elcome to another season of competitive and quality amateur baseball in the historic Chippewa River Baseball League. We are proud to say that 2016 amounts to the 88th season of baseball in the CRBL over a 108-year period of time dating back to the summer of 1908. It is remarkable to consider that an estimated 12,100W individuals have played in the CRBL over this long, storied, and documented existence. Humbly stated, very few if any baseball organizations – amateur or professional – across the United States can substantiate such a strong and rich place in America’s pastime as the Chippewa River Baseball League.

2015 saw the Whitehall Wolves beat the Tilden Tigers 4-2 in a well-played and entertaining CRBL championship game at Whitehall. To get to that point, both teams survived Wildcard Wednesday -- Whitehall by downing Osseo and the powerful arm of lefty Jake Peterson 7-0, while Tilden got past the Bears 10-9 in a crazy, back and forth 10 inning game.

Congrats to the Wolves in winning their 3rd CRBL championship (2016, 2013, 2012) and continuing to deepen their mark as one of the most dynamic and explosive squads in recent CRBL memory.

Alas, for all the great teams, players, and talent evident in the CRBL, 2015 frustratingly marked the fourth (!) WBA tournament in a row that no CRBL team has made it to the Final 8. Amazingly, this is the longest Final 8 drought the CRBL has experienced since 1949 to 1952. It should be noted that the WBA began in 1949.

2015 CRBL Championship Game Facts

• Saturday, August 1st, 1 pm at Whitehall, Tilden vs. Whitehall.

• The Tigers and Wolves last met in the championship game back in 2011 at Tilden, where Tilden prevailed 4-3 in 10 innings. That was the last time Tilden appeared in a championship game, while Whitehall went on to win the CRBL championship in 2012 and 2013.

• In total, this will be Whitehall’s fourth league championship game appearance.

• Widely considered to be the flagship program of the CRBL, Tilden will be making its 35th appearance in the CRBL championship game, a league record. The Tigers have won 17 CRBL championships, also a league record.

• In 2014, the Eau Claire Bears beat the Osseo Merchants 9-3 at Jon Soiney Field in Osseo. Pitcher Hayden Bowe was named game MVP for his relief efforts in the win, throwing the last 6 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned runs, walking 4, and striking out 4.

2015 Noteworthy Performances and Milestones

• There were two no-hitters thrown this season. The first came on June 24th when Jake Peterson, Luke Eide, and Logan Boettcher of Osseo no-hit Augusta 10-0 in 8 innings. That marked the eighth combo no-hitter in CRBL history. The second in 2015 came on July 12th when Ben Poppe of Cadott no-hit Augusta 10-0 in 5 innings . Respectively, these marked the 52nd and 53rd no-hitters in CRBL history.

• With his league leading 23 stolen bases this year, Whitehall’s Tyler Manley went over the century mark in steals with 107. Also joining that club was Eau Claire’s Reed Pecha, who swiped 12 bags to bring his career total to 102. Respectively, they are the sixth and seventh players to surpass 100 stolen bases in their league careers. The all-time leader is current Eau Claire Cavalier manager Matt Miller, who has 140 steals from his CRBL playing days.

2 • Bloomer legend Scott Stuckert became the 2nd player in CRBL history to go over 500 games played in his career, having now played in 501. The all-time leader in that category is current Jim Falls Sturgeon and CRBL icon Keith Pitsch -- Keith has played in 503 CRBL games.

• Chippewa Falls Lumberjacks stalwart Chuck Hall became the first player in CRBL history to cross the 1,600 at-bat barrier. With 11 at-bats in 2015, Chuck continues to add to his all-time leading total, which currently sits at 1,604 at-bats.

• With 9 knocks this year, Scott Stuckert’s all-time CRBL hit record is now at 548. In second place is Chuck Hall with 510.

• With 1 triple in 2015, Eau Claire’s Brian Menard now has 13 career three-baggers, second only to the 14 laced by CRBL Hall of Famer and Jim Falls great Roger Bergeron.

• Beef River slugger Todd lasher hit 4 home runs this year, moving his career total to 55, good for fourth place all-time. Tilden’s Randy Baier has the most long balls in CRBL history with 83.

• When Tilden’s Mitch LaVelle hit for the cycle on July 24 in an 11-2 win vs. Stanley, he became the sixth player in league history to do so and the first since fellow Tigers Randy Baier and Mitch Steinmetz each did it in 1992 vs. Hallie in a 31-8 victory. The other members of the exclusive cycle club are Jim Pevan of the Jim Falls Sturgeons (1986), Dave Guite of the Lafayette Indians (1978), and Rog Popple of the Chippewa Falls Triangle Sports (1960).

