THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART 3 0620 00838895 0 CLASSICISM ANd ROMANTICISM FRENCH DRAWJNQS ANd PRJNTS PRJNTS ANd DRAwiNqs GAIIERJES SEpTEMbER 1^'N0VEIVlbER 1, 1970 TrIE METROpoliTAN MUSEUM of ART Classic and romantic currents and counter-currents enliven the richly productive first sixty years of nineteenth-century France. At first glance the "classicists" - David, Ingres, and Prud'hon - appear to be the stylistic archenemies of the "romantics" - Delacroix and G6ricault, but the present visual confrontation should make clear how much they had in common. The penetrating social critic Daumier stands somewhat apart, avant garde in his subject matter but harking back stylistically to the eighteenth century and above all to Fragonard. The major artists in this small exhibition were all first and fore most painters, but they were eminently talented draughtsmen and print makers as well. The development of lithography, a graphic process in vented in 1796 that allowed an artist to draw directly on a stone block from which his design could be printed, is splendidly accounted for in this exhibition. The drawings and prints in this exhibition have been chosen from the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and from several private collections in New York City. This checklist supplies the essential in formation; bibliographical references are limited to the standard and most recent publications, and in most cases these cite the full bibliography.
