2011/12 President’s Message

Dear Forest Baseball Club,

What a wet year it’s been for Forest Baseball club and Baseball in general on the Northern Beaches. I cannot recall a season with more rainouts than this one just past. Despite that I think we have had another good year albeit shortened by both the weather and the Councils newly implemented mandatory rest periods for the grounds.

We are in our third year of ‘twilight teeball’ and this year was another fun and successful year for that program. It was once again a huge success with the participation rate very high throughout the 10 weeks. The true test will come next season when we see how many children make the transition to the Saturday competition. I am certainly hopeful that we have shown the kids how much fun teeball can be and that it will translate into many of them returning for the full summer season.

Our club numbers have been slowly rising over the past couple of years and we came close to pushing past the 200 member mark this year. We had just on 195 players (including teeball) in the junior club. I have noticed that a lot of our players are getting friends to come and join them at Forest and we seem to be attracting a lot of people from other sports such as Cricket. We should see our numbers maintain or grow next year as pretty much the entire club is eligible to return for another season. A bulk of the club members are in the 9-13 age group which bodes well for future growth and player retention.

Impressively, our senior ranks continue to grow and we had three mens teams register in the summer comp this year with another 3 likely to be formed for the winter comp. It is great to see more Dad’s coming out to play and experience the game and I encourage anyone interested to join up. It really is a great game to play at any age.

We have mostly completed the field and fencing projects begun over 2yrs ago and I think Aquatic is looking very much like a proper baseball complex. There are always things to improve and the committee has a few ideas on things we would like to see improved in the coming years.

I want to thank the committee for all of their efforts this year: Brian Murphy, Darren Morris, Tim & Anne Evans, Steve Molchanoff, Beth Murphy and Brian & Heidi Henry.

Also, a big thank you to the Coaches & Managers and parents who train, manage and support our kids. Without you it doesn’t happen. I want to make a special appeal to all of our members to get involved with the club and offer your time in some way. It’s so much easier to run a club when people are offering their help. If you have been with the club for a couple of years I’ll bet you are a baseball family. By getting involved with our club will

Club for the last 10 seasons. U/8 Dodgers

This year was learning curve for a lot of the kids as some boys it was there first time they played baseball.

So watching this team develop was a great highlight for me , we started off the season with only 7 kids which soon dropped to 6, but with some help from 3 keen boys from Friday twilight (Zach Caswell, Braden Ferguson, and Tia Addison) who filled in for a few games until we found some new boys to make up a full squad.

We soon found some rhythm and they improved every week with their fielding and batting and just getting to read the plays was a pleasure to watch.

I would like to thank all the parents for their support and help with all the duties, BBQ,s etc… and also Donna Riddiough our team manager.

Even though the weather was not favourable to us in the later part of the season all the boys had fun in all the games they played, as did I watching them.

Well done Dodgers

U8’s Mets

What a great season all the Mets had, from only a few little Mets actually knowing what was going on, to the last few games where everything flowed.

This is all thanks to our coach Gareth and his wife Erica. They both know so much about all aspects of the game, and were a great team, always patiently helping the team members (and sometimes their parents!). Without their guidance the Mets would have been organised chaos right to the end.

The team was:

Adam Castle – From the start it was clear that here is a boy that loves and knows the game. He always wanted to be there and has a strong grasp on the basics skills of the game. Hope you never lose the passion Adam!

Ben Hackney – Solid all round player in the field and at the plate.

Ben Maddox – A real pleasure to coach. Always tried his best and improved every week. Great work!

Jake Maddox – Jake won the coach’s encouragement award for his great attitude. Let’s hope he keeps enjoying the game for years to come. Well done Jake!

Laura Hosemans – Loved playing in every position. Tactical hitter.

Sam Hosemans – Always enthusiastic, always smiling, always happy to be there. Improved greatly throughout the season. Keep up the positive attitude!

Sebastian Elston – Obviously has absorbed a love and knowledge of the game by watching the game with his dad Gareth. Already a strong hitter and accurate thrower. Keep it up!

Tara Evans– Definitely the fastest runner on the team. Zipping between the bases is Tara’s strength. And well done for staying committed throughout a game by the end of the season.

Toby Morris –A good infielder, and consistent hitter.

Well done to all of you! Thanks for everyone’s part in making the U8 Mets such a great team!

