    Mary, Roseanne, and Carrie: Television and Fictional Feminism By Rachael Horowitz Television, as a cultural expression, is unique in that it enjoys relatively few boundaries in terms of who receives its messages. Few other art forms share television's ability to cross racial, class and cultural divisions. As an expression of social interactions and social change, social norms and social deviations, television's widespread impact on the true “general public” is unparalleled. For these reasons, the cultural power of television is undeniable. It stands as one of the few unifying experiences for Americans. John Fiske's Media Matters discusses the role of race and gender in US politics, and more specifically, how these issues are informed by the media. He writes, “Television often acts like a relay station: it rarely originates topics of public interest (though it may repress them); rather, what it does is give them high visibility, energize them, and direct or redirect their general orientation before relaying them out again into public circulation.” 1 This process occurred with the topic of feminism, and is exemplified by the most iconic females of recent television history. TV women inevitably represent a strain of diluted feminism. As with any serious subject matter packaged for mass consumption, certain shortcuts emerge that diminish and simplify the original message. In turn, what viewers do see is that much more significant. What the TV writers choose to show people undoubtedly has a significant impact on the understanding of American female identity. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.

While a student at SFSU, I directed the first production of Samuel Beckett’s 1965 TV drama Eh Joe. Eh Joe, a piece for television, written by Samuel Beckett who was present at my video taping in 1966. The first English broadcast was broadcast eventually on BBC2 (4th July 1967) with Jack MacGowran, for whom the play was specifically written, playing Joe. Samuel Beckett is world famous for writing the play: Waiting for Godot and many other works. While a Graduate student, I received a grant from IBM to do advanced engineering research experiments that resulted in the first practical computer generated film production images. My research project resulted in a practical system for producing these images, and this was used to create commercially broadcast computer images for CBS and PBS Network Broadcasts.     Making Feminism Popular: Audience Interpellation in Late Post-Network Era Television (a Case Study of TNT’s The Closer) by Ashley Elaine York A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology University of Alberta © Ashley Elaine York, 2016 Abstract This dissertation explores the serial design model of The Closer. It answers the following question: How does The Closer offer multiple entry points along a spectrum of views on gender and feminism, appeal to a range of viewers, and thus secure popularity? To generate metadata of how The Closer is designed for popularity by offering what film scholar Christine Gledhill calls “a range of positions of identification” with the text, using a Fiskean method of textual analysis, I examine the television codes of the transgender figure and the gaze in Chapters Three and Four (Gledhill 1988, 73). Each chapter offers a detailed analysis of a single episode of The Closer and theorizes how television codes of one episode are designed to take advantage of the coexistence of many possible interpretations of the theme under review. As counterpoint to my readings, in Chapter Two I analyze a focus group study conducted with forty-two sample viewers in Tucson, Arizona in 2013. Combining textual, industrial, and ethnographic audience analyses, I find that The Closer’s historic popularity is due to the ways its television codes broaden hegemonic discourses, break gender binaries, and relieve the dominant male gaze—that is, temporarily, subtly, and anachronistically. This smart serial design offers characterizations and content that chip away at hegemonic ideologies of gender over the series run.
