Our research group from the University of California, Berkeley and Texas A & M University, College Station has been researching the ecology of one pollinator group, the bees, in the northwest Guanacaste dry forest region since 1969. Much natural forest existed in this area when we first began the work. But, many land use changes have occurred over the years to present day to the point that it is difficult to find tracts of undisturbed forest suitable for field research, especially those not affected by wildfires, which are now common. Further, urban areas in the region continue to grow with increasing numbers of people populating the region. In this paper we provide an overview of our past bee-flower work for a historical perspective, and then weave in people that have now become an obvious ecological component of current bee-flower relationships. -

The most recent studies about the genus Tabebuia and Handroanthus recognize two and six native species in Argentina, and one exotic cultivated species of Handroanthus in urban streets. Nevertheless, the genera are not completely understood, because some taxonomic conflicts are mentioned for the NW of Argentina (NWA). New collections made in Salta and Jujuy, and the revision of an important number of herbarium samples have confirmed a very high variability among the populations of the NWA region, and the subsistence of conflictive situations that prevented the correct identification of the species. Consequently, we considered it was necessary to make the revision of the genus analizing comprehensive material including all the phenological phases, in order to study most characters of every plant organ (young leaves, mature leaves, inflorescences, flowers, fruits and seeds). Our results indicate that the number of native taxa of Handroanthus is seven, including a new variety, and two of Tabebuia. Besides, another cultivated species of Tabebuia was identified, so there are two exotic taxa. -

The conservation value of secondary forest is increased by its capacity to maintain ecosystem properties and provide services to humans; which has been hypothesized to have positive links to the species and functional diversity of ecosystems. However very little information is available on the occurrence of this relationship in secondary forests. This dissertation makes an important contribution to the ecological knowledge of secondary SDTF and describes changes in plant species and functional diversity by using a stratified design considering different successional stages along an environmental gradient in a region of the Caribbean coast of Colombia and a multi-trait approach to study functional diversity at three scales: species, communities and landscape. The analysis of the variation in functional traits of SDTF trees at the species level allowed me to support the hypothesis of coordination between leaves and stem traits. -

Nymphs and adults of Tingis americana Drake, 1922 were found feeding on leaves of Handroanthus heptaphyllus (Vell.) Mattos and Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Mart. ex A. DC.) Mattos in the Botanic Garden, Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This is the first record of T. americana on these host plants and in the southern Brazil. We aimed to compare the nymphal development on both hosts and to analyze the reproductive parameters on H. heptaphyllus (25 ± 1°C; 60 ± 10% RH; 16 h photophase). The mean nymphal period (days) was shorter in individuals reared on H. heptaphyllus (12.69 ± 0.076) than on H. chrysotrichus (19.11 ± 0.208) (P < 0.0001), however, nymph viability was similar. On H. heptaphyllus, the mean embryonic period lasted 12.32 ± 0.274 days and the egg viability was 92%. The mean total and daily fecundity were 310.0 ± 19.40 eggs/female and 7.46 ± 0.302 eggs/female/day, respectively. -

[email protected]; [email protected] Resumen Se estudiaron las Bignoniaceae de la ciudad de Mérida con el fin de realizar una clave de identificación usando caracteres vegetativos. Se encontraron 8 géneros y 12 especies, de las cuales 3 son trepadoras y 9 arbóreas, siendo Tabebuia aurea un nuevo reporte para Venezuela. Las especies se diferenciaron por el hábito, tipos de hojas compuestas, tricomas, venación, borde de las láminas y forma del pecíolo. Estas se asociaron en dos grupos, las de hojas pinnadas y las digitadas, el primero con los géneros Bignonia, Jacaranda, Podranea, Pyrostegia, Tecoma y Spathodea y el segundo conformado por Handroanthus y Tabebuia, los más comunes en la ciudad de Mérida. Palabras clave: Bignoniaceae, caracteres vegetativos, identificación, Mérida. Abstract The Bignoniaceae of Mérida was studied in order to make an identification key using only vegetative characters. It was found 8 genera and 12 species, 3 of them climbers and 9 arboreal. Tabebuia aurea is a new record for Venezuela. Species are separated by growth habit, type of compound leaves, trichomes, vein category, leaf margin, and petiole shape. Species were segregated into 2 groups, those of pinnate leaves and those palmate, the first on with Bignonia, Jacaranda, Podranea, Pyrostegia, Tecoma and Spathodea, the last one integrated by Handroanthus and Tabebuia, the most common in Mérida city. -

Recent phylogenetic studies placed nearly all Neotropical arboreal and shrubby spe- cies of the Bignoniaceae (excluding Jacaranda) in the Tabebuia alliance, a clade that includes all of the woody species in this family with palmately compound leaves. However, the taxa assigned to this clade have appeared in these studies as an unresolved trichotomy with Sparattosperma as its sister group. Considering the diversity and taxonomic significance of ovule morphogenesis in the extant angiosperms, this study aimed to contribute to the systematics of the Bignoniaceae by investigating ovule ontogeny in one representative of each clade of the Tabebuia alliance trichotomy: Crescentia cujete, Cybistax antisyphilitica, and Tabebuia roseoalba. Methodology. The analysis is based on light microscopy observations of microtome semiserial sections of ovaries and ovules at several stages of development. Pivotal results. The ovules are anatropous, unitegmic, and tenuinucellate and originate from trizonate ovule primordia.
