BY COLIN THORSEN

Fifteen-year-old Hiko Neill is excited at the prospect of man-handling animals ten times his weight in open bull riding ranks next rodeo season. The Year 12 Te Awamutu College student capped a sen- sational 2009-10 season on the national circuit winning the second division bull ride title first year in the grade. At the annual prizegiving in Fielding, held after the final rodeo at Waimarino, Neill was also presented with the prized buckle as rookie bull riding champion. More importantly, the young tyro gained well in excess of the $2000 prize money needed to gain auto- matic entry into open bull ride in 2010-11. He in fact finished the second division bull riding competition with $2758, well clear of the minor placegetters Ramoan Neho $2285, Stuart de Ridder $1955 and Paddy Church $1910. Neill will go down in his- tory as one of the youngest riders to break into open bull ranks. Fred Doherty, editor of Rodeo News, says it is very rare for one so young to gain TC300310CA01 TC300310SP16 promotion into any of the JOB DONE: Te Hiko Neill winning the second division bull riding event at SPOILS: Riding event director, Steve Houston presents Te Hiko Neill rough stock events — bull Kihikihi to gain promotion to open ranks next season. with the prestigious rookie bull riding champion buckle. riding, horse bareback and saddle bronc events. and doesn’t get too far ahead of bury, is only 18 years of age. national rodeo finals at Australia in Queensland last bal sport. ‘‘Having said that, I think himself — he’s certainly been Neill showcased his skills Waimarino, ended in a rare The idea behind the High Many of these young team Te Hiko has come up through well coached and mentored.’’ representing New Zealand tied result — both New Zea- School Challenge is to keep the members (like Te Hiko Neill) the ranks pretty good.
