Art, Real Places, Better Than Real Places 1 Mark Pimlott
Art, real places, better than real places 1 Mark Pimlott 02 05 2013 Bluecoat Liverpool I/ Many years ago, toward the end of the 1980s, the architect Tony Fretton and I went on lots of walks, looking at ordinary buildings and interiors in London. When I say ordinary, they had appearances that could be described as fusing expediency, minimal composition and unconscious newness. The ‘unconscious’ modern architecture of the 1960s in the city were particularly interesting, as were places that were similarly, ‘unconsciously’ beautiful. We were the ones that were conscious of their raw, expressive beauty, and the basis of this beauty lay in the work of minimal and conceptual artists of that precious period between 1965 and 1975, particularly American artists, such as Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Dan Flavin and Dan Graham. It was Tony who introduced (or re-introduced) me to these artists: I had a strong memory of Minimal Art from visits to the National Gallery in Ottawa, and works of Donald Judd, Claes Oldenburg and Richard Artschwager as a child. There was an aspect of directness, physicality, artistry and individualized or collective consciousness about this work that made it very exciting to us. This is the kind of architecture we wanted to make; and in my case, this is how I wanted to see, make pictures and make environments. To these ends, we made trips to see a lot of art, and art spaces, and the contemporary art spaces in Germany and Switzerland in particular held a special significance for us. I have to say that very few architects in Britain were doing this at the time, or looking at things the way we looked at them. -

Rana Begum Curates the Arts Council Collection Media Release
Occasional Geometries: Rana Begum Curates the Arts Council Collection Media Release An Arts Council Collection National Partner exhibition 15 July–29 October 2017 Longside Gallery Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) presents Occasional Geometries, an exhibition selected largely from the Arts Council Collection by Bangladeshi-born artist and guest curator Rana Begum. Begum has established an internationally respected practice creating immaculately conceived and constructed abstract installations that challenge the distinction between two and three-dimensional practice, sculpture and painting. A scroll through Begum’s Instagram feed immediately reveals a particular personal interest and delight in the occasional geometries of life. This might be the definition of an air vent, the architecture of a stairwell articulated through light and shadow, or the abstract pattern of a handrail. Begum says, of a childhood memory: ‘One particular day as a child in Bangladesh reading the Quran at the local mosque, in a tiny room dappled with morning Jesse Darling, March of light. The light and the repetition of recitation, all familiar elements, suddenly came the Valedictorians, 2016. Courtesy the artist together in a strong feeling of calm and exhilaration. It is one of my strongest memories and Arcadia Missa. and the experience of calm and exhilaration is what I try to capture in my work’. Photo Tim Bowditch Begum has selected works from the Arts Council Collection by artists who share a similar viewpoint and those from different generations. Throughout Longside Gallery, Begum’s selection creates an architectural, spatial and playful experience – one that is animated through movement and changing light. Her approach has been to bring together abstract works that, as she describes, ‘have a soul’. -
Alix Pearlstein Monøgram 6.6 – 7.26
ALIX PEARLSTEIN MONØGRAM 6.6 – 7.26 MONØGRAM The Camera is positioned on a tripod at the farthest point from the rear of the absolute center of the cyclorama. The piece is Structured as series of passes. Each pass is a single take. Each pass is consistent in speed / duration. Each pass begins with the camera zoomed in to the rear wall of the cyc. The camera then zooms out for 20 seconds, to the point that reveals the maximum possible widest framing of the cyc. When it reaches that point, the camera holds still for 15 seconds. The camera then zooms back in for 20 seconds, to the rear wall of the cyc. The passes follow a relay pattern through three Cycles of solos, pairs and trios. Each cycle reconfigures the possible combinations / permutations of 3 actors through positions that maintain, carry over or switch. Each cycle is made distinct through shifts or adjustments to action and wardrobe. POV, Framing, Marks, Camera Movement, Speed / Durations, Exposure and Lighting remain constant. All Action aggregates along the central axis of the cyc. Orientation is frontal towards the camera. As the camera zooms out, the actor(s) enter from the side(s) of the cyc. As the camera zooms in, the actor(s) exit to the side(s) of the cyc. The entrance and exit movements include a pause or two while feeling out the space, the distance between actors and the distance relative to the zoom, while moving towards and away from the marks - these movements will vary from pass to pass. -