• By not allowing a run in 23.2 innings this year, Eau Claire’ Matt Lunde set a single-season league record for ERA. The old mark was held by fellow Bear Matt Olso, who did not allow an earned run in 21 innings pitched in 2006. All-time, Lunde is in third place in ERA with a mark of 2.33 in 632.2 innings pitched. The all-time leader is Eau Claire Bear Jon Huth who holds a career ERA of 1.67 in 254 innings.

3 2016 Eau Claire Bears ating back to the mid-way point of the 2014 season, the Bears have won an impressive 33 of 35 league games, but the end of the 2015 season came too quick as the Bears fell in walk off fashion in 10 innings to Tilden in the CRBL Wild Card Round, and then lost in similar fashion in the first round of the DWBA Playoffs leaving a bitter taste of “what could have been” in the mouths of Bears players. The 2016 Eau Claire Bears look to build off of what was one of the most impressive regular seasons in Bears’ history. The 2015 Bears tied the league record for wins in a season (20), and also set team records in runs (206), RBI (178), average (.375) and on-base % (.464). Many individuals also had impressive regular seasons. Matt Lunde’s 0.00 ERA tied former Bear, Matt Olson for the CRBL single season record. Mitch DeGrasse’s three saves set a new team record, while Chevy Tollefson’s 6-0 (1.000 win %) win/loss record ties him for the best win percentage in a season. Offensively, Palmer Buss finished with 28 RBI setting a new team single season record.

As far as Awards go, Sam Janni (Catcher), Jake Lindberg (3rd Base), Palmer Buss (Outfield) each earned their first All-League award. Brian Menard (1st Base) and Matt Lunde (Pitcher) each earned their seventh as they move to seventh place all time in All-League awards earned in CRBL history. Jim Thill (Shortstop) earned his fifth All-League award and first at Shortstop as his previous awards were all earned at 2nd Base. Forest Mazzei earned All-League Honorable Mention (Pitcher). Manager Reed Pecha earned Manager of the Year.

The Bears return a majority of the team from the 2015 season. The pitching staff will be anchored by Tollefson, Lunde, DeGrasse, Jordan Dickerson and Dominic Berlin, all of whom are looking to provide quality innings for the Bears.

The Bears are looking forward to building upon the successful season of 2015 and hope the post season is one to remember. 2016 Jim Falls Sturgeons n 2015, the Sturgeons’ motto seemed to be, “If not for us, who would the evil eye look at?” From the moment ace pitcher Cody Bunkelman went down with a season ending injury two thirds of an inning into the season, Sturgeon Ifortunes flowed south faster than the Chippewa River in April. Despite a number of solid individual seasons, the wins were as scarce as left-handed shortstops. Almost. Without Bunkelman, the Sturgeons were forced to insert position players into the mound slot, which also affected the defensive alignments. While hoping for a return of their ace to health, new manager Matt Nelson is looking to the development of Justin Martell who spent most of 2015 on the Legion squad. Nelson recorded the best performance lf the year for Jim Falls with a nine-inning shutout win over Hallie as part of a 3.156 ERA in five games. The team also may call upon Darrin Gullickson (4.050 with one save), Cole Zwiefelhofer (5.704), Matt Selz, and Bob Maurer for innings barring a callup from its minor league team in Cobban to bridge a gap.

Offensively, Ben Pitsch led in RBI (20) and hit .406 (28-82), despite the pressures of managing. Matt Selz hit .465 (20-47, 10 RBI) before a move out of state cut his season short, and the Sturgeons are counting on his return. Meanwhile, Lee Balsiger pounded out a .396 (21- 53) average, Zwiefelhofer swatted .324 (22-68 with the team’s lone HR and 12 runs scored), Gullickson chipped in at .282 (20-71), and Maurer finished at .273 (18-66, 12 runs). Nelson will count on bounce back seasons from himself and other players to further bolster the attack.

2016 Cadott Red Sox his will be the sixth year back in the CRBL for the Cadott Red Sox Baseball Team. The squad will again be Tmanaged by Ken Poppe. The team has struggled to win games in the first five years of existence. Last year the squad won six games, but was very competetive in a lot of games that ended in a close loss.

The team now has a nucleus of players that have some experience in the always tough CRBL, and knows what it takes to have a winning season.

