When the rather austere Sister Ursula is appointed the new head of Nonnatus House, Sister Julienne finds herself demoted and working as an ordinary member of the staff . She is not the only one to face challenges . As they strive to help mothers cope with childbearing, disabilities, disease, and social prejudice, the midwives must make choices of their own . Sundays at 8 pm On The Crowd & the Cloud Hosted by former NASA Chief Scientist Waleed Abdalati, this series takes viewers on a global tour of the projects and people on the front lines of citizen science and crowdsourcing . By observing their environment, monitoring neighborhoods, and collecting information, citizens are helping professional scientists advance knowledge while speeding up new discoveries and innovations . Thursdays at 6 & 11 pm On Family Ingredients Get an introduction to interesting people and riveting stories linked by a family recipe, starting from a base in Hawaii to locations such as Japan and Puerto Rico . Find the rich and sometimes surprising connections to a treasured family dish . Learn why the most famous Hawaiian dish is the one that is most misunderstood; see how Okinawan soba is different from Japanese soba; and witness a family moment to remember and a dish never to forget in Tahiti . Thursdays at 11:30 am 3 Members’ Message SIGNS OF HOPE FOR PUBLIC MEDIA Mark Stanislawski Almost everywhere you turn, there are signs of division and disagreement across our great country, but at SOPTV we see signs of hope for public television . This small taxpayer investment pays real dividends, creating more than just high-quality television content — our shared mission is grounded in education, civic discourse, and community service . America’s public media system prepares children for school and raises the sights of adults every day in southern Oregon and northern California . It expands access to knowledge and opportunity for growth — over the air, via broadcast, on digital and mobile platforms, and in our community . According to our viewers, PBS KIDS is the most trusted and the safest place for children to watch television . Families see it as the best use of their kids’ screen time . In fact, a recent survey ranks PBS KIDS first among children’s TV networks in promoting school readiness, and parents credit PBS KIDS with their children showing more positive behavior . It makes a particular difference for children in low- income and rural communities who don’t have access to high-quality preschool . SOPTV is part of unifying Americans around culture, too . We’ve provided front- row seats to a behind-the-scenes making of “Hamilton” on Broadway, a guided tour of our planet, the stars and beyond, and immersive experiences of our nation’s history and heritage through award-winning documentaries . At a time when funding for music and arts within our schools is being cut, PBS provides access to the most sought-after performances for all Americans in every community — urban, suburban, and rural . The American people believe in federal funding for public broadcasting, and it’s a bipartisan fact . You don’t just have to take my word for it . One recent poll by the respected team of Hart Research (Democratic) and American Viewpoint (Republican) shows that more than 7 in 10 voters say public television is a good or excellent value for their tax dollars, on par with investments in highways, roads, and bridges . Eighty-three percent of all voters would tell Congress to look for cuts somewhere other than public television . In the context of the federal budget, funding for public broadcasting is a drop in the bucket, representing .01 percent of total expenditures . Yet this investment provides essential seed money for communities like ours, enabling us to produce programs like Immense Possibilities, which will broadcast nationally starting next month . In an age of increasing polarization, public media provides rare common ground for people who come from different backgrounds and have varying perspectives . If our leaders in Washington want to serve their constituents, they will act to protect this fundamental American institution and strengthen it for future generations . Mark Stanislawski President & CEO 4 — SOPTV’s Mission — As an independent media voice, Southern Oregon Public Television enriches our understanding of the past, enlivens our present and prepares us for the future by connecting our community with quality local and national programming that educates, enlightens, inspires and entertains.
