Download date: 07 Oct. 2021 Since 1989, Spain has gone through a process of re-emergence of the memories of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and Francoism (1939-1975). These newly produced memories challenge the official reading of the civil war, as established during the transition to democracy, as a “collective insanity.” As part of this process, the last three decades have produced numerous novels, documentaries, and journalistic accounts that have brought to the fore the untold stories of the repression during the civil war and its aftermath. This dissertation offers an analysis of the influence of transnational frameworks on the reconfiguration of the cultural memory narratives of the Spanish Civil War. The selection of post-Cold War Spanish cultural texts – narrative fiction, documentary film, photography and journalism – being analyzed in this dissertation, is framed by three emblematic “spaces of transnational memory.” These are: the wars in former Yugoslavia; Forced Disappearance in the Southern Cone; and the remembrance of the Holocaust. Each of these spaces highlights a different contemporary site of agency in the production of memory, namely contemporary civil war, mass grave exhumations, and testimony. In addition, this dissertation posits affect and emotion as important mechanisms in the production of transnational memories. This research argues that these transnational contexts of remembrance serve to reimagine Spain, proposing alternative and more “inclusive” forms of national memory and identity, often in opposition to the current Spanish “constitutional patriotism.” Transnational memory is located within the margins of the nation-state, a space of entanglement between the national and the transnational, and inhabited by those who were excluded from Spanish national identity through the forging of the Spanish nation-state. In 2008 the much-acclaimed Spanish visual artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo exhibited his installation Spitting Leaders in the “Sonsbeek” Park in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The work consists of the busts of four historical figures rising from the park’s pond. The busts of Stalin, Franco, Louis XIV and a fourth ambiguous bust – in different sources identified as Hitler, Pinochet, Philips V and José de Sucre – spit water at each other from their mouths. The work is part of Sánchez Castillo’s continuous inquiry into icons of memory and the vestiges of the Francoist dictatorship (1939-1975) in Spain.

    RED AND BLUE TRIANGLES IN A GRAY PLACE: SPAIN AND THE HOLOCAUST IN STORIES, LETTERS, AND PHOTOGRAPHS Paula M. Bruno Bucknell University Consideration of the Holocaust and its meaning in Spain materialize and continue to emerge, silhouetted within haunting spaces encircled by memory, absence, presence, and oblivion. The doubled and layered construction and reconstruction of the shadow of Raquel, or what this figure signifies, points back to the farthest reaches of history and legend. Eventually, looping forward, this narrative develops in the direction of a future that is now the past; arriving, in other words, at the twentieth century’s Second World War and the Shoah. The effects of fascist persecution and the exile of Republican and Jewish refugees after the Spanish Civil War, in Spain and in the German extermination camps, winds through the Spanish encounter with the Jewish Other as Self. The connecting past and present is a liminal area that is central to the development of Spain and Spanish identity in and outside of the Peninsula. Raquel, in the shadows of the past, maintains a subtle link with the gray area that is illuminated in the present by the Italian Sephardi, Primo Levi. In this article, in response, I analyze portrayals of Sephardim and of shadows, and locate them in Spain, in the stories of refugees, and in testimonial and memory documents of the stateless Republicans in Mauthausen. I effect this analysis via a focus on oral history, photographs, letters, and selected chapters from Primo Levi’s memoirs alongside Antonio Muñoz Molina’s Sefarad: Una novela de novelas.

    Spanish Civil War Caves of Asturias in Archaeology and Memory J. Fernández Fernández and G. Moshenska Abstract As the Spanish Civil War drew to a close, retreating Republican troops in the northern region of Asturias took refuge in caves in the mountains from the brutal victor’s justice of the Francoist forces. In this paper we examine three of these caves in the context of the Civil War experiences of the rural municipality of Santo Adriano, based on a combination of archaeological recording and oral history interviews. The paper focuses on the role of the La Ponte-Ecomuseum, a grassroots heritage organisation that has worked to preserve and communicate the tangible and intangible heritage of the district. The Civil War heritage presents cultural, political and practical challenges for the museum: nonetheless it has succeeded in establishing an ongoing programme for its communication and protection. Keywords Conflict heritage, Ecomuseums, Memory, Negative heritage, Oral history Introduction In this paper we examine the work of a community-based heritage organisation in collecting, archiving and promoting the marginalised heritage of the Spanish Civil War era. We draw on a dynamic theoretical framework for the generation and articulation of conflict memory narratives based in the work of Ashplant, Dawson and Roper (2000) and developed by Moshenska (2010) to examine the role of small commemorative organisations and the strategies they employ to promote subaltern historical narratives. Through this theoretical lens we examine a community-based research project that took place in the municipality of Santo Adriano, a small rural community in the centre of Asturias. The project employed oral history and archaeological survey to examine three caves in the region that were used as refuges or operating bases by Republican militiamen at various points during and after the Spanish Civil War, and where traces of occupation remain in the form of graffiti carved into the limestone cave walls.

HOMENAJE PARA LORENZO AMENGUAL El pasado sábado en las nuevas dependencias de la Y TONI SERRA AMIC TIRADOR Cruz Roja local, fue rendido un pequeño homenaje a los dos montañeros pertenecientes a la Cruz Roja, Lorenzo Amengual y Ton i Serra. El pequeño homenaje fue rendido por el presidente, Juan Vallcaneras, y miembros de la junta, y por un nutrido grupo de compañeros y miembros de la misma entidad. En el transcurso del mismo, los dos jóvenes fueron contando las peripecias por las que tuvieron que pasar durante la escalada, siendo en muchos momentos interrumpidos por preguntas hechas por sus compañeros. Al finalizar el acto los dos jóvenes hicieron entrega de un cuadro con la fotografía de la cumbre y la bandera mostrada por uno de ellos, como símbolo de su estancia en el MONT BLANC. El obsequio fue agradecido por el presidente Foto presentada pel nostre col.laborador Joan Oliver, baix del lema en nombre de todos los miembros de la asamblea.
