CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 201 1

The 2010-2011 year has been an extremely busy yet rewarding one for Auckland Swimming. The competition calendar has been fully booked and pool space has been utilised across the region to its maximum benefit.

Last year the Competitive Swim Group (CSG) submitted a restructured competition calendar, which has in the main, improved the delivery of competition to swimmers. Some alterations were required to some events, but the response has been by and large, a positive one. The calendar for the following twelve months has been fine tuned and will hopefully deliver a high calibre of competition.

The Auckland Swimming League has again proved an incredibly popular series of events. It is wonderful to see such a large number of ‘non-competitive’ swimmers competing. This has had a positive flow-on effect to competitive swimmer numbers.

In December 2010 Brian Palmer, Swimming Auckland’s Executive Officer, was awarded Administrator of the Year at the North Harbour Sports Awards. We were thrilled to see his time, effort and dedication to Auckland Swimming recognised in such a way.

As always in Auckland, access to suitable pool space has been an ongoing issue for all involved in our sport. There are exciting developments in the foreseeable future, such as the Millennium Institute pool project, that are a step in the right direction for Auckland. The face of Auckland has changed in the past 12 months with the ‘Super City’ concept becoming a reality. This has meant a lot of networking has been required on behalf of our association by our Executive Officer Brian Palmer. Auckland Council is one of the most important organisations that will affect the future of swimming in Auckland and its significance cannot be understated.

The past twelve months has had other distractions away from actual swimming in the pool, the most notable probably being the Project Vanguard review. As a Board we have varied opinions on aspects relating to the review and that highlights the fact that Swimming Auckland must have as much input from its clubs as is possible. This is important so the Board can fully understand and reflect the majority view of our stakeholder clubs. We accept that change is required and is inevitable for an improved end product to be delivered where it counts most, poolside.

Special tribute must be paid to the volunteers in our organisation. With our sport being totally reliant on them, we need to ensure that opportunities are made available to nurture, develop and maintain this vital human resource. Without our volunteers, swimming could not and would not function.

Sadly, in early 2011, Jill Vernon died suddenly. Jill was the most selfless, dedicated and giving volunteer I had ever had the pleasure of working with. It was only on attending the funeral service for Jill, that the full extent of how much she gave of her 8

time to so many different organisations became truly apparent. The impact of losing someone like Jill is immeasurable and she will be sadly missed by many people in many organisations for a long time to come.

I would like to conclude by expressing my thanks and appreciation to each member of the Auckland Swimming Board, our Executive Officer Brian Palmer, our Administration Officer Tonia Wheeler and everyone else involved in the variety of roles required to make our organisation function like it does. Without you, it would not happen. I guess we just have to keep reminding ourselves that at the end of the day, everything we do should be for one thing and one thing only, the swimmers.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Andrew Brown Chairman Auckland Swimming

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT 201 1

Our sport, like other sports, competes in a busy market place for the ‘leisure time and dollars’ of families. It is my belief that for the foreseeable future at least we will still be largely reliant on a volunteer base to equip ourselves to successfully compete in that market place. As with many other sports, we will continue to be one of ‘amateur volunteers delivering as professionally as possible’ with the association’s executive providing support and facilitation, and a little leadership thrown in! That is a view of the future which is not shared by some in our sport who see a different future, without as they refer to as ‘the revolving door of volunteers’. That we in Auckland Swimming have been able to hold our own in critical points of measurement such as competitive participation numbers and show some headway in other areas is a credit to our team of volunteers who contribute so much to the running of the sport here in Auckland.

Each club is comprised of committees who work tirelessly for the sport – how often do we hear the refrain “we are here for the swimmers”, and we know that while that phrase in its application may mean different things to different people it is a genuinely held view and drives so much of what is done within our sport. At a regional level we benefit enormously from those who give tirelessly of their time as volunteers in roles which range from the highly visible at our meets, to other roles which are simply never seen by the majority, equally vital, but which are fundamental to our sport’s success. To each of you who do so much, may I say “Thank You”, a thousand times over, “Thank You for all that you do.”

This year, very sadly, we bade farewell to dear friends. We were all shocked to hear in August of the death of Peter Bassett, husband to Tania and Dad to Kurt, Blake, Freddie, Charlie and Scarlett. Our deepest sympathies continue to reach out to the Bassett family, long-time supporters and members of the Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club and we think of them as they now cope without the larger-than-life presence of Peter, but we are heartened as watch the progress of Kurt returning from retirement.

