Sudbin, whom is a great admirer of Medtner, opens his new disc with a generous selection of that composer’s solo piano music, beginning with the ‘Prologue’ from Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1, and closes with the Sonata tragica, composed shortly before Medtner left Russia in 1921, never to return. Johann Sebastian BACH Lutheran Masses II Missa in A major, BWV 234 & Missa in F major, BWV 233

Hana Blažiková, Joanne Lunn, Aki Matsui, Robin Blaze, Katsuhiko Nakashima, Gerd Türk, Yusuke Fujii, Peter Kooij, Dominik Wörner, Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

During the reformation the traditional forms of church service had been fundamentally altered, and in German churches Latin had yielded to the country’s own language. To an extent, however, the Latin mass text did remain in use in Protestant church music in particular the Kyrie and Gloria sections. Albeit incomplete, this form of mass setting was termed ‘Missa’; nowadays the pieces are often referred to as ‘Lutheran Masses’. Bach’s famous Mass in B minor, later expanded into a complete mass, began its existence as a work of this kind, and four other examples from Bach’s pen have survived. The two Lutheran Masses recorded here make extensive use of earlier compositions by Bach and BIS2121 include reworkings of arias and choruses from , but each of the four masses also has its own £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) unmistakable artistic profle. This is the second volume of Lutheran masses performed by Bach Collegium Japan and Masaaki Suzuki.

Dmitri SHOSTAKOVICH, arr. Rudolf Barshai Shostakovich + Chamber Op. 73a & 83a and East European folk tunes the re:orchestra, Roberto Beltrán-Zavala The two ‘Chamber Symphonies’ recorded here are in fact two of Dmitri Shostakovich’s celebrated string quartets, orchestrated by Rudolf Barshai whom, as a member of the Borodin Quartet, enjoyed a long collaboration with Shostakovich. His Third and Fourth String Quartets, Opp. 73 and 83, were composed in 1946 and 1949 respectively, during the aftermath of World War II and the onset of BIS2227 Stalin’s terror. The disc is part of a project called ‘Essential Music’ initiated by the re:orchestra, a young and vibrant ensemble based in Rotterdam. Together with artistic director, the Mexican-Dutch £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) conductor Roberto Beltrán-Zavala, the ensemble regularly undertakes multidisciplinary projects. For the present disc Vasile Nedea has arranged a Russian klezmer dance, a group of folk melodies from Transylvania and Muntenia, and two Romanian dances: Turceasca and Hora de la Goicea.

Antonio VIVALDI Recorder Concertos Concerto in G major, RV 443 (originally C major); Concerto in F major, RV 442; Concerto in C major, RV 444; Concerto in E minor, RV 445 (originally A minor); Concerto in C minor, RV 441; Concerto in A minor, RV 108; Concerto in D major, RV 92 Dan Laurin 1B1, Jan Bjøranger, Anna Paradiso, Jonas Nordberg The Swedish recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin has demonstrated his remarkable versatility on some thirty recordings for BIS. However, in a recording career that stretches over almost 30 years, Laurin keeps returning to one particular set of works: the concertos by Antonio Vivaldi. The Concertos RV 441, 443 and 444 are included on this, his latest release. As he explains in his own liner notes for the present disc, he was inspired by his work on transcribing BIS2035 and performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: ‘A close reading of RV441 and RV443–445 reveals great similarities £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) between these works and The Four Seasons: sudden changes of moods, turbulent emotions, burlesque whims mixed with sublime beauty and elegance… My aim here is to explore the recorder concertos with the same freedom and spontaneity that characterize the modern-day approach to the Seasons’.

Johan Helmich ROMAN (1694-1758) The 12 Keyboard Sonatas, Nos 8–12 Sonatas VIII – XII BeRI 232–236; Sonata in C major, BeRI 215

Johan AGRELL (1701-65): Sonata II in C major Anna Paradiso Roman’s collection of Twelve Keyboard Sonatas was preserved in a manuscript assembled around 1748, but had most likely been composed in the course of the two decades before that. (One movement in Sonata III is labelled ‘a Napoli’, placing it in the autumn of 1736.) Consisting of between three and seven movements, the pieces have been referred to both as ‘suites’ and ‘sonatas’. Whatever the label, the collection is a BIS2135 fascinating testimony to a period of great stylistic diversity and change. In these recordings, Anna £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) Paradiso emphasizes this aspect, performing the sonatas on three different instruments – a French and an Italian harpsichord and a copy of a Swedish clavichord from 1742 – with well-judged ornamentations and use of rubato.

The pieces chosen for this programme span most of Poulenc’s career, from the Trois Mouvements Perpétuels, written at age 19, to the fnal Improvisations, completed four years before his death. Pierre BOULEZ Complete Music for Solo Piano Deuxième Sonate; Douze Notations; Incises; Première Sonate; Une page d’ephéméride; Troisième Sonate Marc Ponthus Pierre Boulez’s solo keyboard output remains heavily weighted in favour of the most radical, intransigent BRIDGE 9456A/B phase of his development—his twenties—although it is no coincidence that these were also his most productive, self-assured years as a composer. On these discs, Marc Ponthus plays all of Boulez’s solo piano £9.00 music, including the expanded 2001 version of Incises, and the unfnished Third Sonata, one of the essential termini of the post-war avant-garde project in its most ‘heroic’ phase, and in many respects the decisive venture of Boulez’s creative life.

With his artful polyphonic style, Monk ingeniously gave the Romantic ‘midnight piece’ a jazz makeover. Today’s virtuoso performers, even when in an ensemble, play with an ease and agility that allays any fears one might have about their instruments’ reputation for being simply big-boned.

Walter BRAUNFELS (1882-1954) Lieder (‘Songs’) Konrad Jarnot, Marlis Petersen, Eric Schneider The music of Walter Braunfels went into decline twice: frst, when the Nazis declared his music ‘degenerate art’, and again C5251 when post-war Germany had little use for the various schools of tonal music, when the arbiters of taste considered any form of romantic music – almost the whole pre-war aesthetic – to be tainted. Walter Braunfels had a flair for drama and £9.00 his operas demonstrate how carefully he considered the texts. This is also apparent in his songs, which are early works, all but two of which he composed prior to his most popular opera The Birds.
