ON SHORE COMPETITION

TNT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – ENJOYING THE PURSUIT

A feast of swimming was had over the weekend 27th to 29th September at the 2013 TNT NATIONAL SHORT COURSE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The competition was held over 4 sessions at the Coronation College School 25m pool in Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

Administrators and technical officials worked tirelessly behind the scenes to allow for the smooth running of the event as the swimmers focused on doing their best in their individual events and relays and also enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow team mates. During the Championships we saw 72 enthusiastic athletes come together for 3 days of unforgettable moments as the rain clouds disappeared and the sun shone through.

Ten (10) overseas based swimmers travelled in from Australia and competed alongside our onshore swimmers. They were Georgia-Leigh Vele and Shanice Paraka both from St Hilda’s Swim Club, Barbara Vali from Acacia Bayside Swim Club, Jocelyn and Sean Flynn from West Brisbane Club, James Runnegar, Ryan Maskelyne and Stanford Gore Kawale from the Ipswich Grammar Swim Club, Millie Knight from St Peters Lutheran College School, & Ryan Liew from the Churchie School. Many inspiring performances from our athletes were witnessed as they took to the water in competition and many personal best times and records continued to tumble in what was an event where sporting abilities shone through, allowing our athletes, in all age groups, to feel success and enjoy the spirit of competition. Thank you to our very valuable Club coaches who have worked tirelessly to prepare our athletes to compete over the weekend.

The championships would not have been a successful reality without the support of host Club LASC under the expert eye of LASC President Eric Langelet and his executive.

PNGSI expresses their sincere gratitude, appreciation and thanks to all those involved, at all levels, who have given up their free time to help in the preparation and professional running of the TNT Championships.

PNGSI sincerely thank TNT for their continued sponsorship of these championships under the direction of TNT General Manager Doug Maskelyne. The TNT Air Cargo corporate business has supported the PNG national short course championships since 2004 (10 years).

The running of the TNT National Championships in an efficient and professional manner was made possible by the co-operation of many parties; the many technical officials under the direction of our FINA Referee Sarenah Pini and PNG Referee Albert Vigil; our major sponsor TNT and support sponsor in kind Guard Dog (providing safe travel to the BASC Club members and PNGSI Executive to and from the airport while in Lae) and Trukai for making available a bus during the championships for BASC members, and the organisers and support sponsors in both Lae

Swim Club and Boroko Swim Club.

It was an important competition to further develop our athletes in race practice, gaining confidence in competing and believing they can achieve.

Commonwealth Games Relay In the lead up to the XX Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 23rd July to 3rd August 2014, the Glasgow Games Queen's Baton Relay commenced its journey on 9th October 2013 visiting all 71 Commonwealth nations.

The 248 day journey the Queen’s Baton will take will embrace the Commonwealth’s diversity as it passes throughout communities of each country.

The Queens Baton containing the message of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, arrived in Papua New Guinea on 4th November for a two day event and departed on 8th November 2013.

The relay took part in Port Moresby, National Capital District and then was flown to Kavieng, New Ireland Province.

In the Port Moresby leg of the Relay Ryan Pini took part as a representative of PNG Swimming while those who volunteered their time from swimming to be a part of this memorable occassion were Villiwa Puana, Tau Diari, Rayman Henao and Nathan Nades.

Globally, UNICEF and Glasgow 2014 are aiming to make it the biggest ever moment for children all across the Commonwealth. In PNG, the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee and UNICEF have joined hands to use the power of sport to enable children to be the best they can under the partnership theme of “be the best you can”.

Eleven children were part of the baton bearers from the Independence Hill at Waigani while 300 children had the opportunity to hold and pass the baton in a logo formation during the school program at Amini Park.

“Children and young people all over the world love sport, UNICEF harness this power and passion in our work, using sport to help an estimated 10 million children worldwide to live, learn and play”, UNICEF

representative, Baba Danbappa said to the children gathered in Port Moresby.

“The Queen’s Baton Relay has provided an opportunity for the PNG Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association to forge a new partnership with UNICEF using the power of sport to reach as many children through this event, connecting them to the Games, enhancing their lives and building their aspirations”, said PNGOC Secretary General Auvita Rapilla.
