Testimonial to Jack Lyons:

D. J. (Jack) Lyons – the coach of the only New Zealand swimmer to have held world long course (50m pool) swimming records died earlier this month (October) aged 94 years. His famous charge was Phillipa Gould who set 100m, 110yds, 200m and 220 yards world backstroke records during 1957 and 1958.

But Jack could claim many other “firsts” in the swimming world.

As a young man he was appointed pool manager of the Enfield Pool, Sydney’s first long course pool. Seven years later he became the Manager of the first long course pool in New Zealand – the Newmarket Olympic pool. During his 29 years in that position, that pool hosted the 1950 Empire Games, swimming, diving and water polo events.

As a coach, his diving squad could fill the Newmarket venue for their displays, while the four girls in the 1958 team to the Cardiff Empire Games were all trained by him - Phillipa Gould and Tessa Staveley winning medals. With these successes, he was in demand for lectures and as an examiner of coaches, when these were first introduced.

Finally, in 1969 he became the first Manager of the Swimarama Pool in Mt Wellington, a post he held for 15 years before, in his retirement, he was retained as a consultant and inspector.

In 1972 he was inducted as one of four Master Coaches by the then Professional Coaches Association.

He is survived by two sons Max and John.

Chairman’s Report

The Auckland Swimming Association (ASA) has had another busy year working towards the strategic objectives set by the board while working towards the goal of “Significant sport in Auckland by 2010”. Thank you to the board for all their time they have given Auckland Swimming over this past year.

This year has seen the introduction of Swimming New Zealand’s new structure of registration where non competitive and technical members do not pay a fee, club fees have been increased and swimmers fees are standardized nationwide. For the first time in many years Auckland Swimming’s income from fees has dropped significantly. Therefore it is important that we look to alternative revenue streams and ensure that our organisation becomes more and more business orientated to meet its financial needs.

Consultation with the clubs was held in the three regional zones. The meetings were well attended in the West and Central Zones but attendance in the Northern Zone was poor.

Marketing and Communication The completion of the ASA major project, the new colour screen scoreboard has been the highlight of the year in our endeavour to meet the strategic objectives of assisting our clubs to provide quality services and to provide first class swim meets. Currently a contract is being set up to generate income from the advertising and hire of this board. Clubs will have the opportunity to use the board during their swim meets and therefore gain sponsors through advertising. All users of the new score board must be trained through Swimming Auckland.

Clubs ASA has provided the opportunity for clubs to request assistance in the training of new committee members and for clubs to set up their strategic direction and systems. Only a small number of clubs have requested this assistance therefore this opportunity will be made available in the coming year. Templates for clubs have been compiled to assist clubs.

Facilities ASA continues to be active in promoting the needs of its members and the community to Councils. ASA has presented to North Shore , Auckland and Waitakere Councils advocating the need for further facilities for competition swimming and access for training.

ARPASS As a continuation of the ARPASS audit ASA was chosen to participate in the self audit. This process involved a strong critique of the organisation in a wide range of areas from systems to processes. While we scored well in most areas there is always room for improvement and we are now at the stage where we will be upgrading those areas that need improvement to reach the best practice model.

Swimmers The third key initiative has been to ensure ASA run first class meets. The first of the AOD teams have been trained. ASA continues to train good numbers of technical officials and the meets are managed by our ASA Championship Group.

Our swimmers have again excelled with many New Zealand Age and Open records being broken. Congratulations to those who have been selected for the 2008 Olympics. Auckland is proud of the fact that eleven of the twelve swimmers currently selected plus all the team staff are from Auckland.

(Chairman’s report cont….)

As Chairperson I have again attended the Swimming New Zealand Presidents /Chairpersons forum where it was pleasing to see many regions now requesting to use some of Auckland’s initiatives (eg the officials booklets and the reporting system).

Finally, a special thank you to Philippa Bouzaid, our executive officer, and to Tonia Wheeler, the office administrator, for their many hours of work they give to Swimming Auckland. Both give much more to Auckland Swimming than the positions to which they are employed and their dedication to this sport is greatly appreciated by the board.