Roslyn Harrison Manager U10’s Giants

This was one of those seasons which you chalk up to ‘building character’. The first season that the boys faced a Dean Gongolidis – Another ‘newbie’. Big Dean showed good moving ball is always a big adjustment, and what made it power for someone who had never played before. Even with even more challenging is that there are so many boys on the school sports mandatory commitments in the mornings, he Giants who have played very little or no baseball previously. would race to get the games and really enjoyed playing. So we look at a season like this for the ways the boys improved and for their character and spirit. I am very proud Tom James – Tom is getting the hang of baseball more and of this year’s Giants team for those reasons. If you more each season. This year he showed great improvement compared the skills level of our boys from the beginning of in consistently hitting the ball and his throwing. the season there was great improvement in hitting, throwing and fielding, and despite the frequent losses, the Hamish Kemmers – Hamish was one of our most reliable boys never lost heart. Turnouts for practice were always players. With a glove like glue, he was always adept at good. The boys showed up for the games each week with making the catch. And his hitting advanced by major strides renewed spirit and went out on the field and tried their best. this year too! That’s all you can ask as a coach. The improvements they made this year will go a long way towards many victories in Thomas Mountstephens – Our energizer Bunny, Thomas is the years ahead. Again I say, “I’m proud of you Giants”! always hustling. He made a crucial catch of a fly ball in our game against the Pirates, saving many runs with his effort. Thomas is a powerful hitter who doesn’t know the meaning Our wonderful group of players: of a weak swing at the ball. Nathan Butler – Like so many other of the Giants, Nathan hadn’t played any baseball previous to this season. Yet if you Max Reid – Max’s hitting improved dramatically this year as watched Nathan at the end of the season, his fielding, the season progressed. He was consistently hitting the ball throwing and batting showed great improvement from the the furthest of anyone on the team by the end of the beginning. season.

Robert Buttiglieri – In the running for the most improved Cameron Taylor – Our most reliable fielder, Cameron played player on the team, Robert’s fielding and throwing improved consistently well from season’s start to finish. When the ball by leaps and bounds over the season. is hit his way, you always feel confident he’ll make the catch!

Caden Crouch – Caden was playing with boys three years his Evan Thomas – Evan also made big strides on his baseball senior, yet you wouldn't know if from his playing skills. One of our most reliable fielders and hitters. skills this year. He had perhaps the hardest hit ball of the year in our game against the Giants, a smash down the third Noah-Pierre Dejean – Noah was brand new to baseball this base line. year, so moving right into ‘zooka’ ball was a big challenge. He came out to practice each week and showed amazing Greg Thomas improvement by season’s end. Coach U10’s Pirates

This was a major transition year for all the boys this year moving from Teeball to Zooka. Some picked it up fast and for Zach Murphy – Zach's fielding and confidence has improved some it just took just a little extra time. By the end of the this year, and he will do well next year in live ball. If there is season everybody was fielding and batting really well. As the ever a tight play you can always count on Zach to make a year went on the players worked hard on the basics of the beautiful slide. Well done on making the Manly rep team Zach. game and they really improved a lot. At this age group it is fantastic to see players actually start to understand the game Tian Rae – Always a strong fielder who understands the game and not be afraid of the ball. They all really want to get in the even at his young age. Great with the bat and already on his batter’s box and try to get a hit, steal a base and score a run so way to mastering switch hitting. Awesome job Tian. they can help their team win. It is so nice to see the boys having fun while they play and learn this great game. Jake Rattigan – Jake improved so much over the season. Started to have some big hits at the end of the year. Also loved Training for the season was always a fun thing and it was great the catching position, Well done Jake. that we had excellent attendance each week. Thank you to all Aidan Rodgers – Always ready to go, and hustles for parents for getting the boys there and assisting me when you everything, always with a smile on his face. Was a very could. consistent hitter at season’s end. Great year Aidan.

I would also like to thank all the parents for helping out Rory Brown – Rory always gives his best and improved so much throughout the season. It was again a real team effort from this over the year and we all saw fantastic results. Well done Rory. group by either scoring, umpiring, helping coach, organising the bench, warming up the players, doing the BBQ/canteen Ryan Moss – This was Ryan’s first year of baseball and he really duty or even just supporting the boys. U10’s Tigers

Well, we all had a great and enjoyable season. We just missed out Nathan Peddell – A good all-round fielder – making regular put- on the Semi’s. It was good to having 4 of the players from last outs year returning, 2 from a previous year and also to welcome the 5 in the field. When he connected with the ball, most hits were new players to the team – 3 having never players before. Those doubles. returning picked up from where they left off last year and improved even more. Those new to the team showed great Oliver Rand – Another reliable batter and fielder. Scored the development from the first game to the last one. third most number of runs for the season.

