Margaret Fuller Ossoli (May 23, 1810-July 19, 1850) was a well known author, lecturer, and Transcendentalist in the Nineteenth Century. She is often called a "bluestocking", because of her feminist beliefs and unconventional life. She was born Sarah Margaret Fuller, the first of nine children of Timothy and Margaret Fuller of Cambridgeport, Massachusetts. Her father was determined to give her a masculine education according to the classical curriculum of the day. The exacting and regimental education began at a very young age and was to take a great toll on her health. But it also gave her abroad knowledge of literature and languages. Following the completion of her formal studies, Margaret gained entrance into the intellectual circles of Cambridge and Harvard. Here she formed lasting friendships with many New England intellectuals. In 1836, Margaret Fuller was hired to teach languages at Bronson Alcott's Temple School. She stayed only a year, but continued her teaching career in Providence Rhode Island at the Greene Street School. In 1839, she returned to Massachusetts and began conducting "Conversations" for society women and others in Boston. At this time, Margaret Fuller also became an integral part of the Transcendentalist Movement. From 1840 to 1842 she edited and contributed to the Transcendentalist journal, The Dial. In 1845, she published her feminist work, Woman in the Nineteenth Century.

By her late teens, she was considered a prodigy and equal or superior in intelligence to her male friends. As an adult she hosted “Conversations” for men and women on topics that ranged from women’s rights to philosophy. She joined Ralph Waldo Emerson in editing and writing for the Transcendentalist journal, The Dial from 1840-1842. It was in this publication that she wrote an article about women’s rights titled, “The Great Lawsuit,” which she would go on to expand into a book a few years later. In 1844, she moved to NYC to write for the New York Tribune. Her book, Woman in the Nineteenth Century was published in1845. She traveled to Europe as the Tribune’s foreign correspondent, the first woman to hold such a role. She died in a shipwreck off the coast of NY in July 1850 just as she was returning to life in the U.S. Her husband and infant also perished. Additionally, the four writers’ use of rhetorical devices to inform, persuade, dialogue with, and move audiences to act are analyzed, as well as circumstances or rhetorical situations that prompted these rhetors to take pen in hand or take the podium. This article also attempts to find commonalities among these rhetors. Elizabeth Cady Stanton devoted her life to improving that of others and changing women’s role in society. Her idleness as a stay at home mother and lack of intellectual stimulus urged her to voice her frustration by congregating with like-minded women. These woman, Lucretia Mott, Martha Coffin Wright, Susan B. Anthony and many more, helped to pioneer a movement that would become the historic Woman’s Suffrage Movement (Anthony 17). These women made it their job to speak out against the patriarchal society they lived in and fight for equality. During their life women were forced to give their earned money to their husbands or fathers, had a limited choice of jobs, had unequal pay, were not allowed to own property, were not allowed to go to college, could not speak out in public meetings and were not allowed to vote in any election (Anthony 15). The first story, whether it be told about Margaret Fuller, Emily Dickinson or Celia Thaxter, is a rather conventional melodrama about a talented woman who stole time from her domestic duties to write an amazing quantity of literature, some of it a recognizable variation on the "standard" literature written by Emer­ son, Longfellow and Whittier. The superficial "first story" has been chronicled in American literary history by generations of critics and his­ torians who concluded that women in nineteenth-century America­ with the exception of Emily Dickinson, perhaps-wrote an enormous pile of second-rate literature, the imputed inferiority of which was based in the erroneous but widespread belief that female experience was in itself an inferior fornl of human experience. Typical of the muddled judgment women's writing has received is this statement made by Robert Spiller in The Cycle ofAmerican Literature, 1955: "There is something about the way women lived in the nineteenth century that encouraged repression."· Spiller, like most of the literary historians of his and earlier generations, was content to leave that "something" a vague and unsolvable mystery; "something" was not worth investigating.

It seeks to situate the “marriage question” within both the rhetoric of American antebellum reform and of liberal religious thought. Rather than concluding that these early texts facilitated a movement toward a contractarian ideal of marriage this article concludes that Child, Grimke, and Fuller, sought to discredit unification as an organizing idea for marriage and replace it with a definition that placed a spiritual commitment to equality between the partners as the animating core of the idea of marriage. Serving both religious and civil functions, the marriage tie was at the very center of adult life for the vast majority of Americans. But marriage was also profoundly anti-egalitarian, demanding sacrifices for women that contradicted basic assumptions about individual rights that by the mid-nineteenth century had transformed political, economic, and religious life.
