With the ever growing popularity of these entertainment methods from Korea, they are not only topping music and tv charts but also evolving into a business worth billions of dollars and most importantly it looks sustainable with the innovation and disruption they are bringing into the world market. INTRODUCTION When in the 1990s diplomatic relations were made between China and South Korea, South Korean soap dramas like ‘What is Love’ began airing on Chinses television. It soon gained a lot of popularity, with millions of Chinese tuning in to watch the show with their friends and family. Cut to some years later in the 2000s and now in the second decade of this century, there are hundreds of Korean TV series and Korean Pop bands making waves internationally. It is therefore evident how the impact fully the South Korean culture is being propagated across the globe. Being a country that boasts of heavy exports of cellphones and gadgets as such as well as cars and other automobiles have now added K-Pop and K- soaps in the leading export industry, quite possibly on the 2nd or 3rd place. -

Abstract: Management of crowding at subway platform is essential to improving services, preventing train delays and ensuring passenger safety. Establishing effective measures to mitigate crowding at platform requires accurate estimation of actual crowding levels. At present, there are temporal and spatial constraints since subway platform crowding is assessed only at certain locations, done every 1~2 years, and counting is performed manually Notwithstanding, data from smart cards is considered real-time big data that is generated 24 hours a day and thus, deemed appropriate basic data for estimating crowding. This study proposes the use of smart card data in creating a model that dynamically estimates crowding. It first defines crowding as demand, which can be translated into passengers dynamically moving along a subway network. In line with this, our model also identifies the travel trajectory of individual passengers, and is able to calculate passenger flow, which concentrates and disperses at the platform, every minute. Lastly, the level of platform crowding is estimated in a way that considers the effective waiting area of each platform structure. Focusing on the Street Quarter of Mapo-Ro in Seoul Young-Jin
Urbanities, Vol. 8 · No 2· November 2018 © 2018 Urbanities High-rise Buildings and Social Inequality: Focusing on the Street Quarter of Mapo-ro in Seoul Young-Jin Kim (Sungshin University, South Korea) [email protected] In this article I discuss the cause and the effects of the increase in high-rise buildings in the ‘street quarter’ of Mapo-ro in Seoul, South Korea. First, I draw on official reports and Seoul Downtown Redevelopment Master Plans to explore why this phenomenon has occurred. Second, I investigate the sociocultural effects of high-rise buildings using evidence collected through an application of participant observation, that is, a new walking method for the study of urban street spaces. I suggest that the Seoul government’s implementation of deregulation and benefits for developers to facilitate redevelopment in downtown Seoul has resulted in the increase of high-rise buildings. The analysis also demonstrates that this increase has contributed to gentrification and has led to the growth of private gated spaces and of the distance between private and public spaces. Key words: High-rise buildings, residential and commercial buildings, walking, Seoul, Mapo-ro, state-led gentrification. Introduction1 First, I wish to say how this study began. In the spring of 2017, a candlelight rally was held every weekend in Gwanghwamun square in Seoul to demand the impeachment of the President of South Korea. On 17th February, a parade was added to the candlelight rally. That day I took photographs of the march and, as the march was going through Mapo-ro,2 I was presented with an amazing landscape filled with high-rise buildings.
