The hot, sunny days of summer are gorgeous, and the awakening beauties of spring are truly lovely. Winter is its own thing, so much splendour and that first snowfall is magical but sometimes we tire of clearing snow and ice. Most Gaspe- sians, however, state that their favourite season is fall. The crisp days of sunshine followed by the cooler evenings provide a lovely time for walks and enjoying the changing colours of the leaves. For those who love the flavour – pumpkin spice lattes are back! Test your knowledge about fall, or as the British (and some Canadi- ans) call it autumn. 1. There are 5 spices that combine to make pumpkin spice flavour – and no, not one of them is pumpkin. Can you name them? 2. What makes the leaves of some maples red? 3. What causes fall? 4. On average, leaves are turning colour about five days later than they did just over 20 years ago. Perhaps you have noticed this subtle shift in the seasons. Why? 5. There are two days a year when the sun is exactly lined up with the equator. What effect does this have on Earth? 6. What are the two dates when this occurs? 7. Many people gain weight in the fall, but it may be due to something more than Harvest Suppers, turkey, stuffing, gravy and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. What is the ‘other’ factor that may contribute to weight gain? 8. The Journal of Aging has found that babies born in the fall are more likely to… what? 9. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, that is Sep- tember 23 this year. Why was this so important for farmers 50, a hundred or more years ago? 10.The word equinox (the fall equinox and the spring equinox) comes from the Latin word which means _____.