The challenge this year was to hit a live ball and for the catchers James Sherry – Also represented Manly in the U10 Zooka to learn the art of fielding these balls behind the plate. Came second in the batting averages and made the catching spot into his position for the season. I’ll call out all the players: Adam Greenwood – this was his first season of Zooka and the Ben Stuart – Reliable in the field. He made 2nd base his own for change from the first game to the last one was immense. the season. Towards the end of the season he would regularly get on base when at bat. And I cannot forget all the parents who made the season what it was, who provided help when asked – and even when not asked: Jack Gregory – this was also his first season, but with his golfing Kellie – our trusty manager, who handled all canteen rostering, background, found the switch to batting quite easy. He is always game rescheduling and many other trying tasks during the trying to improve his fielding, which showed in the number of season. outs made in the second half or the season. A great fielder (leading the every other week (or so it seemed); team in assists for the season) and a reliable batter – finishing equal second in averages. And all who helped in setting up the diamond, getting the benches and any other task needed for the game. I don’t think Jack Noakes – He was also new to the game of baseball. He any parent missed out in contributing. showed that he has a keen eye for batting and a good set of hands for fielding. I wish all players the best during the winter season and hope to see you all again in September. Matthew Norton – Another reliable batter and fielder. His most enjoyable part was the home run scored against the Dragons. John Rand Coach U11’s Braves

In a season where the U11 competition only had 5 teams all up and it was a score. The walk in the semi final after fouling off 2 or 3 pitches led to a miracle if we were able to play 3 weekends in a row due to the weather, the game winning rally from a near mercy rule loss. I hope to see you back next Braves had a good season. After a slow start, we were able to outlast 1 of year to continue the improvement. the teams in order to finish 4th and make the semi-finals where we won the first weekend in a comeback thriller but were bundled out due the rain in Rachel Hosemans - Her throwing and catching as well as her hitting have the second weekend of finals. Each and every player should be proud of improved out of sight, but most of all her keen eye for the strike zone got what was achieved in such a disjointed season. In fact, out of our 12 total her deep into the count and drew a lot of crucial walks. A walk in every games, 5 were played against the same team while only playing another plate appearance in the semi final gave a solid building block for the rest of once. This does not truly reflect the season and we definitely would have the line-up to go with. Congratulations on a fine season. won more than we lost if we were to play the other teams more. I am confident in saying that the depth of our team would have seen us outlast Thomas Coy - Tom's willingness to learn and his passion for the sport is both of the teams that finished above us and we would have come out on evident in his improvement. Tom ended the season as one of our strongest top as champions. hitters and was our usual closing pitcher. 4 hits in the finals, especially 2 in the late innings helped drive us towards that come-from-behind win. Each and every player played an integral part in the season. Also a MASSIVE THANKS to Tim Webster for being the without pitching more than an inning all year and with only a 1 run lead and team's manager this season. Thanks also to Jason Peddell for assisting with coaching duties in the absence of either Mike or myself. Thanks again this Christopher Stewart was my biggest surprise as I compiled this year to Keith Damant-Gallagher for being our scorer and report. In his second year of play he has done a remarkable job in statistician. And finally thanks to all of the remaining parents for improving his skills particularly with the bat. With an end of season your support and parenting such a fine group of young men. batting average of .692 he should be very proud of hi improvement and I hope he returns. As for our team, we had 12 returning team members and two new players. The two new players were… Nicholas Timson has been our first string 1st baseman for the last Campbell Hays who grew in to a solid catcher by years end and had couple of years and continues to show promise. He saved his best a very solid batting average of .474. As soon as I can help to work for the last game of the season with a couple of very strong hits. He the cricket out of his batting swing he will improve even further and ended the season with a .571 batting average and also helped us we will give him a go at pitching next year as well. out as a pitcher on a couple of occasions.

Riley O’Toole was our second newcomer who ended the season Josh Stapleton returned for his second season this year and really with a couple of solid hits. Riley was also voted the teams Most improved over last season all around. He had at least one dramatic Improved Player in a very close contest which had Campbell, and catch during the season as he played in the outfield mostly and Mathew in the running. ended the season with a .438 batting average

As for our 12 returning players, let me start off with the most Robbie Kolbe also returned this season as our returning catcher. dedicated member of our team to the sport of baseball first... Robbie had a great season in the position with a dramatic throw out Jonah Conway had an outstanding year as our leadoff batter hitting at 3rd base in our last game. His hitting has improved year on year .480 and making some key catches throughout the season. Jonah and maintained a batting average of .364 for the season. also tried out for the Rep team and made it as an alternate before being called up to play. If everyone had Jonah’s enthusiasm for the Harrison Henry takes the batting crown for this season with a sport we would have been in the grand final for sure. I look forward batting average of .789 or 15 hits in 19 at bats. It was always very to coaching him for many years to come. comforting to know that he was up next in the batting line-up. Harrison also has a very strong arm so it is equally comforting to Mitchell Cotie has been a key member of the team for years now have him play most any position. and could be considered the old man of the team. While he is small in stature and thus led the team in walks (7) he also has a forceful Malik Bloul is our last player, but certainly not our least. In fact he swing that enabled him to contribute with a .526 batting average. was our runaway Most Valuable Player eclipsing the voting. Malik was our best pitcher this year and is an all-around natural in the Zachary Zedack had a brief respite from the team before returning sport. He also was one of our strongest hitters and coupled with his to the roster (Coach/Dad could not have been happier). He had a quickness managed a batting average of .667 with 4 home runs. We very commendable season with a highly respectable batting average were a better team when he played. of .667 with 1 home run. He was also one of the most focused players always backing up every play from his normal position at SS. Looking forward to a better, less rainy season next year.

