ACTA KOR ANA VOL. 14, NO. 1, JUNE 2011: 33–71 SOMEWHERE BETWEEN ANTI-HEROISM AND PANTOMIME: SONG KANG-HO AND THE UNCANNY FACE OF THE KOREAN CINEMA By BRIAN YECIES This article explores the trajectory of Song Kang-ho’s on-screen performances from the release of his fourth film, Number 3 (1997), to one of his most recent films, Thirst (2009). As a case study, it reveals new insights about this popular and representative actor’s numerous screen personae and how they have enabled audiences to peer into a cine- matic surface that reflects back a mixture of anti-heroism and pantomime. Beneath the many costumes and performance styles he adopts, audiences have come to see a human being with everyday problems and concerns. In a way reminiscent of the French panto- mime clown Pierrot, Song’s characters reflect a depth of human feeling and compassion modulated by a comic undercurrent—the tension between these overlapping layers is precisely what holds his various personae together. Key words: Song Kang-ho, Korean Cinema, stardom, Park Chan-wook, Kim Jee-woon INTRODUCTION Every actor and actress constructs a persona over the course of his or her career, but few become stars. A star is an actor whose persona transcends the sum total of his or her performances (Belton 1994: 89). Song Kang-ho is a classic movie star whose acting ability is well known to the film industry and whose performances are appreciated by audiences in South Korea (hereafter Korea) and abroad. He has acted in some of the contemporary Korean cinema’s most profitable and critically acclaimed feature films, productions which have contributed to the national film industry’s current global notoriety. -

Keberadaan Korean wave di Indonesia menjadi fenomena yang menarik untuk diteliti. Penelitian ini membahas tentang peranan kebudayaan populer Korea, Korean Drama (K-Drama) dalam fenomena Korean wave yang terjadi di Indonesia. Drama Korea atau K-Drama menjadi awal kemunculan dari Korean wave di Indonesia. Penggunaan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan historis pada penelitian ini, bertujuan untuk dapat merekonstruksi K-Drama yang muncul di Indonesia, khususnya di Stasiun TV Indosiar dari tahun 2002 hingga tahun 2013. Melalui analisis data-data serial TV Korea yang tayang di Indonesia, penelitian ini menjelaskan tentang perkembangan K-Drama sebagai pemicu dari munculnya Korean wave, perkembangan K-Drama di Indonesia, hingga dampak yang ditimbulkan dari K-Drama seperti kemunculan eksistensi produk budaya pop Korea lainnya, yaitu K-Pop dan K-Style di Indonesia. K-Drama memiliki peranan yang cukup penting atas Korean wave di Indonesia. Di mana hal-hal tersebut dapat terlihat pada dampak K-Drama di Indonesia, seperti kemunculan komunitas-komunitas pecinta K-Drama, hadirnya situs dari Indonesia yang menyajikan informasi seputar Korea, bahkan hingga maraknya acara-acara yang mengundang aktor, penyanyi, idola-idola Korea ke Indonesia. Korean Wave sendiri menjadi soft power Korea Selatan melalui budaya populernya yang diekspor ke berbagai negara dalam bentuk K-Drama, K-Pop, K-Style, kuliner dan teknologi. -

본문(43-3_2012) 2012.9.28 3:3 PM 페이지447 447 The Structure of the Appeal of Korean Wave Texts Sooyeon Lee* In this paper, texts from the first and second Korean Waves are content-analyzed in order to better understand the nature of their popularity. The text of the first wave is represented by eight Korean television serials popular in the recipient countries of the first Korean Wave, while the text of the second is the ten K-pop music videos most viewed on YouTube. The results show that the structures of appeal of the texts of the two phases are quite distinct from one another. The appeal of the first wave texts is based on symbolic pleasure, but that of the second lies on the imaginary. Korean tele- vision serials reflect Korean society and their global fans partake in and share Korean fantasies and dreams. K-pop is of the Lacanian imaginary and excludes the social; it may be its aspiration to avoid the symbolic and indulge in the imaginary plenitude that appeals to global fans of K-pop.
