  • 1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study in Reality
1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study In reality, women generally have had fewer legal rights and careers opportunities than men. It happens all along the time, from the past until today, in all aspect of life. It can be found in political, cultural, economical, sexual, racial, and ethical dimensions. Wifehood and motherhood were still regarded as women’s most significant professions. It is considerable evidence that, particularly in the family, women have been targeted for victimization. The phenomenon above have resulted women’s rights movement. Women’s rights movement in nineteenth and twentieth century actually include extending the natural right to vote, changing married women’s status by protecting married women’s property, improving women’s legal position in child custody cases, liberalizing divorce laws, providing married women with economic autonomy and ensuring women access to higher education wage labor, and the professions (Mandell, 1995: 7). The spirit of women’s right movement, actually, was pioneered by the birth of feminism in 1960s in American society. Since that day, the struggle for women’s rights in American society extended. This phenomenon has influenced the sociologists to study gender as sociological issues. The sociological imagination was first described by C. Wright Mills (1916-1962), an eminent sociologist and radical in his time. Mill’s radicalism is founded, in 1 2 part, on his passionate belief that the task of sociology is to understand the relations between individuals and the society in which they live (Andersen, 1983: 6). Feminist perspective in sociology were formulated only recently when women (and some men) in the profession of sociology began applying the tools of sociological analyzis to their understanding of the position of women in society.

Online Extra: UHH’s Estrella goes out with aloha http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/sections/sports/local-sports/online-extra-uhh’s-estrella-goes-out-aloha.html April 15, 2013 By BILL O’REAR Tribune-Herald sports editor When Joey Estrella began his baseball coaching career at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 1976, music from Kalapana, Cecilio & Kapono and Nohelani Cypriano soaked the airwaves, Kilauea volcano was producing regular fireworks, and the Vulcans basketball team was on the verge of becoming a small-college powerhouse. The young Estrella, hired by UHH athletic director Ramon Goya, was riding high. He had recently finished a standout baseball career at UH-Manoa under legendary coach Les Murakami, earned a degree, and got hired at UHH as a teacher and the first baseball coach in the infant program’s history. Life was definitely good for the 20something Estrella, sporting the trendy Beattles’ length hair of the ’70s and a robust enthusiasm that would become a trademark of his coaching style that would last 37 years. He got along fine with the older generation, picked up some valuable pointers from the soft-spoken Goya and Vulcans basketball coach Jimmy Yagi, and related well with his players — being close in age and understanding the times while Kalapana’s “Naturally” or “When The Morning Comes” often satisfied many of those living and going to school in paradise. Estrella, a 1969 St. Joseph High School graduate, loved being back home and contributing to UHH and the community in a way that energized him and made his parents extremely proud.

  • Dexter: Villain, Hero Or Simply a Man? the Perpetuation of Traditional Masculinity in Dexter
ATLANTIS. Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 32.2 (December 2010): 57–71 ISSN 0210-6124 Dexter: Villain, Hero or Simply a Man? The Perpetuation of Traditional Masculinity in Dexter Isabel Santaularia Universitat de Lleida [email protected] The paper analyses how television series Dexter generates complicity with its serial killer protagonist, Dexter Morgan, not only by giving him a heroic edge that overrides the monstrosity of his crimes, but also by focusing on his attempts to blend in and pass undetected by posing as a caring partner, father and co-worker. Dexter’s efforts to curve his inborn violence into submission and to appear as the New Man envisioned in our supposedly post-feminist state of affairs, however, do not prosper and the series ends up promoting an image of men as inherently aggressive, individualist and selfish. Dexter, I argue, does not manage to countermand a construction of masculinity based on violence and endorses a patriarchal ethos actively and stubbornly engaged in its self-preservation. Keywords: cultural studies; serial killer fiction; psycho-horror; masculinity; television; Dexter Dexter: ¿Villano, héroe o simplemente un hombre?

E. Evans-Pritchard Fellow of All Souls College and Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Oxford MARCEL MAUSS (i 872-1 950), Emile Durkheim's nephew and most distinguished pupil, was a man of unusual ability and learning, and also of integrity and strong convictions. After Durkheim's death he was the leading figure in French sociology. His reputation was closely bound up with the fortunes of the Annee Sociologique which he helped his uncle to found and make famous; some of the most stimu- lating and original contributions to its earher numbers were written by him in collaboration with Durkheim and Hubert and Beuchat: Essai sur la nature et la fauction du sacrifice (1899), De quelques formes primitives de classification : contribution a f etude des representations collectives (1903), Esquisse d'une theorie generale de la magie (1904), and Essai sur les variations saisonnieres des societes eskimos : essai de morphologic sociale (1906). The war of 19 14-18, during which Mauss was on opera- tional service, almost wiped out the team of brilliant younger scholars whom Durkheim had taught, inspired, and gathered around him^—his son Andre Durkheim, Robert Hertz, Antoine Bianconi, Georges Gelly, Maxime David, Jean Reynier.

The Gift ‘The teaching of Marcel Mauss was one to which few can be compared. No acknowledgment of him can be proportionate to our debt.’ Claude Lévi-Strauss ‘Marcel Mauss’s famous Essay on the Gift becomes his own gift to the ages. Apparently completely lucid, with no secrets even for the novice, it remains a source of an unending ponderation…’ Marshall Sahlins, Stone Age Economics ‘One could go so far as to say that a work as monumental as Marcel Mauss’s The Gift speaks of everything but the gift: It deals with economy, exchange, contract (do et des), it speaks of raising the stakes, sacrifice, gift and countergift—in short, everything that in the thing itself impels the gift and the annulment of the gift.’ Jacques Derrida, Given Time Marcel Mauss The Gift The form and reason for exchange in archaic societies With a foreword by Mary Douglas London and New York Essai sur le don first published 1950 by Presses Universitaires de France in Sociologie et Anthropologie English edition first published 1954 by Cohen & West This translation first published 1990 by Routledge First published in Routledge Classics 2002 by Routledge 11 New Fetter Lane, London EC4P 4EE Routledge is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group This edition published in the Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2002.
