Jain Muskan, Nelly Kavira Mangu Mangu, International Journal of Advance Research, Ideas and Innovations in Technology. ISSN: 2454-132X Impact factor: 4.295 (Volume 4, Issue 1) Available online at www.ijariit.com K-Pop and K-Dramas: A Billion Dollar Business Muskan Jain Kavira Mangu Mangu Nelly Christ University, Bangalore, Karnataka Christ University, Bangalore, Karnataka [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT The paper demonstrates how the South Korean Pop music and TV-dramas have proven their mark around the globe. With the ever growing popularity of these entertainment methods from Korea, they are not only topping music and tv charts but also evolving into a business worth billions of dollars and most importantly it looks sustainable with the innovation and disruption they are bringing into the world market. Keywords: Pop Music, TV-Dramas, South Korea, Disruption, Innovation. INTRODUCTION When in the 1990s diplomatic relations were made between China and South Korea, South Korean soap dramas like ‘What is Love’ began airing on Chinses television. It soon gained a lot of popularity, with millions of Chinese tuning in to watch the show with their friends and family. Cut to some years later in the 2000s and now in the second decade of this century, there are hundreds of Korean TV series and Korean Pop bands making waves internationally. It is therefore evident how the impact fully the South Korean culture is being propagated across the globe. Being a country that boasts of heavy exports of cellphones and gadgets as such as well as cars and other automobiles have now added K-Pop and K- soaps in the leading export industry, quite possibly on the 2nd or 3rd place.

  • Korean TV Dramas and the Selling of Place by Youjeong
Spectacular Cities, Speculative Storytelling: Korean TV Dramas and the Selling of Place By Youjeong Oh A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor You-tien Hsing, Chair Professor Richard A. Walker Professor Barrie Thorne Professor Paul E. Groth Fall 2013 Abstract Spectacular Cities, Speculative Storytelling: Korean TV Dramas and the Selling of Place By Youjeong Oh Doctor of Philosophy in Geography University of California, Berkeley Professor You-tien Hsing, Chair This dissertation examines the relationships between popular culture, cities, and gendered social discourses, with a focus on contemporary Korean television dramas. Existing studies about Korean dramas have relied upon economic and cultural analysis to, in effect, celebrate their vibrant export to overseas markets and identify why they are popular in other East Asian countries. This study expands the scope into spatial and social realms by examining cities’ drama-sponsorship and drama-driven social activities. Deploying popular culture as an analytical category directly shaping and transforming material, urban and social conditions, I argue that the cultural industry of Korean television dramas not only functions as its own, dynamic economic sector, but also constitutes urban processes and social discourses of contemporary South Korea. Drawing upon interdisciplinary methods including ethnography and content analysis, I examine Korean television dramas from the multiple vantage points of producers, audience, storytelling, and city-sponsorship, and elucidate why and how these four arenas are deeply intertwined. Their mutual entanglement, in turn, requires us to see Korean television dramas as more than just commercial entertainment; they become a medium through which we can contemplate labor conditions in the cultural industry, the political economies of development in regional cities, and gender politics in Korea.

In this competitive environment, differentiation of countries from other countries, preserving the country's image, creating new market shares to develop the economy, expanding country's targets and meeting the demands of citizens are directly related to government strategies. It is an inevitable fact that governments have turned to different strategic areas as an element of soft power and evaluated their alternatives; It has created many new economic leverages such as cultural and technological developments that will directly contribute to the national economy. New development strategies of countries are influenced by many factors such as global, political, economic and technological. Song 1 Politics of Sexuality and Nation in the Melodrama Love Rain Exported to twelve different countries and regions including China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia, the Americas and Europe, the Korean melodrama, Love Rain, was immensely popular when first began airing in Korea in 2012. Love Rain depicts a 1970’s pure love and a love from the present day at the same time. It shows how the children of a previous ill-fated couple, who met in the 1970s, managed to meet and fall in love. In-Ha and Yoon-Hee, an art student who is very shy, met and fell in love with each other during their college years in the 1970s but unfortunately their love was never achieved. Now in the present 21st Century, In-Ha’s son, Joon, a liberal photographer, meets and falls in love with the daughter of Yoon-Hee, Hana, a cheerful girl whose personality is very different from her mother’s. Baldacchino views K-dramas as a “refractory process that expresses the dilemmas engendered by end-of-the-century attitudes towards romantic love” (Baldacchino 2014: 6). He notes how he noticed that many young Korean women tend to make reference to K-dramas when describing their own dilemmas they had to go through in their daily lives. Scene from Love Rain To analyze this particular melodrama “Love is like the rain. Both happiness and sadness.” in more depth, I research the history Yoon-Hee and In-Ha encountered their first love after 30 of representations of romantic love, years.

  • The Korean Educational Contents Improvement Directions Through K-Drama
The Korean Educational Contents Improvement Directions through K-drama Il-Soo Lee, Chin-Oh Chu SangMyung Univ, Korea. E-mail : [email protected], [email protected] 1. Introduction The popularity of Korean culture such as Korean drama, Korean movie, and K-pop has improved positive national brand image as itself and also brought up interest across Korean culture.[1] As Korean wave fans' interest of learning Korean language has increased, Korean educational broadcasting programs started to be made by using Korean wave contents. It seems like that Korean wave began from the popularity of Korean celebrities like Bae Yong-joon, but there exists the steps of Korean wave stream. In the beginning, fans' interest started from the celebrities' TV shows or Korean dramas, the interest led to learning Korean language, the two steps naturally makes Korea national brand image, and, consequently, this whole process makes people recognize South Korea positively. Finally, the process improves the environment of consuming Korean contents and products, and results in creating profit. Therefore, in order to establish Korea's positive and dynamic national image in the stream of fans' interest which started from Korean wave contents to learning Korean language, Korean educational contents should be used more as a tool as planned. Based on that, Korean dramas and TV shows among currently associated to Korea educational contents which use Korean pop culture as theme need to be considered and also currently produced contents' vulnerable points and improvement direction need to be discussed in this paper. 2. Korean language education through Korean wave contents; focused on Dugeundugeun Hangugeo 2.1.