46 A Brief Bio of 2016 CRBL Hall of Fame Inductee Jon Soiney

on grew up playing High School baseball in named Jon Soiney Field in 2015. The first game was Lanesboro Minnesota. After High School, played on the new field on April 21, 2001. Jon took he played for the local amateur team in over as groundskeeper that summer and has been the Jthe Lanesboro area. He was drafted by the backbone in developing a playing surface second to Independent League (similar to A-Ball of today) in St none in the area. He has attended numerous seminars Paul Minnesota. Pursuing a job at Presto Industries, and talked with pro baseball groundskeepers to hone Jon moved to EauClaire in 1967 and played fast-pitch his skills. In recent years Jon has traveled with the softball in the EauClaire and Osseo area for over 20 Milwaukee Brewers head groundskeeper, Michael years. Unfortunately, in what has become an extremely annoying pattern, the ‘Jacks were bumped in the first round of the WBA, this time by the score of 4-0 by the LaCrescent (MN) Cardinals and their ace pitcher draftee Tony Mueller of the LaCrosse 35ers. Individually, diminutive righty Tyler Gray was recognized with his record tying 5th Honorable Mention All-CRBL award. In compiling a 2.58 ERA within 69.2 innings (2nd in league play), “TGray” led the CRBL in wins with 7 while also batting .353 (18 for 51). From the batter’s box, a nod should also go to Big Travis Tomaszewski for leading the team with 2 league homeruns as well as Zach Parr, otherwise known as “Z”, for his breakout CRBL season in pacing the team in RBI’s with 20. As Father Time impatiently taps his watch, 2016 will see many familiar faces donning the green and grey as well as a few promising grasshoppers. Returning to the diamonds of the CRBL for another season of skirmishes will be grizzled and leathery veterans such as Josh Briggs, Dustin Cota, Tyler Gray, Chuck Hall, Terry McCann, Jeff Moessner, Andy Niese, Dave Roubal, Hans Soukup, and Chad Zutter. Joining them will be a group of much younger and spritelier veterans including Shawn Held, Emery Hull, Brett Jensen, Jake Krier, Aaron Milkert, Austin Neu, Zach Parr, Sawyer Sturz, and Travis Tomaszewski. Additionally, the men of trees and axes are excited to welcome a promising rookie class, highlighted by McDonell grad James Davis and Immanuel Lutheran alum Aaron Froelich. Offensively in 2016, the Lumberjacks will rely on virtually the same balanced line-up that enabled them to hit .318 in the CRBL last year (213 for 669), good for second among the league’s 12 teams. On the 2016 hill, the ‘Jacks are optimistic in the depth they will possess to navigate the demanding CRBL calendar. 50 2016 Osseo Merchants he 2016 Osseo Merchants will look to continue to build on recent success in CRBL play. In each of the past two seasons, the Merchants have recorded the best seasons in franchise history, finishing 17-5 in each of Tthe past two seasons. In 2016, the Merchants will return a stable foundation of veteran players. Jesse Brockman (.429, 6 2B) and Ryan Freitag, (.413, 4 HRs) will again lead the offense, with DH/Manager Garrett Nix (.306, 3 HRs, 35 RBIs) providing a sporadic spark. Defensively, the Merchants will rely on young infielders Sam Waters (.355, 18 RBIs) and Zach Slowiak (.275, 16 RBIs) to control the middle, while veteran first baseman Joe Zawacki will continue to reel in everything that is thrown his way.

On the mound, the Merchants will rely on unanimous All-CRBL pitcher Jake Peterson (4-1, .50 ERA, 56Ks in 36 IP) to anchor the rotation. Logan Boettcher (3-1, 2.46 ERA) and UW-Stout pitcher, Luke Eide (2-1, 4.50 ERA), will provide a solid 2-3 punch to complete the rotation. he Whitehall Wolves look to defend their 2015 CRBL championship and get to the WBA state tournament for the first time. The Wolves will once again rely on pitching and defense as their strength. The pitching T staff will once again be led by the strong arms of our veterans Alex Byom, Kyle Pronschinske, and Tim Vondrasek. Our younger pitchers like Sam Ferguson, Sawyer Bawek, and Troy Sharpe proved last year that they could get hitters out and also played a pivotal role in our team’s success. They will need to do this again in the always tough Southern Division of the CRBL. The defense behind these pitchers is led by our veteran shortstop Tyler Manley and third baseman Scott Hovell on the left side of the infield and our right side of the infield led by Alex Petroski at second base and Kyle Pronschinske at first base. The Wolves speedy outfield is led by centerfielder Drew Pronschinske. In right field we have the strong arm and speed of Trent VonDrasek that keeps many balls from dropping to the outfield grass. The always steady Brad Schank is in left field and he is extremely versatile and can play anywhere on the field. Max Ferguson handles the catching duties and is a big part of holding down opposing team’s running game. You have to score runs to win titles as well and in the offensive department the Wolves are led by Scott Hovell, Tyler Manley, Drew Pronschinske, Max Ferguson, and Kyle Pronschinske. The Wolves are also looking for contributions from, Josh Jenkins, Nate Pronschinske, Zak Pronschinske, and Sam Schweisthal as well during the 2016 season.
