grampians and in the northern and western Highlands of Scotland. They are an important western representative of the European boreal forests in which structure and succession was probably determined naturally by storms and natural fires caused by lightning. Native pinewoods occur on infertile, strongly leached, podsolic soils. They do not support a large diversity of plants and animals compared with some more fertile habitats. However, there is a characteristic plant and animal community which includes many rare and uncommon species. The main tree species is Scots pine although birches Betula spp., rowan Sorbus aucuparia, alder Alnus glutinosa, willows Salix spp., bird cherry Prunus padus are also found.

Introduction Every five years, the country nature conservation bodies (Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and NatureScot), working jointly through the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), review Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (WCA) 1981. The review will provide recommendations to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and to Ministers for the Environment in the Scottish Government and Welsh Government for changes to these schedules2. This is known as the Quinquennial Review (QQR). As part of the QQR, stakeholders are provided with the opportunity to propose changes to the species on the schedules. This Information Pack has been produced for the 7th QQR (QQR 7). It is important to note that this QQR differs from previous ones. The Information Pack explains the new selection criteria, provides a timetable, and explains the process to be used by stakeholders.     HOVERFLY NUMBER 34 NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2002 ISSN 1358-5029 Long-standing readers of this newsletter may wonder what has happened to the lists of references to recent hoverfly literature that used to appear regularly in these pages. Graham Rotheray compiled these when he was editor and for some time afterwards, and more recently they have been provided by Kenn Watt. For some time Kenn trawled for someone else to take over this task from him, but nobody volunteered. Kenn continued to produce the lists, but now no longer has access to the source that provided him with the references. I therefore now make a plea for someone else to agree to take over this role, ideally producing a list of recent literature for each edition of this newsletter (i.e. twice per year), or if that is not possible, for each alternate edition. Failing a reply to this plea, has anyone any suggestions for a reliable source of references to which I could get access in order to compile the list myself? Syrphidae (Diptera) commonly called hoverflies, includes more than 5000 species world-wide. The aim of this study was to address the systematic position of the disputed elements in the intrafamilial classification of Syrphidae, namely the monophyly of Eristalinae and the placement of Microdontini and Pipizini, as well as the position of particular genera (Nausigaster, Alipumilio, Spheginobaccha). Sequence data from nuclear 28S rRNA and mitochondrial COI genes in conjunction with larval and adult morphological characters of fifty-one syrphid taxa were analysed using optimization alignment to explore phylogenetic relationships among included taxa. A species of Platypezidae, Agathomyia unicolor, was used as outgroup, and also including one representative (Jassidophaga villosa) of the sister-group of Syrphidae, Pipunculidae. Sensitivity of the data was assessed under six different parameter values. A stability tree sum- marized the results. Microdontini, including Spheginobaccha, was placed basally, and Pipizini appeared as the sister-group to subfamily Syrphinae. The monophyly of subfamily Eristalinae was supported. The results support at least two independ- ent origins of entomophagy in syrphids, and frequent shifts between larval feeding habitats within the saprophagous eristalines.     Dipteron Band 2 (6) S.113-132 ISSN 1436-5596 Kiel,15.9.1999 New data for the tribes Milesiini and Xylotini (Diptera, Syrphidae) on the Balkan Peninsula [Neue Daten fur die Triben Milesiini und Xylotini (Diptera, Syrphidae) van der Balkanhalbinsel] Ante VUJIC (Novi Sad) & Vesna MILANKOV (Novi Sad) Abstract: Distributional data are presented for four species of the tribe Milesiini (genus Criorhina MEIGEN, 1822) and 13 species of four genera of the tribe Xylotini (Brachypalpoides HIPPA, 1978, Brachypalpus MACQUART, 1834, Chalcosyrphus CURRAN, 1925, Xylota MErGEN, 1822) occuring on the Balkan Peninsula. The species Criorhina ranunculi (PANZER, [1804]) is recorded on the Balkan Peninsula for the fIrst time. A speci• men of Chalcosyrphus valgus (GMELIN, 1790) from Dubasnica mountain (Serbia) presents the fust verifIed record of the species on the Balkan Peninsula. Previously published reports of Xylota coeruleiventris ZETTERSTEDT,1838 on the Peninsula actually belong to X. jakuto• rum BAGACHANOVA,1980. Brachypalpus laphriformis (FALLEN, 1816), B. valgus (PANZER, [1798]), Criorhina asilica (FALLEN, 1816), Xylota jakutorum and X. jlorum (FABRICIUS, 1805) have been collected for the fust time in Montenegro. The record of Brachypalpus val· gus from Verno mountain is the first for Greece. A key to genera and species of the tribe Xylotini on the Balkan Peninsula and illustrations of characteristic morphological features are presented.
