Ebenezer Scrooge is the miserly merchant who despises Saturday, December 14, 2019 Christmas as a useless “humbug.” He resents the good cheer and generosity of heart that the holiday brings about. He calls it “a poor excuse 5:00pm Stanley Celmer & deceased for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of December.” Family members by Family On Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019 3rd Sunday of Advent Jacob Marley. Marley tells Scrooge that that he will be visited by three spirits. The first, the Spirit of Christmas Past, where he is visited by the people who 8:00am Mary Ann Tillman by have loved him most and treated him with kindness and respect. And he is Catholic Daughters reminded that his love has been replaced by a new idol: “gain.” 10:30am Mary Ayrault by Ron Ayrault The second visitor is the Spirit of Christmas Present, where he is reminded Monday, December 16, 2019 that his greed has blinded him to those who care for him. Online Extra: UHH’s Estrella goes out with aloha http://hawaiitribune-herald.com/sections/sports/local-sports/online-extra-uhh’s-estrella-goes-out-aloha.html April 15, 2013 By BILL O’REAR Tribune-Herald sports editor When Joey Estrella began his baseball coaching career at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in 1976, music from Kalapana, Cecilio & Kapono and Nohelani Cypriano soaked the airwaves, Kilauea volcano was producing regular fireworks, and the Vulcans basketball team was on the verge of becoming a small-college powerhouse. The young Estrella, hired by UHH athletic director Ramon Goya, was riding high. He had recently finished a standout baseball career at UH-Manoa under legendary coach Les Murakami, earned a degree, and got hired at UHH as a teacher and the first baseball coach in the infant program’s history. Life was definitely good for the 20something Estrella, sporting the trendy Beattles’ length hair of the ’70s and a robust enthusiasm that would become a trademark of his coaching style that would last 37 years. He got along fine with the older generation, picked up some valuable pointers from the soft-spoken Goya and Vulcans basketball coach Jimmy Yagi, and related well with his players — being close in age and understanding the times while Kalapana’s “Naturally” or “When The Morning Comes” often satisfied many of those living and going to school in paradise. Estrella, a 1969 St. Joseph High School graduate, loved being back home and contributing to UHH and the community in a way that energized him and made his parents extremely proud.

  • Dexter: Villain, Hero Or Simply a Man? the Perpetuation of Traditional Masculinity in Dexter
ATLANTIS. Journal of the Spanish Association of Anglo-American Studies. 32.2 (December 2010): 57–71 ISSN 0210-6124 Dexter: Villain, Hero or Simply a Man? The Perpetuation of Traditional Masculinity in Dexter Isabel Santaularia Universitat de Lleida [email protected] The paper analyses how television series Dexter generates complicity with its serial killer protagonist, Dexter Morgan, not only by giving him a heroic edge that overrides the monstrosity of his crimes, but also by focusing on his attempts to blend in and pass undetected by posing as a caring partner, father and co-worker. Dexter’s efforts to curve his inborn violence into submission and to appear as the New Man envisioned in our supposedly post-feminist state of affairs, however, do not prosper and the series ends up promoting an image of men as inherently aggressive, individualist and selfish. Dexter, I argue, does not manage to countermand a construction of masculinity based on violence and endorses a patriarchal ethos actively and stubbornly engaged in its self-preservation. Keywords: cultural studies; serial killer fiction; psycho-horror; masculinity; television; Dexter Dexter: ¿Villano, héroe o simplemente un hombre?

Liner Notes: Until That Morning Comes Harmony Holiday Fred and Lorenzo Moten announce: The smile of life is a Blackbird. After laughter comes tears. The kalimba framed between Phil Cohran's hands rolls notes like smiles, is shaped like a smile, narrows the cruel distance between speech and singing. Sam Cooke’s grin writhes and descends, prying open a clenched grunt, a hope that has been stunted by spoken language. The pulsing sound of the man working on the chain gang, gagged with rhythm, blunted frenzy hammering into dance and hammer grinning its iron mirror into the drift of road, arrow of a flock of blackbirds so happy and high in the burden flying in a crescent of love cry and smiling their leaving song. Bye, bye, blackbird, Miles’ trumpet smiles syllable by syllable, accessing the unrepentant joy in Black departure. The song, standard, becomes a countdown to starting anew as a fugitive in his interpretation, even our demons grin with its babbling happy interdimensional travel. And Sun Ra’s version of the adjacent standard, Smile haunts so good it heals. Smile when your heart is breaking, smile even though it’s aching, June Tyson sings, as if celebrating, broken news becoming good in her hinged dome of blue rhyme. The rhythm of forced joy joins that of forced labor and becomes mechanical, the machines smile at their leverage, women smile as revenge. James Baldwin smiles as if gasping with light, as if possessed by his own electric light, ravishing and severe. You can meet him here in the burdened grin, get near his disaster euphoria, his infinite gasp, edge into glory with him for a spell.

Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources. • The Psychopath's Double-Edged Sword: How Media Stigma Influences Aggravating and Mitigating Circumstances in Capital Sentencing
THE PSYCHOPATH'S DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD: HOW MEDIA STIGMA INFLUENCES AGGRAVATING AND MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES IN CAPITAL SENTENCING BANG THI* ABSTRACT Television dramas have historically portrayed psychopaths as the quintessential villain who is violent, lacks emotion, and is "evil." These portrayals perpetuate the stigma surrounding psychopaths and reinforce the belief that death is the appropriate punishment for such criminals, implicating sentencing concerns in the judicial system. The 21st century's "Golden Age" of television adds to the confusion as antihero protagonists have become popular in recent crime dramas. This Note seeks to examine how several recent television series serve to stigmatize psychopaths, which ultimately confuses potential jurors and contributes to improperly weighing mitigating evidence as aggravating instead. The U.S. Supreme Court has required that juries be provided some semblance of guidance to weigh evidence in capital sentencing. In Penry v. Lynaugh, the Court struck down a statute that removed jury discretion from consideration of aggravating and mitigating factors. In dictum, the Court noted that evidence of mental illness is a double-edged sword, but that it was unconstitutional to bar the jury from considering the potentially * Class of 2017, University of Southern California Gould School of Law, B.A. Psychology, University of Southern California, 2010. This Note suggests that recent trends in the depiction of psychopaths in popular media has constructively foreclosed the consideration of psychopathic evidence as potentially mitigating.
