ON SHORE COMPETITION TNT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS – ENJOYING THE PURSUIT A feast of swimming was had over the weekend 27th to 29th September at the 2013 TNT NATIONAL SHORT COURSE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. The competition was held over 4 sessions at the Coronation College School 25m pool in Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Administrators and technical officials worked tirelessly behind the scenes to allow for the smooth running of the event as the swimmers focused on doing their best in their individual events and relays and also enjoyed the camaraderie of their fellow team mates. During the Championships we saw 72 enthusiastic athletes come together for 3 days of unforgettable moments as the rain clouds disappeared and the sun shone through. Ten (10) overseas based swimmers travelled in from Australia and competed alongside our onshore swimmers. They were Georgia-Leigh Vele and Shanice Paraka both from St Hilda’s Swim Club, Barbara Vali from Acacia Bayside Swim Club, Jocelyn and Sean Flynn from West Brisbane Club, James Runnegar, Ryan Maskelyne and Stanford Gore Kawale from the Ipswich Grammar Swim Club, Millie Knight from St Peters Lutheran College School, & Ryan Liew from the Churchie School. Many inspiring performances from our athletes were witnessed as they took to the water in competition and many personal best times and records continued to tumble in what was an event where sporting abilities shone through, allowing our athletes, in all age groups, to feel success and enjoy the spirit of competition. Thank you to our very valuable Club coaches who have worked tirelessly to prepare our athletes to compete over the weekend. The championships would not have been a successful reality without the support of host Club LASC under the expert eye of LASC President Eric Langelet and his executive. PNGSI expresses their sincere gratitude, appreciation and thanks to all those involved, at all levels, who have given up their free time to help in the preparation and professional running of the TNT Championships. PNGSI sincerely thank TNT for their continued sponsorship of these championships under the direction of TNT General Manager Doug Maskelyne. The TNT Air Cargo corporate business has supported the PNG national short course championships since 2004 (10 years). The running of the TNT National Championships in an efficient and professional manner was made possible by the co-operation of many parties; the many technical officials under the direction of our FINA Referee Sarenah Pini and PNG Referee Albert Vigil; our major sponsor TNT and support sponsor in kind Guard Dog (providing safe travel to the BASC Club members and PNGSI Executive to and from the airport while in Lae) and Trukai for making available a bus during the championships for BASC members, and the organisers and support sponsors in both Lae Swim Club and Boroko Swim Club. It was an important competition to further develop our athletes in race practice, gaining confidence in competing and believing they can achieve.
