Costa Anatomy Sector, Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, Rua Jardim Botänico, 1008 Jardim Botänico, Rio de Janeiro, RJ / CEP 22400-000, Brazil SUMMARY The wood anatomy of the species Anaueria brasiliensis Kosterm., Beilschmiedia emarginata (Meissn.) Kosterm., B. rigida (Mez) Kosterm. and B. taubertiana (Schw. et Mez) Kosterm. (Lauraceae) is described. The taxonomy and ecology of these species, important components of the Amazonian forest or Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil, are discussed as related to wood anatomy. The main anatomical differences are: presence, type, arrangement and location of inorganic inclusions and secretory cells, and the arrangement of the axial parenchyma. Key words: Wood anatomy,Anaueria. Beilschmiedia, Lauraceae, taxon omy, ecology. INTRODUCTION Anaueria Kosterm. is amonotypic genus, with the single speciesA. brasiliensis Kosterm. (Kostermans 1938; Van der Werff 1991).1t was once (1957) included in Beilschmiedia by Kostermans, but is anatomically closer to Mezilaurus Taubert (Rohwer 1993). The genus Beilschmiedia Nees consists of about 250 species and is found through out the tropics (Rohwer 1993); six species occur in the Atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil: Beilschmiedia angustifolia. B. emarginata. B. fluminensis. B. rigida. B. stricta and B. taubertiana. Three of these species were examined in this study. They were selected on the basis of availability of botanical material, whether fresh from the forest or through the exchange of wood sampies from collections in Brazil. Beilschmiedia rigida (Mez) Kosterm. and B. taubertiana (Schw. et Mez) Kosterm. are among the most important tree species at the Macae de Cima Munü;:ipal Ecological Reserve and the Parafso State Ecological Station (Relat6rio Tecnico do Programa Mata Atläntica do Jardim Botänico do Rio de Janeiro 1990). -

Smith ABSTRACT. Recent molecular studies have shown Tabebuia to be polyphyletic, thus necessitating taxonomic revision. These revisions are made here by resurrecting two genera to contain segregate clades of Tabebuia. Roseodendron Miranda consists of the two species with spathaceous calices of similar texture to the corolla. Handroanthus Mattos comprises the principally yellow flowered species with an indumentum of hairs covering the leaves and calyx. The species of Handroanthus are also characterized by having extremely dense wood containing copious quantities of lapachol. Tabebuia is restricted to those species with white to red or rarely yellow flowers and having an indumentum of stalked or sessile lepidote scales. Nonetheless, very few inventories have been carried out in areas where the flora is well documented, and records of galls from herbaria and sites outside the study area have seldom been utilized. In this study we provide a checklist of the native vascular plants of a 345 ha forest reserve in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica and document which of these plants were found to harbor galls. The gall surveys were carried out between November 2013 and December 2016. We also cross-checked our plant list with the previous gall records from elsewhere in the country and searched for galls on herbarium specimens of dicots reported from the reserve. In total, we recorded 143 families and 1174 plant species, of which 401 were hosts of galls. Plant hosts of galls were found in the following non-mutually exclusive categories: 209 in our field sampling, 257 from previous records, and 158 in herbarium specimens. -

I view Professor Abbott as an international leader in the areas of plant hybridization and phylogeography. His work is notable for its high quality, thoroughness, and careful and nuanced interpretations of results. Also, included in this nomination package is a letter of support from Corresponding Member Dianne Edwards CBE FRS, who is a Distinguished Research Professor at Cardiff University, along with Richard’s CV. Below I highlight several of Prof. Abbott’s most important contributions, as well as the characteristics of his work that I particularly admire. Prof. Abbott is probably best known for his careful elucidation of the reticulate history of Senecio (ragworts and groundsels) of the British Isles. His studies of the Senecio system have combined careful analyses of historical plant distribution records in the UK, with data from ecological experiments, developmental genetics, and population genetic and genomic analyses. This multidisciplinary approach is powerful, and Prof. Abbot’s work has revealed several examples of plant speciation in real time (and there aren’t very many of these). Key findings include (1) the discovery and careful documentation of the homoploid hybrid origin of the Oxford -

Our research group from the University of California, Berkeley and Texas A & M University, College Station has been researching the ecology of one pollinator group, the bees, in the northwest Guanacaste dry forest region since 1969. Much natural forest existed in this area when we first began the work. But, many land use changes have occurred over the years to present day to the point that it is difficult to find tracts of undisturbed forest suitable for field research, especially those not affected by wildfires, which are now common. Further, urban areas in the region continue to grow with increasing numbers of people populating the region. In this paper we provide an overview of our past bee-flower work for a historical perspective, and then weave in people that have now become an obvious ecological component of current bee-flower relationships. -

Califano, E. M. del Castillo, M. A. Quiroga & E. C. Lozano. 2009. Native and exo- tic species of Tabebuia and Handroanthus (Tecomeae, Bignoniaceae) in Argentina. Darwiniana 47(1): 185-220. The most recent studies about the genus Tabebuia and Handroanthus recognize two and six native species in Argentina, and one exotic cultivated species of Handroanthus in urban streets. Nevertheless, the genera are not completely understood, because some taxonomic conflicts are mentioned for the NW of Argentina (NWA). New collections made in Salta and Jujuy, and the revision of an important number of herbarium samples have confirmed a very high variability among the populations of the NWA region, and the subsistence of conflictive situations that prevented the correct identification of the species. Consequently, we considered it was necessary to make the revision of the genus analizing comprehensive material including all the phenological phases, in order to study most characters of every plant organ (young leaves, mature leaves, inflorescences, flowers, fruits and seeds). Our results indicate that the number of native taxa of Handroanthus is seven, including a new variety, and two of Tabebuia. Besides, another cultivated species of Tabebuia was identified, so there are two exotic taxa. -

In this chapter, we attempt to describe the major types of vegetation cover in this vast region as they occurred in pre- Columbian times and outline the conditions that support them. Examining the large-scale phytogeographic regions characterized by each major cover type (see Fig. I), we provide basic information on geology, geological history, topography, and climate; describe variants of physiognomy (vegetation structure) and geography; discuss transitions; and examine some floristic patterns and affinities within and among these regions.
