Gazi Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (GNRP) Center First Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Center of Turkey œ Gazi Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (GNRP) Center has been founded by Biophysics Department of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in Ankara on July, 22, 2005. Among the duties of the center are; ∑ Making researches about health effects of EMF. ∑ Measuring levels of EMF (5 Hz œ 60 GHz) and interpreting measured EMF levels with respect to known health effects along with international & national standards ∑ EMF consultancy ∑ More than 30 measurements and their reports related to occupational exposure, base stations and High Power Lines are given to individuals and companies upon request.

GENERAL RESEARCH ACTĞVĞTĞES RELATED TO EM F HEALTH ISSUES

Activities of Gazi University Biophysics Department of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine is going on to be the leader on the studies of biological and health effects of EMF and standards. Among the studies of Gazi Biophysics can be listed as: ∑ Gazi Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Center ∑ Experimental ELF & RF System ∑ On-Going ELF & RF Researches ∑ Cooperated studies with Telecommunication Authority, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Environment and Forestry. ∑ Draft regulation prepared by GNRP Center with the title of —Public Concern and Health Protection of Electromagnetic Fields produced by Non-Ionizing Radiation —was submitted to Republic of Turkey Ministry of Environment and Forestry on April, 18th, 2006. It will be presented to Turkish Parliament in 1 or 1.5 months after evaluation of the Presidency of Strategy Development of Ministry of Environment and Forestry. ∑ Experimental Radio Frequency System is constructed and is being used in animal studies for analyzing several biochemical parameters such as oxidative stress, antioxidants, natural killer cell activity, tissue levels of hydroxyproline etc. Effects of RFR on permeability of Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) in rats was started as another research topic for a PhD thesis. ∑ Gazi Biophysics completed an epidemiologic study on children mobile phone users. The article entitled as — The Prevalence of Cellular Phone Usage in Turkish Secondary and High School Students “ published in European Biology and Bioelectromagnetics. ∑ Gazi Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Center is going to prepare brochures / information sheets about ELF and RF exposure of children / general public / workers. ∑ Gazi Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Center web site has been activated. We have announced our measurement and counseling procedures. We‘re preparing new web pages to give some EMF topics such as RF and ELF EMF radiation sources, studies done about RF and ELF radiation protection ∑ Base stations and high power lines are still an issue of public concern. People don‘t want base stations near their houses. Cases are being increased on the subject. ∑ Staff of GNRP center gets around to answering questions, telephones, e-mails on EMF and preparing expert reports related to EMF cases upon request from the courts. ∑ High Power Lines are started to taken under ground in Ankara.

Studies done at Turkish Standards Institution (TSE) on Non-Ionizing Radiation ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as —TS EN 50392 Generic standard to demonstrate the compliance of electronic and electrical apparatus with the basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (0 Hz - 300 GHz)“ accepted on December, 12, 2004. ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as —TS EN 50360 Product standard to demonstrate the compliance of mobile phones with the basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (300 MHz-3 GHz)“ accepted on March, 26, 2003. ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as —TS EN 50371 Generic standard to demonstrate the compliance of low power electronic and electrical apparatus with the basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (10 MHz - 300 GHz) - General public —accepted on November, 11, 2002. ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as —TS ENV 50166-1 Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields œ Low Frequency (0 Hz to 10 kHz)“ accepted on April, 04, 1996. ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as —TS EN 50361 Basic standards for the measurement of Specific Absorption Rate related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields from mobile phones (300 MHz - 3 GHz)“ accepted on November, 29, 2001. ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as —TS EN 50383 Basic standard for the calculation and measurement of electromagnetic field strength and SAR related to human exposure from radio base stations and fixed terminal stations for wireless telecommunication systems (110 MHz - 40 GHz)“ accepted on November, 11, 2002. ∑ TSE standard in force entitled as “TS EN 50364 Limitation of human exposure to electromagnetic fields from devices operating in the frequency range 0 Hz to 10 GHz, used in Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and similar applications“ accepted on April, 8, 2004. There are some more draft works on standards that is circulating for comment to expert technical committees for approval.

Activities of Other Universities ∑ University (Istanbul) Cerrahpaİa Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biophysics is also studying biological effects of electromagnetic radiation such as the permeability of blood brain barrier, Cumhuriyet University (Sivas) Faculty of Medicine Department of Physiology has started such a study. ∑ (DiyarbakÛr) Faculty of Medicine Department of Biophysics is also making researches related to health effects of EMF. ∑ 19 MayÛs University (Samsun) Faculty of Medicine Department of Biophysics and Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Biophysics has completed an epidemiological study about children mobile phone users

M ISSING LEGISTLATIONS ON NON-IONIZING RADIATION PROTECTION

∑ Still no standard for 0 œ 10 kHz and 60 GHz œ 300 GHz frequency ranges. ∑ No occupational exposure standard for 10 kHz œ 60 GHz frequency range. GNRP is preparing a regulation and going to start meeting with Ministry of Labour