Luke Damant-Gallagher had another incredible season and was in Scott Zedach contention for our MVP award again this year. He helped the team Coach out in both pitching and as our first string 3rd baseman. U12’s Royals

This year’s crop of Royals saw a wide spectrum of baseball ability. We had several brand new players but most of the team were returning players from previous years. The team was not short on athletic ability and I consistently saw sparks of great ability from everyone both in the field and in the batter’s box.

The rain certainly didn’t do us any favours making it very difficult to get into a team rhythm that is so important. Many of our games were very close and I don’t think the 3-10 record really does the team justice. The fight and spirit the team showed throughout the year was commendable and when the team was on they were really on. I recall a game against the Pittwater Dolphins that we won 12-2. Everyone turned up that day to play and simply dominated a pretty good opposition team. From pitching to fielding to batting, it all worked. Key defensive plays were made and the opposition never had a chance to get into the game.

We had a big squad this year, 14 players. That is a tough roster to juggle with anywhere from 3-5 players off every inning (if everyone is at the game). The team stayed competitive during the year even though we had our moments of complete meltdown. I think that’s good for a team to experience both so they know what they’re capable of.

We spent much of our practices devoted to skills and drills, although we also played a lot of 500. By the end of the season I could see the work paying off with players like Louie, Jack, Conrad and Luke all throwing the ball much harder and further. Every team has one or two players that are the thinkers. Nick and Aidan W. certainly filled that role, always asking why and often being the first to answer a question I would ask about a play.

Our was pretty solid this year with no less than 5 players who I could put on the mound. Lachlan G., Liam, Nick, Charlie and Lachlan B. all had time on the mound and each had some memorable moments. Both Lachlans and Nick hadn’t pitched much before and rose to the challenge. They were all playmakers and each got more than a few strike outs during the season.

Finally we had some great utility players who I was comfortable putting just about anywhere on the field. Aidan R., Mack, Zack, Ryan and Liam could be relied upon to fill any spot in the field. All had a go behind the plate at one point or another during the season as well toughing it out as catchers.

A special thank you to our team Manager: Peter Juchau, Umpire: Rod Anderson and Scorers: Peter Harding & David Stanbury. To all the parents that came to practices and helped me keep the peace, Thank You. Lastly, to everyone that came to the games and cheered us on, Thank You!

Travis - Has had a good year on defence, a swing to die for and one of the best on base percentages on the team Travis should Riley - One of the team leaders, Riley had a good year and learnt be on a Rep team somewhere in the future a lot about catching and how to control the game from that position, has a great attitude and has potential to do well for a Cody - Is a very quick fielder, Cody has a lovely swing and a very long time in this game good eye at the plate which leads to a good on base percentage will be a team leader next year Rory - A surprise package Rory has played very well in the middle of the infield and has had a good year with the bat and a good on Jake - A team leader in all aspects of the game , Jake played well base percentage wherever he played and made several key plays on defence and had some good hits Jaylin - Our one Rep player, always keen to play and learn, a good team leader and the one player to consistently beat the coach to Jack - Our one lefty ,jack played well wherever he was on the the park shows great potential in all aspects of the game field was also one of our better hiters during the year and had a great on base percentage looking forward to having jack on the Jackson - For a 1st year player Jackson has shown a lot of team team next year as he shows alot of potential spirit and played very well at first base and probably had the longest hit of the year for the White Sox. Brad - A player very happy to be with the team, Brad dissects everything at practice and will be a good coach in the future Brad Dane - A very keen player who when switched on plays very well, also had one of the team’s best on base percentages Dane plays a lot better in the infield and has improved his skill level should be a team leader next year Michael - our reluctant pitcher, Michael will be on a Rep team in the future as he has shown this year he is full of potential from his fielding, pitching and hitting Michael is the complete package

Stay Loose Charlie U16’s Rangers

The 2011/12 season has been a very disruptive season with wet weather, injuries, representative restrictions and players moving out of the area.

At the end of December the Rangers where running last on the table and looking at an early end to the season. After the Christmas break the boys started to play some good baseball and finished 3rd on the table.

At the time of this report we have a preliminary final coming up to see if they could win our way into a grand final.

This team continues to amaze me with the effort and commitment that each player gives every week regardless of the results. I thank every player for a wonderful season and look forward to you all returning next season.

I would like to thank Jane Jewell our manager and scorer for another wonderful season, all the parents, who have helped out with canteen, pitch counting and coaching etc. I would also like to give special thanks to Yoney who helped with umpiring and at training sessions.
