A Glimpse at the LGBTQ Community Contribution to the STEM Fields by Valerie Etienne- Leveille
A glimpse at the LGBTQ community contribution to the STEM fields by Valerie Etienne- Leveille The acronym STEM identifies career disciplines associated with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields. Research has shown that LGBTQ individuals are more likely to report limited STEM career opportunities than their non-LGBTQ peers and the research shows that many LGBTQ STEM professionals leave the STEM disciplines due to harassment and devaluation of their professional expertise by their colleagues (1). The active recruitment and development of underrepresented individuals in STEM-related fields will provide society increased access to innovative ideas and creative solutions to challenging problems that will benefit the world (2). In this article two contemporary science contributors are showcased: Nergis Mavalvala and Ben Barres. Nergis Mavalvala Nergis was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1968 (3). She was born to a Parsi family and was raised in Karachi City, Pakistan where she received her early education at the Convent of Jesus and Mary school (4). She moved in her teenage years to the United States, and she attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics and Astronomy in 1990. As an undergraduate student, she co- authored a paper with her Physics professor and mentor in the Physical Review B: Condensed Matter publication (5). Nergis earned her Ph. D in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1997. She pursued post-doctoral research at the California Institute of Technology before joining the Physics faculty at MIT in 2002 (6). In addition to publishing more than 120 scientific papers, Nergis is well-known for her research on the detection of gravitational waves in the cosmos (7). -
Nature As a Romantic Aspect in George Bowering's Poetry

As a result, the poet tries to show his view about outward nature as being concurrent and congruous stating his position in nature as well as his awareness of it. As a conclusion, Bowering opts to presents haunting pictures to keep himself one with nature and consequently keeping himself with Canada and through this close association between humans and nature a new spiritual insight is going to be reciprocally produced. Key words: Bowering, poetry, nature, love, poem. My Mazdayasni Zarathushtri Religion
My Mazdayasni Zarathushtri Religion Friends, This essay was written by a 15 years old student as a class assignment. The teacher had asked all her students to write about their individual religion. Full credit goes to the parents of the child who right from such an impressionable age inculculate faith and teach them to be faithful towards its own religion in which one is born. You may photocopy this essay and circulate it among all Zarathushtris. Firdosh K Sukhia My MAZDAYASNI ZARATHUSHTRI RELIGION By Farishte Parekh My Mazdayasni Zarathushtri religion was established thousands of years ago, may be over 15,000 years in recent history. From time immemorial certain highly evolved souls took incarnation on this planet earth. They were known as ‘MAGHAVS’ who laid down divine laws which were attributable to God and proclaimed them as ‘MAZDAYASNI DAEN’. The creator of the universe was termed: ‘MAZDA’. ‘YASNA’ means: Attuned to. And ‘DAEN’ is the word for Divine Laws (Religion). Thus the full connotation of the word ‘MAZDAYASNI’ is: Attuned to the Creator (Mazda). On studying the ancient history of Persia we learn that Maghavs were in existence even before the lost continent of Atlantis. Two of the three islands in which the continent of Atlantis was fragmented due to the shifting of earth’s north- south poles were called ‘ARYANA’ and ‘POSEIDION’. The Aryan and Poseidon civilizations were very advanced. Maghavs who inhabited these islands have preserved the occult knowledge of the Mazdayasni Daen for posterity which is, of course, esoteric. King Jamsheed, Shah Fareidoon of the PESHDADIAN dynasty; the immortal Kai Khshroo, Kai Lohrasp, Kai Vishtasp, Kai Kobad, Kai Kaus and all monarchs of the KAYANIAN dynasty belonged to the Maghav groups. -

LIGO and the MIT Kavli Institute A significant activity of the MIT Kavli Institute is its involvement in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational‐wave Observatory, or LIGO, an initiative supported by the National Science Foundation to develop and exploit instruments to make direct observations of gravitational radiation. The LIGO Laboratory is a collaborative effort between the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Caltech has primary responsibility for the Laboratory under the terms of the Cooperative Agreement, and MIT is supported by subaward from Caltech. MIT is active in a range of activities, detailed below: The operation and refinement of the present detectors The search of the data for gravitational waves The development of Advanced LIGO, the second generation of instruments to be installed in the LIGO infrastructure The development of future techniques for quantum measurement, with a focus on applications to interferometric gravitational wave detection The MIT LIGO Laboratory The MIT LIGO Laboratory consists of roughly 30 staff and visitors; for comparison, there are ~120 persons at Caltech, and ~50 at each of the Hanford and Livingston observatory sites. Kings, Priests and Gods on Sasanian Investiture Reliefs
Iranica Antiqua, vol. XLVIII, 2013 doi: 10.2143/IA.48.0.2184703 AND MAN CREATED GOD? KINGS, PRIESTS AND GODS ON SASANIAN INVESTITURE RELIEFS BY Bruno OVERLAET 1 (Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels / Ghent University) Abstract: An inscription on the Naqsh-i Rustam I rock relief identifies the two protagonists in the investiture scene as Ardashir I and Ahura Mazda. All investing authorities on the royal Sasanian reliefs are therefore commonly identified as Ahura Mazda. In view of conflicting historic information and unexplained varia- tions in the iconography of “Ahura Mazda”, a re-interpretation of the investiture reliefs is made. The inscription on Ahura Mazda’s horse at Naqsh-i Rustam appears to have been added at the end of Ardashir’s reign or early in Shapur I’s reign and the earliest reliefs are now considered to depict an investiture by a priest, instead of by Ahura Mazda. Once the inscription had been added to the Naqsh-i Rustam I rock relief, it changed from an investiture by a priest to one by a god, Ahura Mazda. Iconographic details that conflicted with this transformation (such as the barsum, attendant and possibly the “royal” tamga) were left out of the divine image in later representations of the investiture on horseback. The late Sasanian Taq-i Bustan III investiture on foot, up to now considered to be the investiture of Khusrow II by Ahura Mazda and Anahita, is equally interpreted as an investiture by clergy, in this case by representatives of the cults of these two gods, rather than by the gods themselves.