Executive Officer’s Report

I don’t know whether its because I’m getting older but the years just seem to fly by so quickly. As I’ve started to put fingers to keys (no more pen to paper) I ponder on where the 2007 year has gone and how we fared as a region.

There were some very good swims throughout the year and the “bar” has certainly been raised over the course of the year with heated competition in the Mens 50m and 100m freestyle events; at the 2008 FINA World Short Course Champs attained an individual Gold in the 200m butterfly and a team effort by Daniel Bell, , and for a bronze in the 4 x100m medley relay; young 17 -18 year old swimmers stepping up to challenge our high performance swimmers; age group swimmers medaling at the Australian Age Group Championships; 165 NZ records falling by the wayside through Aucklanders’ efforts and 235 times Auckland records were broken during the year.

WOW, what a great sport!

We do put a lot of emphasis and recognition around our swimmers and rightfully so, they are the face of our sport and to the coaches that continually coach, encourage and mentor our swimmers to see what they can be rather than what they are. Congratulations on the year’s achievements. We look forward to August in Beijing......

"54

I am often somewhat amazed when I hear peoples perception of how great a region rates, is determined by the quality of swimmers they produce.

Swimming Auckland is so much more and I take this opportunity to share a few reasons why our region rates highly, if one takes away the swimmers……..

∑ Our officials’ booklets have provided an outstanding presence, not only for our members but for other regions and clubs. We are constantly being asked for copies of the booklets throughout the swimming fraternity. The process of recruitment of officials has once again toppled the target set for the year.

∑ Which leads me on to the newly developed “Examiner’s Kit” which has been designed to assist and equip our examiners to achieve the best possible outcome when evaluating members from Timekeepers to Referees.

∑ We have developed a “Club Structure” manual which is full of templates for clubs to use, whether you are starting new or renewing your start up, there are some great document templates in this kit like, constitution, employment agreements, guidelines for incorporated societies, job descriptions and more. A new initiative worth checking out!

∑ Live Results – we started in September, then it seemed to have hiccupped, but lately its “live” again. It is by no means the standard that I can accept for our members, but we are certainly on the right track with solving the ‘on again, off again’ situation. What we have found over the last couple of months is that the internet plays a huge part in making this successful and we are working with our website managers to reach the best possible solution. Hey, Rome wasn’t built in a day!!!!

∑ We not only have a scoreboard, we have an amazing LED Screen through the efforts of David Jack that created such positive feedback during the Olympic Trials. Did you see it? One minute we are watching the times tick over for the swimmers on the scoreboard, the next minute we have the commentators live action up on the Screen for all to see. Technology, hard to go without these days. The first region to acquire such an asset, we take pride in achieving that, but we can’t rest on our laurels, over the next couple of years Swimming Auckland will develop this asset into a revenue base to assist our region moving forward. But there is one thing you can be sure of - ‘we will entertain you’

(Executive Officer’s report cont….)

Our region is always evolving, it is very innovative and we strive to achieve best practice. Our region is very well balanced in all aspects and although there is constant room for improvement we need to be aware that without the people ‘behind the scenes” we would not be as successful a region as we truly are. Thanks to you all.

I extend my grateful appreciation to Tonia, Office Assistant, for her constant support, effort and laughter and who plays a major role in keeping the day to day operations ticking over. To the board members who constantly keep me on my toes, Competitive, Events, Technical and Technology Groups who strive to ensure that our swimmers are in the best possible environment to achieve and lastly but by no means the least, to the 6 wonderful volunteers who ran our Auckland Champs as well as the national events during the course of the year.

There was a special milestone in Swimming Auckland’s history during the year and that is the 25 years service that Norma Williams has given as Registrar of Swimming Auckland. Norma informed us that this was achieved over two periods in time. The first time Norma was Auckland’s Registrar was between 1965 and 1974 (9 years) and from 1992 to the present day (16 years) and still going strong. I take this opportunity on behalf of all the members of Swimming Auckland to acknowledge and congratulate Norma for her outstanding commitment and loyalty to our sport.

I started with the success of our swimmers and I’m going to end my report with them, as you have to agree, this photo of Liz Coster and is, as my sons would say, SHOT!!!
