Margaret Fuller Ossoli (May 23, 1810-July 19, 1850) was a well known author, lecturer, and Transcendentalist in the Nineteenth Century. She is often called a "bluestocking", because of her feminist beliefs and unconventional life. She was born Sarah Margaret Fuller, the first of nine children of Timothy and Margaret Fuller of Cambridgeport, Massachusetts. Her father was determined to give her a masculine education according to the classical curriculum of the day. The exacting and regimental education began at a very young age and was to take a great toll on her health. But it also gave her abroad knowledge of literature and languages. Following the completion of her formal studies, Margaret gained entrance into the intellectual circles of Cambridge and Harvard. Here she formed lasting friendships with many New England intellectuals. In 1836, Margaret Fuller was hired to teach languages at Bronson Alcott's Temple School. She stayed only a year, but continued her teaching career in Providence Rhode Island at the Greene Street School. In 1839, she returned to Massachusetts and began conducting "Conversations" for society women and others in Boston. At this time, Margaret Fuller also became an integral part of the Transcendentalist Movement. From 1840 to 1842 she edited and contributed to the Transcendentalist journal, The Dial. In 1845, she published her feminist work, Woman in the Nineteenth Century. -

CAMBRIDGE SUFFRAGE HISTORY CAMBRIDGE SUFFRAGE HISTORY A long march for suffrage. Margaret Fuller was born in Cambridge in1810. By her late teens, she was considered a prodigy and equal or superior in intelligence to her male friends. As an adult she hosted “Conversations” for men and women on topics that ranged from women’s rights to philosophy. She joined Ralph Waldo Emerson in editing and writing for the Transcendentalist journal, The Dial from 1840-1842. It was in this publication that she wrote an article about women’s rights titled, “The Great Lawsuit,” which she would go on to expand into a book a few years later. In 1844, she moved to NYC to write for the New York Tribune. Her book, Woman in the Nineteenth Century was published in1845. She traveled to Europe as the Tribune’s foreign correspondent, the first woman to hold such a role. She died in a shipwreck off the coast of NY in July 1850 just as she was returning to life in the U.S. Her husband and infant also perished. It was hoped that she would be a leader in the equal rights and suffrage movements but her life was tragically cut short. 02 SARAH BURKS, CAMBRIDGE HISTORICAL COMMISSION December 2019 CAMBRIDGE SUFFRAGE HISTORY A long march for suffrage. Harriet A. Jacobs (1813-1897) was born into slavery in Edenton, NC. She escaped her sexually abusive owner in 1835 and lived in hiding for seven years. In 1842 she escaped to the north. She eventually was able to secure freedom for her children and herself. -

DOCUMENTING DEMOCRACY 1964-2004 National Historical Publications & Records Commission George Washington at the outposts of Valley Forge. The University of Virginia is publishing a comprehensive edition of the papers written by or to the Revolutionary War general and first President of the United States. 2 Forty years ago in November 1964, the National Historical Publications Records Commission awarded its first grants for projects to further public understanding of American history, democracy, and culture. That remarkable day was the culmination of over 140 years of debate over the proper role of the national government in preserving and making public our documentary heritage. The Commission was founded in 1934 as part of the National Archives, but for most of those early years, because of the Depression and World War II, it rarely met. In 1950 President Harry S. Truman received a copy of the first volume of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson, and was so impressed that he urged the Commission to discuss in earnest the needs of the field, particularly in regard to historical publications. In the early 1960s, Congress and the Kennedy administration took the next evolutionary step in appropriating actual funds for the purposes of awarding grants. By 1974, the Commission began funding state and local archival projects, and to date, it has awarded over 4,000 grants and $163 million for projects across the country. The idea behind Federal funding is to make the Commission a true bridge between the archives and records held by the Federal Government at the National Archives and the records and collections of the states, municipalities, and nongovernmental organizations across the nation, and indeed, around the world. -

Volume 4 Issue 2 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND September 2017 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 Emphasizing the Suppression of Feminist Voices Ashok Bhusal Department of English, Rhetoric and Composition The University of Texas at El Paso, USA Abstract This article highlights the suppression tactics used to marginalize four women rhetoricians from the prior four centuries and attempts to find commonalities among these rhetors. They are getting recognition for their long overlooked rhetorical skills. We, as students of rhetoric, need to continue to look for other women rhetors who have been largely marginalized or ignored and reclaim their contributions in the twenty-first century. Keywords: rhetors, suppression, women. http://www.ijhcs.com/index.php/ijhcs/index Page 53 Volume 4 Issue 2 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND September 2017 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 Purpose This work examines the suppression tactics used to marginalize or ignore four women rhetoricians from the prior four centuries, including seventeenth-century English writer Mary Astell, eighteenth-century English author Mary Wollstonecraft, the nineteenth-century American writer Margaret Fuller, and the later nineteenth and early twentieth-century African American writer Ida Bell Wells. Additionally, the four writers’ use of rhetorical devices to inform, persuade, dialogue with, and move audiences to act are analyzed, as well as circumstances or rhetorical situations that prompted these rhetors to take pen in hand or take the podium. This article also attempts to find commonalities among these rhetors. Discussion The first writer under consideration is Mary Astell, whose first work, A Serious Proposal to the Ladies for the Advancement for their True and Greatest Interest, was a proposal for a Protestant nunnery for women. -

A Cry for Human Rights: Elizabeth Cady Stanton's "Solitude of Self"
Introduction What is significant about the year 1892 in American history? Grover Cleveland is in the White House, Ellis Island becomes the reception area for new immigrants, and a seventy-six year old woman from Johnstown New York presents a speech that will move generations to come. Elizabeth Cady Stanton devoted her life to improving that of others and changing women’s role in society. Her idleness as a stay at home mother and lack of intellectual stimulus urged her to voice her frustration by congregating with like-minded women. These woman, Lucretia Mott, Martha Coffin Wright, Susan B. Anthony and many more, helped to pioneer a movement that would become the historic Woman’s Suffrage Movement (Anthony 17). These women made it their job to speak out against the patriarchal society they lived in and fight for equality. During their life women were forced to give their earned money to their husbands or fathers, had a limited choice of jobs, had unequal pay, were not allowed to own property, were not allowed to go to college, could not speak out in public meetings and were not allowed to vote in any election (Anthony 15). They were forced to be dependent on their male counterparts. The feminist of this time period became invested in changing the status quo and changing the lives of their daughters and granddaughters. Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Solitude of Self” speech used humanistic appeals to persuade her male audience of the innate right for individual autonomy. This masterpiece of an address was presented on three historic occasions (Campbell 304). -

How Women Won the Vote Additional Print & Online Woman Suffrage Resources In recognition of Equality Day, and following up on the “How Women Won the Vote” Gazette, the NWHP has posted on its website an extensive new List of Resources on suffragists and the suffrage movement. The Suffrage List offers “Cookbooks, Patterns, Songs and Surprises – Leads to a Variety of Votes for Women Resources,” with items in three dozen categories. The Reference Lists cite sixty-six biographies of suffragists, many of which are recent, and more than 500 books and links that offer more information. There is material on each state’s suffrage history that adds to the information in the Gazette. [link] The National Women’s History Project’s 2017 Gazette, How Women Won the Vote, celebrates suffragists and activity in all the states and covers plans for the 2020 suffrage centennial. However, with limited space, it did not list any books or other media. So here are selected books, resources and additional links to encourage further research into individual suffragists and the multifaceted suffrage movement. The supplemental resources specifically for Suffragists Active in Every State appear at the end. Also check out resources on the web. There is a wealth of information, books and lesson plans on suffrage and women’s history now available online.
