Based on a wealth of designers' drawings, film stills and archival documents, the book FILM FILM offers a new insight into the development and signifi- cance of transnational artistic collaboration during this CULTURE CULTURE period. IN TRANSITION IN TRANSITION European cinema from the late 1920s to the late 1930s was famous for its attention to detail in terms of set design and visual effect. Focusing on developments in Britain, France, and Germany, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the practices, styles, and function of cine- matic production design during this period, and its influence on subsequent filmmaking patterns. Tim Bergfelder is Professor of Film at the University of Southampton. He is the author of International Adventures (2005), and co- editor of The German Cinema Book (2002) and The Titanic in Myth and Memory (2004). Sarah Street is Professor of Film at the Uni- versity of Bristol. She is the author of British Cinema in Documents (2000), Transatlantic Crossings: British Feature Films in the USA (2002) and Black Narcis- sus (2004). ALIX PEARLSTEIN MONØGRAM 6.6 – 7.26 MONØGRAM The Camera is positioned on a tripod at the farthest point from the rear of the absolute center of the cyclorama. The piece is Structured as series of passes. Each pass is a single take. Each pass is consistent in speed / duration. Each pass begins with the camera zoomed in to the rear wall of the cyc. The camera then zooms out for 20 seconds, to the point that reveals the maximum possible widest framing of the cyc. When it reaches that point, the camera holds still for 15 seconds. The camera then zooms back in for 20 seconds, to the rear wall of the cyc. The passes follow a relay pattern through three Cycles of solos, pairs and trios. Each cycle reconfigures the possible combinations / permutations of 3 actors through positions that maintain, carry over or switch. Each cycle is made distinct through shifts or adjustments to action and wardrobe. POV, Framing, Marks, Camera Movement, Speed / Durations, Exposure and Lighting remain constant. All Action aggregates along the central axis of the cyc. Orientation is frontal towards the camera. As the camera zooms out, the actor(s) enter from the side(s) of the cyc. As the camera zooms in, the actor(s) exit to the side(s) of the cyc. The entrance and exit movements include a pause or two while feeling out the space, the distance between actors and the distance relative to the zoom, while moving towards and away from the marks - these movements will vary from pass to pass. -

Ellie has a good life: a stable teaching job, successful friends, and a loyal, aging dog named Bing. As her decades-old dream of a respectable place in the art world becomes more elusive, her frustration with her lack of recognition feels alarmingly urgent. When she is offered the summer house and studio of a famous friend in Upstate New York she seizes the opportunity to hit the reset button on her life and work. She unwittingly finds inspiration in two out-of-work actors who maintain the gardens at her summer retreat: Frank (Robert Clohessy), a recent widower trying to reassemble his life by turning his back on a mediocre acting career, and Tom (Josh Safdie), a young, hungry actor whose wife (Parker Posey) has a less ambitious vision for their idyllic country life. Joining them is John (John Rothman), a thrice-divorced, disillusioned lawyer looking for a summer distraction. This unlikely trio helps Ellie reinvent her artistic identity by participating in her DIY art videos— improbable recreations of old Hollywood films. -
