DEVELOPING THE SWIM INDUSTRY asctaCONVENTION 2011

Sofitel Gold Coast 17th – 24th May

The continual growth in the size and scope of the asctaCONVENTION is indicative of the consistent quality provided at every asctaCONVENTION and the high regard it is afforded by the industry. This year, Online Registrations will streamline your bookings for the Convention, courses, accommodation and events.

US Olympic Club Program Coach for asctaCONVENTION 2011

At this year’s asctaCONVENTION the Coaching Stream missed out on having an International Keynote Speaker. With this in mind we were searched far and wide for the asctaCONVENTION 2011. We believe we have found the right person for the job in USA, Olympic Coach Richard (Dick) Shoulberg from the Germantown Academy in Philadelphia. Based in Fort Washington, Dick was the First Aquatic Director and Head Coach of the Girls and Boys Swim Teams at Germantown Academy, 1969 was also the year that the Germantown Academy Aquatic Club was established.

Dick has served as Head Coach for USA National and Junior National teams, Men’s and Women’s Pan-American and Pan-Pacific teams, Women’s Goodwill Games team; Advisory Coach 1988 Olympic Team; 1st Assistant Coach for the USA 1992 Men’s Olympic Team; an Advisory Coach for USA Women’s 2000 Olympic team; received many professional awards including those from NISCA and American Swimming Coaches Association and the PA Hall of Fame; coached several Olympians and world record holders including Dave Wharton and Dave Berkoff and has published numerous articles in various swimming magazines. He also contributed a chapter in “The Swim Coaching Bible” on IM training (available through the asctaSHOP). Dick is quoted as saying “My purpose of coaching is as a grass-root coach first and I have been fortunate enough to coach numerous Olympians that trained at Germantown Academy and also from four other countries.” Sneak Preview at 2011 asctaCONVENTION The Don Talbot Lecture. Being the Best Coach for Generation Y Athletes. Presented by Bo Hanson.

Traditional coaching with a technical skill focus no longer works with today’s Generation Y athletes. Discover the difference between this traditional style of coaching and “athlete centred” style and create measurable improvements in your athletes’ motivation and loyalty to you and your program.

Of the 14 drivers contributing to a successful Athlete Development Program, one driver in particular, has been proven to be the most critical. This key driver is the Coach Athlete Relationship which has become even more important with Generation Y athletes.

In this presentation, discover the other key drivers to successful Athlete Development Programs and how to create a quality Coach Athlete Relationship. This presentation by 4x Olympian and Coaching Consultant, Bo Hanson, is underpinned with interesting statistics and studies into what creates high performance sports coaching, including research from the Beijing Olympics.

Sneak Preview at 2011 asctaCONVENTION Managing Parents in Your Swim Program. Presented by Gary Barclay.

As a swimming coach you will come across many different scenarios in relation to how the parents of the children you coach handle different situations.

Proactive communication with parents is critical to ensure a positive relationship between coaches and parents. The communication should be a combination of personal feedback, team meetings and being upfront and honest with parents.

There are two key areas where some parents let their emotions get the best of them at swim meets and when it comes to the progression of their child.

This lecture will look at solutions to these situations as well as many other issues in relation to the management of parents in your swim program.

Gary Barclay is the presenter of this topic and his most recent book, “Swimming for Parents” is available from the asctaSHOP www.ascta.com.

Sneak Preview at 2011 asctaCONVENTION Emler Waterbabies. Presented by Jan Emler.

In this presentation, Jan will cover the six components necessary for the ideal baby swim class.

1. Incorporates Routine 2. Educates the Parents 3. Emphasizes Kicking Practice 4. Five Submergings Per Class 5. No Dead Time 6. Independence Time

No matter what your philosophy or technique in teaching babies to swim, a well rounded class touching on each of these six components will greatly enhance the success of any baby swim class. Jan will be covering in detail each of these components in her presentation.
