Fig pollination is now widely regarded as a model system for the study of coevolved mutualism, and earlier reviews have focused on the evolution of resource conflicts between pollinating fig wasps, their hosts, and their parasites. Fig wasps have also been a focus of research on sex ratio evolution, the evolution of virulence, coevolu- tion, population genetics, host-parasitoid interactions, community ecology, historical biogeography, and conservation biology. This new synthesis of fig wasp research at- tempts to integrate recent contributions with the older literature and to promote research on diverse topics ranging from behavioral ecology to molecular evolution. One of which is the Kalahan Forest Reserve (KFR) managed by the Ikalahans, a cultural minority group that practices sustainable agroforestry systems. The study used a modified quadrat sampling method (QSM) where a total of eight 1-km transect with 20-m width were established to assess the biodiversity of the area. The sampling was undertaken in three layers: overstorey (10 plots each measuring 10 m x 10 m, spaced 100 m away from each other in each 1-km transect), intermediate (3 m x 3 m inside the 10 m x 10 m plot), and understorey (1 m x 1 m inside the 3 m x 3 m plot). Results of the study show that Benguet pine (Pinus insularis Endl) and brown oak (Quercus semecarpifolia Sm.) have high importance values of 49.07 and 45.80, respectively. Moreover, the results of the study indicate that KFR has very high biological diversity as manifested by the value of Shannon-Weiner (3.50) and the Shannon diversity index scale of Fernando.

Box 369, Makawao, Maui, HI 96768 2007 INTRODUCTION Invasive plant species pose a threat to Hawaii's economy, ecology, and way of life. Early detection and rapid response is one method used to minimize the damage caused by invasive species. It is hoped that by finding and removing weeds before they become widespread and out of control, that overall control costs will be reduced, removal efforts will be more feasible, and damage to resources will be minimized. The Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) works to prevent, detect, and remove plant species early as part of their overall strategy to combat invasive weeds. MISC is based on the island of Maui, but also conducts work throughout Maui County which includes the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe. To assist in their early detection efforts on Lanai, we conducted a roadside survey and expert interviews for selected target plant species. Roadside surveys and expert interviews have proven to be a useful way to detect incipient invasive plants in Hawaii (Starr et al. 2003a). Previous surveys of this nature were conducted on Maui in the years 2000-2001 (Starr et al. 2006a) and on Molokai in 2005 (Starr et al. 2005).

PALAYPAYON Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau Department of Environment and Natural Resources College, Laguna 4031 September 2002 Foreword The search for an alternative approach to the possible improvement of the health condition of the Filipino people has long been a problem by the government. The cost of modern medicine is very prohibitive such that going back to the so-called traditional medicine seems to be inevitable. Today, there is an increasing interest in the development of traditional medicine (referred to by other people as herbal medicine) in the country as evidenced by the growing number of organizations focusing on it. Experts all over the ASEAN Region have advocated the continued use of medicinal plants which are proven effective. They have further recommended greater awareness on the potential values of traditional remedies/indigenous materials which can be used either alone or together with modern medicine. Among these indigenous materials are forest trees. Early records of Quisumbing (1978) indicated 196 species of such forest trees. Forest tree species have been found to have potential therapeutic values that could meet the medicinal needs of people in the rural areas and those in the upland. People do not have to depend on commercial medicines in the drugstore to cure certain ailments. They cannot always afford to buy these so-called modern medicines due to exorbitant prices. This 11th series of the DENR Recommends presents a list of some forest tree species found to have curative properties based on observations and actual experiences of a number of people, as well as on previous research works of experts such as Quisumbing (1978), de Padua and others (1977; 1978; 1981), the Department of Health (1995) and sources listed in the References.

Floral Diversity and Habitat Assessment at Mt. Malarayat Brgy
Ecosystems & Development Journal 8(1): 3–14 April 2018 ISSN 2012–3612 ABSTRACT Mountain ecosystem assessments are usually based on species or taxonomic groups, structural characters of forest ecosystems and/or biodiversity indicators derived from taxonomic variables. Amidst advanced science tools for Floral Diversity and species diversity studies, forest biodiversity data in the light of ecology and taxonomy for promoting conservation and Habitat Assessment at enhancing biodiversity management especially in urban and urbanizing areas, are few. In Mt. Malarayat, Brgy. Malitlit, Mt. Malarayat Lipa City, Batangas, a rapid plant diversity survey was conducted to provide the needed biodiversity information. Brgy. Malitlit, Lipa City, An approximately 2.3 km BMS transect was established and all plant species were identified within the 10–meter width (5 Batangas meters from each side of the trail). This has resulted to the loss of its ecosystem services. In the watershed area, restoration efforts showed encouraging results where secondary forest is flourishing. Secondary forest growth provides tremendous potential for large amounts of carbon sequestration. This study aimed to determine the carbon sequestration potential of the secondary growth forest along Abuan watershed in Ilagan, Isabela. Specifically, it was conducted to identify the tree species present in the area and estimate the amount of carbon sequestered annually by the above ground carbon cover of the trees in the study area. Ten (10) sampling points measuring 20m x 20m were established using Point center quarter method (PCQM). Tree census was conducted and identification was done up to its species level. The amount of carbon sequestered by the trees was measured. Twenty six (26) species was documented. The above ground carbon by the trees in the watershed is calculated at 18,452 kg. The species Shorea concorta (White lauan) has the highest amount of carbon sequestered while Dipterocarpus validus (Hagakhak) species sequestered the lowest.

The Metropolitan Ilocos Norte Watershed Forest Reserve (MINWFR) is among the remaining intact limestone formations and a critical protected area in northwestern Luzon. There have been few published floristic studies despite its undeniable rich biological importance. Therefore, this paper primarily aims to provide a preliminary checklist of vascular plants in MINWFR and their conservation status. Consequent field visits and surveys were made from April 2019 to March 2020. Results revealed a total of 173 species distributed in 140 genera belonging to 59 families. The most represented families are Rubiaceae, Fabaceae, Orchidaceae, and Malvaceae.

Aggangan1, in Toledo, Cebu, was surveyed with the goal of rehabilitating their mined-out area through Nelson M. Pampolina2, bioremediation (the use of dominant plants and mycorrhizal fungi present in area to contain/ Nina M. Cadiz3 and reduce pollutants). From five one km transect lines in five sites, the survey indicated that Asuncion K. Raymundo3 the vegetation was classified as a disturbed grass-shrubland-savanna-agroforest plant community with tree plantations in rehabilitated sites. Plant composition comprised 69 species belonging to 66 genera and 35 families which include trees, shrubs, herbs, creepers, vines, agricultural or agroforest crops. Fruit bodies of ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMF), namely: Pisolithus, Scleroderma, Thelephora and Boletellus were found under Acacia auriculiformis, A. mangium, Eucalyptus urophylla and E. camaldulensis. Pisolithus were the most dominant. For arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), out of 50 plants collected, 10-100% roots of Lycopodium, Saccharum spontaneum, Nephrolepsis, Acacia mangium and Stachytarpheta 1 National Institute of Molecular Biology and jamaicensis were colonized by AMF. All roots of S. jamaicensis were colonized solely by Biotechnology (BIOTECH), University of the Glomus sp. Pithecellobium dulce harboured the highest spore density (2,575 spores/plant/30g Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), College, Laguna dry soil), consisting of Glomus (42%), Acaulospora (24%) and Entrophospora (37%).
