February 2013 List Blu-Ray New Releases tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 FEBRUARY 2013 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer As has been well publicised, 2013 marks the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten, alongside the bi-centenaries of the births of Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi. All clearly made significant contributions to classical music history, so we are celebrating the anniversaries this month by offering great reductions on relevant issues from DG, Decca and EMI. There are several landmark recordings featured from the likes of Britten himself, Karajan, Solti, Muti, Abbado and more. See pp.12-14 for titles from DG and Decca, and p.18 for titles from EMI. New releases also feature the celebratory composers: titles worth pointing out are the limited edition Complete Verdi box set from DG that promises to be a popular collector’s item, two new Britten box sets from EMI, the recent recording of Die Walkure from Gergiev and the Mariinsky forces, plus a recital of Wagner from tenor Jonas Kaufmann. One of our new special offers this month features a label that has not been seen on our lists for some time: Symposium. Many of you are fans of historical issues and Symposium have a fascinating catalogue that largely covers recordings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This may prove too early even for keen historical collectors, but we have managed to secure some very special prices and hope that they might spark a bit of interest. Other new offers this month include selected box sets from Chandos, the Onyx, Somm, CRD and Heritage labels, and a fantastic range of DVDs from DG, Decca and EMI. Dear Customer, As summer gives way to autumn (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least), the record labels start rolling out their big guns in the run-up to the festive season. This year is no exception, with some notable high-profile issues: the complete Tchaikovsky Project from the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, and Richard Strauss tone poems from Chailly in Lucerne (both on Decca); the Beethoven Piano Concertos from Jan Lisiecki, and Mozart Piano Trios from Barenboim (both on DG). The independent labels, too, have some particularly strong releases this month, with Chandos discs including Bartók's Bluebeard’s Castle from Edward Gardner in Bergen, and the keenly awaited second volume of British tone poems under Rumon Gamba. Meanwhile Hyperion bring out another volume (no.79!) of their Romantic Piano Concerto series, more Machaut from the wonderful Orlando Consort (see our cover picture), and Brahms songs from soprano Harriet Burns. Another Hyperion Brahms release features as our 'Disc of the Month': the Violin Sonatas in a superb new recording from star team Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien (see below).

  • Joyce Yang Piano Blessed With
Joyce Yang Piano Blessed with “poetic and sensitive pianism” (Washington Post) and a “wondrous sense of color” (San Francisco Classical Voice), pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences with her virtuosity, lyricism, and interpretive sensitivity. As a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition silver medalist and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Yang showcases her colorful musical personality in solo recitals and collaborations with the world’s top orchestras and chamber musicians. Yang came to international attention in 2005 when she won the silver medal at the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. The youngest contestant at 19 years old, she took home two additional awards: the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for Best Performance of Chamber Music (with the Takàcs Quartet) and the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for Best Performance of a New Work. Since her spectacular debut, she has blossomed into an “astonishing artist” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). She has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Sydney, and Toronto symphony orchestras, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, and the BBC Philharmonic (among many others), working with such distinguished conductors as Edo de Waart, Lorin Maazel, James Conlon, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson, Bramwell Tovey, Peter Oundjian, and Jaap van Zweden. In recital, Yang has taken the stage at New York’s Lincoln Center and Metropolitan Museum; the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Chicago’s Symphony Hall; and Zurich’s Tonhalle. Yang kicks off the 2015/16 season with a tour of eight summer festivals (Aspen, Bridgehampton, Grand Tetons, La Jolla, Ravinia, Seattle, Southeastern Piano Festival, and Bravo! Vail) before commencing a steady stream of debuts, return engagements, and notable chamber music concerts.

  • Stellenbosch University Research Report 2004
STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY RESEARCH REPORT 2004 Editor: Senior Director: Research Stellenbosch University Stellenbosch 7602 ISBN 0-7972-1170-5 i FOREWORD The 2004 Research Report provides a comprehensive record of the University's research outputs. In addition to this overall survey of research at the institution, perspectives are provided on the performance of individual faculties and departments. Further statistical perspectives on research output and the nature of research activities are presented in other publications of the Division of Research Development, i.e. Research @ Stellenbosch; and Perspectives of Stellenbosch University. As in the past, a variety of persons and organizations contributed to the University's research programme. Stellenbosch University wishes to express particular recognition to the statutory research councils and commissions, government departments, private enterprises, foundations and individuals for their continued support of our research. As far as research funding is concerned, researchers at South African universities are increasingly dependent upon new sources for research funding. This includes national and international opportunities alike. Stellenbosch University therefore attaches great value to regional cooperation and substantive scientific agreements with other universities local and abroad, and to bilateral research and development agreements between South Africa and other countries. Apart from the active support of research by the University's management, a variety of internal support services provide assistance to researchers. These include the library and information services, capacity building workshops, information technology, infrastructure, the maintenance of laboratories and equipment, central analytical services, and support from the administrative and financial divisions, without which it would be impossible to conduct research of this calibre. We acknowledge with appreciation the dedication and excellent contributions made by Stellenbosch University staff members to the institution's research output.