January brought another unexpected and very sudden farewell to our friend and colleague Jill Vernon. She is sadly missed by us all and has left a large gap in our community. Our deepest sympathies remain with Neil, Deborah, Sarah and Andrew on the tragic and premature loss of a dearly loved mother and wife – we can only begin to imagine the huge void which remains in your lives but we hope you can find time to cherish the memories of a life lived to the full.

Auckland Life Member Wally Martin passed away peacefully in 2010 and as this report goes to press we have heard of the sad passing of Auckland Life Member Jack Greenwood, a life member since 1979 who died at the venerable age of 95 years. Only a few days previous to this Auckland Honours Award member, Edna Petersen who contributed so much in years past to the Avondale Club also passed away. She is survived by her husband Bill, two children and their families which include 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

In the past year the ASA hosted three Swimming New Zealand National meets (SNZ 5km Pool Championships, SNZ Juniors and SNZ Open Championships), together with six major events of our own (ASA Winters, ASA Distance & Relays, ASA Junior Invitational, ASA Age Group Invitational, The Anthony Mosse Classic and the ASA Open Championships.) Add to this heavy programme three seasons of the ASL Junior League involving well over 1,000 youngsters below the age of 12 years (most of whom had never previously swum at a competitive level), and the ASL Premier League with over 350 individual athletes participating, we can be forgiven for feeling that our resources were at times stretched pretty thin. However, with athletes from 6

11

years of age through to 76 years of age participating at all levels, there have been some stunning memories for those who participated as swimmers, volunteers, officials and spectators.

As if that wasn’t enough, in August we also hosted an Inter-Regional Challenge where two Auckland regional teams comprising of athletes 15 years of age and younger (who had not already been selected as part of a SNZ team), swam against teams from Northland, Counties Manukau and Bay of Plenty.

Auckland athletes were again well represented on the SNZ national teams from youth through to senior levels, and I am sure you all joined with us in the feeling of pride as our Auckland athletes brought home medals from the Pan Pacific Games (Emily Thomas, NSS) and the in (, , , and Daniel Bell, NSS).

As a swimming family we were all affected by the devastating earthquakes in Canterbury. We readily agreed to work with our colleagues from other regions, notably Swimming Bay of Plenty and Counties Manukau, and amongst other things agreed to redirect the proceeds from our ASA Open Championships to causes in Canterbury. We also worked together with the newly formed New Zealand Swimmers Association to deliver the resoundingly successful ANZACS for Canterbury event in April - all of which ‘just felt like the right thing for us to do.’ These events have affected our ‘bottom line’ and involved huge efforts by many, but have allowed us in conjunction together with our other regional colleagues to raise and contribute what will be in excess of $30,000 for causes in Canterbury.

Our thanks to the ASB Community Trust, the Auckland Council, West Wave Aquatic Center, TTCF, NZ Community Trust and our various commercial partners who have given generously to allow the sport to progress.

May I express my personal thanks to the Board of Auckland Swimming for their support. The journey we have undertaken has seen a lot of change and has carried many out of their comfort zones but I believe that we are better equipped today to continue facing the challenges of a complex future. This would not have been possible were it not for the leadership which our association has been afforded by the ASA Board. As they retire and seek new challenges I extend my personal thanks to both Andy Brown who has led with a pleasured equanimity, Dominic Toomey who has juggled the demands of a busy career and service on the Swimming New Zealand Board, and Julie-Ann Mold who balanced a difficult set of family health issues with her service as a Board member. The democratic process may possibly deliver other unknown changes to the Board and if it does then to those who retire, you do so with my certain personal thanks and best wishes.

Finally, may I thank others who have really made it all possible. Tonia Wheeler and her family have been real stars. I can still see Tonia’s look as I come up with yet another adaptation of our programme and ask “can we do this?”, to which she simply gets on with challenging our systems to find new boundaries. Most especially, my own family who have accommodated less of their father than they deserve and the domination of swimming in almost every aspect of their lives. Occasionally as we have dealt with some of the more troublesome times in the sport there has also been a personal price which they have paid, which of course should never be required of young athletes, but which they have accepted with good grace.

Brian Palmer Executive Officer
