Ferreira and Bysshe vs 5fm and V Lopez vs Jacaranda 94.2 FM, Case No: 70/2005 ________________________________________________________________________ 2 SUMMARY The Registrar received complaints from adherents of the Scientology faith that broadcasts on Jacaranda FM and SABC’s 5fm offended them. The comments by presenters of programmes, in both instances made reference to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ plan to have a “silent birth” in accordance with their faith, Scientology. Since the complaints deal with the same subject, I will deal with both matters in one judgment. The Tribunal held that in the particular programmes which have been complained about, it did not believe that the Scientology belief in still birth would have been criticized, had it not been for the world famous actors involved. Of course, the references go further than mere criticism but amount to joking with what Scientology believers regard as part of their faith and the practices and respect for Ron Hubbard that go with it. -

Miranda’s wearing a skin-tight tank-top and stretch-pants, doing yoga next to her Humana monkey-god shrine and talking on her cell. Inhaling deeply, her nipples point at me mockingly; exhaling frenetically, she excoriates Obama for breaking her heart, hastening Financial Armageddon and bringing the coming Race Wars. “It's gonna be real bad!” she crescendos manically. She’s a fit, mid-thirties ophthalmologist, who believes in extra- dimensional aliens, Tarot cards and hope. We met this weekend at a Wiccan retreat in Arroyo Seco. “My friend goes down to Peru every year,” she’d whispered, “and she told me, ‘You know who has the best ayahuasca? This math teacher out of Albuquerque!'” I now feel ill just typing that word—Albuquerque. She startles at the sight of me leering at her across the room. -

Now that the battle is over, I must take some time to thank my comrades-in-arms, without whom none of what you hold would have been possible. To the various people with whom I had personal correspondence or conversation during the course of this research, thank you for your time and expertise. These fine souls include, but are not limited to, Bill Nichols, Bruce Isaacs, Richard Smith, David Burchell, David Axe, Brendan Keogh, Elizabeth Roberts, and Hunter Cordaiy. Thanks to Jonathan Foye, and JT Velikovsky, for casting an objective eye over the piece in its final stages – and for your validation. To the employers who have graciously worked around my research commitments, continuing to further my experience in the film industry and academia, thank you. To my supervisors – Dr. Paul Ryder and Dr. Peter Dallow – your patience, commitment, wisdom, and good humour have been invaluable. It is needless to say that this document would not exist without you both. -

Meet a Scientologist—The Silent Birth of Navarra Collins
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 14, 2011 CONTACT: Karin Pouw (323) 960-3500 [email protected] Meet a Scientologist—the Silent Birth of Navarra Collins Little Navarra Collins of Dublin, Ireland, steals the show in the Collins family video—one of 200 “Meet a Scientologist” videos available on the Scientology website at www.Scientology.org. In the Collins family video on Scientology.org, the sunny disposition of daughter Navarra is a striking element throughout. Her mother, Zabrina, took great care during pregnancy and childbirth to avoid anything that would lead to harmful consequences later in her daughter’s life. The introduction to Dianetics video on www.Scientology.org describes the effects painful incidents can have on a person: “All of your painful experiences are recorded in a previously unknown part of the mind. It’s called the reactive mind. And it throws those experiences back at you in an irrational attempt to get you to avoid the same painful thing from happening to you again.” The video shows how injuries that occur before or during the birth of a child can have serious ramifications. Childbirth is a painful experience for both mother and child and words in particular spoken during these moments can have an adverse effect later in life. “I wanted Navarra to be born in a calm environment. A child goes through enough trauma during labor without adding to it. I believed she deserved peace and quiet when she arrived,” says Zabrina. “Having the silent birth meant that it was very much just me and the baby going through something together in the calmest way possible.” Zabrina thinks the world of her daughter whom she says is a bright, loving, happy child who is virtually trouble-free. -
