The Committee hope that whatever part you are taking in our Festival you have an enjoyable and positive experience which enhances your skills and enthusiasm for the performing arts. Our ‘mission’, as a festival, is simply to encourage all amateur performers – whatever their age or proficiency. We aim to do this by providing them with a performance ‘platform’, a professional adjudicator and an audience. Audiences play an important role in the development of performers’ abilities, and while we are very glad to see members of the general public come and watch the sessions, we also hope that performers themselves (and their families & friends) stay to support those in the classes after them, and those performing on other days or in other sections. Festivals such as ours aspire to serve as an interesting and educational experience for the audience too; we hope you find this so, but please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve. While the Festival does everything it can to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone attending, we must emphasize that ultimate responsibility lies with each individual, or in the case of children, with their parents, guardians, teachers or carers. The Festival cannot be held responsible for any items lost, stolen or damaged while at a Festival event, including in the car parks: please do not leave any personal items or valuables -- this includes children! -- unattended at any time. We can accept no liability for any accidents of whatever type that might occur beyond the bounds stipulated by law. Our marksheets / certificates use the ‘Descriptors” specified by the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech: 90+ / Outstanding: “An exceptional performance, both technically and artistically” 87-89 / Distinction: “An excellent performance technically and artistically” 84-86 / Commended: “A convincing performance technically and artistically” 81-83 / Merit: “A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability” 78-80 / Moderate: “A performance showing development of technique and/or communication” 75-77 / Fair: “A performance limited in its communication” Once again arrangements have been made to hold the winners concert and prize-giving ceremony in the Main Hall of the Winter Gardens, Margate, on Tuesday 22nd March. We will ensure that the pace remains swift throughout the evening so that even the youngest prizewinners get a chance for their 15 seconds’ fame. There will be a small entry charge but plenty of free parking on the lower promenade with stairs and a wheelchair ramp to the Main Hall. Soft drinks, ices and bar refreshments will be available. Come along and make this evening something special for all of the performers, and enjoyable for yourself and your family & friends. The Festival is totally dependent on voluntary helpers, especially the Committee who work all the year round to ensure the smooth running of the various events: however we always need extra helpers, particularly in March when the Festival is taking place. Advice and feedback is always welcome, but offers of assistance are even more so! Please contact the Secretary or Chairman. Finally, we have discovered that many children who might otherwise like to take part in the Festival have not been able to do so, simply because their teachers are too busy with other things. There is no reason though why they should not enter independently – just for fun, as well as for the experience of performing to an independent assessor outside the exam system – and we hope that you will encourage them to do so. Anyone who wants to be put on our mailing list for next year’s Syllabus should give their details to the Secretary. 3 2005 THANET MUSIC AND DRAMA FESTIVAL TIMETABLE INSTRUMENTAL Keith Stent Friday 25th February Dane Court Grammar School, Broadstairs Saturday 26th February `` DANCE Geoff Lucas Saturday 5th March The Centre, Alpha Road, Birchington Sunday 6th March `` Saturday 12th March `` Sunday 13th March `` Saturday 19th March `` SPEECH AND DRAMA Annette Elliott Tuesday 9th March Pavilion on the Sands, Harbour St, Broadstairs Wednesday 10th March `` Thursday 11th March `` Friday 12th March `` PIANOFORTE Eileen Field Saturday 12th March Hartsdown Technology College, Margate VOCAL & CHORAL Betty Roe Thursday 17th March St Philips Church, Palm Bay, Cliftonville Friday 18th March `` Saturday 19th March `` PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE CONCERT AND PRIZEGIVING Tuesday 22nd March, 7.00 pm Winter Gardens, Margate Audiences are welcome at all events and their support and presence is greatly appreciated by the performers, particularly in classes where the entries are small. Everyone is also welcome to attend the Festival’s AGM, which will be held at the Baptist Church Hall, Queens Road, Broadstairs on Tuesday 17th May at 7.30 p.m. Even if you cannot spare the time to be actively involved in the running of the Festival, this is an ideal opportunity to have your say in how it is organized and suggest how it could be improved. A final thank-you to Mac Towe and his staff at the The Pavilion, everyone at the Winter Gardens and St Philip’s Church, the BVC Association for the use of their Centre and the Headteachers of Dane Court Grammar School and Hartsdown Technology College for kindly offering us the use of their facilities. 6 Adjudicators’ profiles INSTRUMENTAL: Keith Stent Hon.FTCL, GTCL, ARCM After early work in State and Royal Ballet schools, Keith Stent held many highlevel posts in music education, ranging from head of department in teacher training to advisory work for the extensive adult education music activities of the late Inner London Education Authority.
