February 2013 List Blu-Ray New Releases tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 FEBRUARY 2013 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer As has been well publicised, 2013 marks the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, alongside the bi-centenaries of the births of Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi. All clearly made significant contributions to classical music history, so we are celebrating the anniversaries this month by offering great reductions on relevant issues from DG, Decca and EMI. There are several landmark recordings featured from the likes of Britten himself, Karajan, Solti, Muti, Abbado and more. See pp.12-14 for titles from DG and Decca, and p.18 for titles from EMI. New releases also feature the celebratory composers: titles worth pointing out are the limited edition Complete Verdi box set from DG that promises to be a popular collector’s item, two new Britten box sets from EMI, the recent recording of Die Walkure from Gergiev and the Mariinsky forces, plus a recital of Wagner from tenor Jonas Kaufmann. One of our new special offers this month features a label that has not been seen on our lists for some time: Symposium. Many of you are fans of historical issues and Symposium have a fascinating catalogue that largely covers recordings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This may prove too early even for keen historical collectors, but we have managed to secure some very special prices and hope that they might spark a bit of interest. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba.     Joyce Yang Piano Blessed with “poetic and sensitive pianism” (Washington Post) and a “wondrous sense of color” (San Francisco Classical Voice), pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences with her virtuosity, lyricism, and interpretive sensitivity. As a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Yang showcases her colorful musical personality in solo recitals and collaborations with the world’s top orchestras and chamber musicians. Yang came to international attention in 2005 when she won the silver medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The youngest contestant at 19 years old, she took home two additional awards: the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for Best Performance of Chamber Music (with the Takàcs Quartet) and the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for Best Performance of a New Work. Since her spectacular debut, she has blossomed into an “astonishing artist” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). As far as research funding is concerned, researchers at South African universities are increasingly dependent upon new sources for research funding. This includes national and international opportunities alike. Apart from the active support of research by the University's management, a variety of internal support services provide assistance to researchers. These include the library and information services, capacity building workshops, information technology, infrastructure, the maintenance of laboratories and equipment, central analytical services, and support from the administrative and financial divisions, without which it would be impossible to conduct research of this calibre.
