In the dozens of songs that Yoni composed, he created a wide variety of styles, incorporating numerous influences, from Sixties pop (mostly Beatles) to Jazz, Israeli to classical, east and west, into a fascinating personal statement. Rechter always composes with originality, great sensitivity to text, and for the best performers. He is considered the mark of quality and integrity in Israeli music. Yoni’s music is sophisticated and ever unexpected, constantly shifts tones and beats, and his classical piano training is evident. Many of his compositions have become staples of Israeli music, and one has on several occasions been voted the most popular Israeli song of all times. Yoni has worked closely with many of Israel’s top artists, including Arik Einstein, Gidi Gov, and Yehudit Ravitz. Perhaps his two most well-known collaborations are the legendary Kaveret group (a.k.a. Poogy), and Hakeves Ha-16 (The 16th Sheep), released in 1978 and still Israel’s most-popular album of children’s songs. A sought-after musical director, producer and arranger, Yoni has worked on numerous musicals, films, dance and albums. Rechter has also written classical music, and the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra performed a concert dedicated to his songs and compositions. Putumayo enthüllt um diese bekannteren Persönlichkei- ten herum nun weitere Gesichter. Da sind vielversprechende Newcomer genauso aufgeboten wie Tonkünstler mit Legendenstatus, verschrobene Eurovision Song Contest-Teilnehmer genau wie Experimentatoren zwischen den Kulturräumen. Und diese Vielfalt ist kein Konstrukt, sondern spiegelt nur den Staat Israel als Immigrantenland, eingebettet in eine flirrende Geographie am Kreuzungspunkt zwischen Europa, Afrika und Asien wider – mit jemenitischen, russischen, arabi- schen, asiatischen und äthiopischen Einflüssen. -

Rickel Senior Honors Project in Music The University of Akron July 24th, 2020 Around the World in 18 Songs An Honors Recital Elizabeth Rickel, soprano Jackson Carruthers, pianist A Note from the Vocalist At the beginning of my research, I began with a few Questions: What makes art and folk songs so important to their respective cultures? How are they similar to each other? How are they different? What is it about this kind of music that makes it so many, no matter the origin of the person or song? The motivation for this project is to shine light on some lesser-known folk songs, build upon my passion for music and language, and to illustrate the power of music, a universal language that we all understand, and in fact rather enjoy, and to illustrate the beauty when culture, language, and music are combined effectively. The goal at the end of my research was to have a full concert set that I can perform for any venue, particularly in schools, where I can talk to young musicians and broaden their horizons in the direction of world music. The songs for this concert were selected on the basis of various factors. Some of these songs were ones that I was already familiar with, either having heard them or performed them previously. Another factor was familiarity with the language, which ranged anywhere from speaking/performing in that language, a language with a similar root, and so on. That being said, I tried to go outside of my comfort zone and pick languages that I was not familiar with. -

1 C.V.7.2. Israeli Popular Music Edwin Seroussi In the early period of Israeli statehood, the means for the support of musical performance, composition, dissemination and education were in the mostly in the hands of governmental agencies and thus controlled by the dominant political and cultural elites. This control by the establishment gradually weakened, particularly following the decentralization of the mass media since the early 1980s. Popular music, a characteristic modern urban phenomenon, and its hallmark, the appeal to heterogenic populations, cosmopolitanism, industrial production and mass distribution in an open market, became then the main mode of music making and consumption in Israel as it did at a global level. From the 1920ies up to the present Popular music defined along these lines first appeared in Israel with the growth of large cities (Tel-Aviv-Jaffa, Haifa, Jerusalem) propelled by the immigration of professional musicians from Poland, Germany and the former Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late 1920s and early 1930s. These musicians developed in Israel new musical venues similar to those of the European cities, such as musical theaters and cabarets where contemporary European songs sung to new Hebrew texts were mixed with new compositions by local composers in genres such as the tango and the fox-trot. The popular music industry in Israel was launched in the mid-1930s when the first commercial record company was founded and a radio station opened in Palestine under the British Mandate that included Hebrew broadcasts. Up to the 1970s, popular music was dominated by tight state-controlled cultural policies and mass media. -

From the start, Yemen Blues created an original sound that became a new language in contemporary music. The intense musicians hail from NYC, Uruguay & Tel Aviv. This includes the core members of creation: Rony Iwryn, Itamar Doari & Shanir Blumenkranz. Today’s touring cast of Yemen Blues mainly based on Rony Iwryn, Shanir Blumenkranz & Ravid Kahalani with changing casts of top musicians & great friends from around the world. Each member comes from a different background and brings their own sound and arrangements to Ravid's compositions. The result of this amazing group is a powerful energy that mixes Yemenite, West African, Latin & Jazz influences and what Ravid likes to call "New Culture Music". The mambo and North African rhythms create a joyful and deep foundation, while the vocals remind the listener of ancient Arabic chants mixed with funk & blues. For their first album, the group collaborated with the well-known maestro Omer Avital who served as a musical director & producer. Since then, Yemen Blues keeps magic alive with a constant stream of new songs and their world-renowned exciting live performances!! Dubi Lenz, the well-known Israeli journalist, was the first to listen to Yemen Blues’ music. He immediately felt the power of the project while the band was still in its exploration phase. He helped to get Yemen Blues’ first who at the influential festival and expo - Babel Med - in Marseille, France. It was then that something truly incredible happened. The band received a hugely positive respond from people all over the world and the name “Yemen Blues” began to spread like wild fire. -

Mr. Cojocaru received his Master degree in Composition (with honors) at the "Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance" studying with Prof. Zvi Avni and Prof. Haim Permont. Mr. Cojocaru also attended Master courses under Composers Fabián Panisello (Spain), Philippe Leroux (France) , and Ivan Fedele (Italy). He Completed his Doctoral degree in composition (Ph.D.) at the Bar-Ilan University under supervision of Prof. Gideon Lewensohn, Prof. Betty Olivero and Prof. Michael Wolpe. Cojocaru has also received his Master degree in Orchestral Conducting (with honors), studying with Dr. Yevgeny Zirlin, and attended Master courses under Conductors Fabián Panisello (Spain) and Pierre Andre Valade (France). (from The Song of David , poem composed by a soldier on the Budapest outpost on the Suez Canal, 1973) From the post-1967 Euphoria to the 1973 Hysteria Unlike the relatively stable cease-fire agreements which followed the War of Independence and the 1956 Sinai Campaign, the 1967 Six Day War was followed by Egypt’s war of Attrition against Israel (1967-1970). This war consisted of sporadic yet constant military clashes along the cease- fire border by the Suez Canal, as well as guerrilla and terrorist activity on behalf of the different Palestinian organizations, which operated mainly from Jordan and the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The intermittent military and guerrilla activities continued until the next major war in October 1973, which is referred to in Israel as the Yom Kippur War,2 for the Jewish Day of Atonement. With the 1973 war, Israel was strategically surprised by a coordinated attack by Egypt and Syria from north and south.
