Summary Gibraltar is a colony of the United Kingdom, located in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The local security system is designed according to the British model. It, however, exhibits many specifics related to the small size and high population density of the respective territory. Keywords Gibraltar, security system, specifics, inspiration, comparison, international cooperation. 1 Vydává: Ochrana a bezpečnost o. s., IČ: 22746986 Lamačova 825/11, 152 00 Praha 5, http://ochab.ezin.cz, [email protected] Ochrana & Bezpečnost – 2016, ročník V., č. 1 (jaro), ISSN 1805-5656. Bc. To je především díky imigraci, neboť Gibraltar je žádaná lokalita k bydlení z důvodu skloubení anglického stylu života, teplého podnebí a daňových zákonů. 1 Rock of Gibraltar, Gibraltar. 4 RANDER Iam, An Aerial Photo of Gibraltar afterTake-off from the Rock. Flickr. 23. Bc. DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY (2000) McMaster University (Anthropology) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: A Tale of Four Caves: ESR Dating of Mousterian Layers at Iberian Archaeological Sites AUTHOR: Vito Volterra, M. A. (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Professor H. P. Schwarcz NUMBER OF PAGES: xviii, 250 Abstract This study was undertaken to provide supporting evidence for the late presence of Neanderthals in Iberia at the end of the Middle Paleolithic. This period is almost impossible to date accurately by the conventional radiocarbon method. Accordingly electron spin resonance (ESR) was used to obtain ages for four Spanish sites. They were EI Pendo in the Cantabrian north, Carihuela in Andalusia and Gorham's and Vanguard caves at Gibraltar. The sites were chosen to allow the greatest variety in geographic settings, latitudes and sedimentation. They were either under exca vation or had been excavated recently following modem techniques. A multidisciplinary approach to dating the archaeological contexts was being proposed for all the sites except EI Pendo whose deposits had been already dated but only on the basis ofsedimentological and faunal analyses. This was the first research program to apply ESR to such a variety ofsites and compare its results with that ofsuch a variety of other archaeometric dating teclmiques. The variety allowed a further dimension to the research that is the opportunity ofappraising first hand the applicability and advantages ofa new dating technique and determining its accuracy as an archaeological dating method incomparison with other techniques.

  • Cultural Contact Over the Strait of Gibraltar During the Middle
MUNIBE Antropologia-Arkeologia nº 68 33-47 DONOSTIA 2017 ISSN 1132-2217 • eISSN 2172-4555 Recibido: 2017-07-10 Aceptado: 2017-11-20 Cultural contact over the Strait of Gibraltar during the Middle Palaeolithic? Yvonne TAFELMAIER(1), Andreas PASTOORS(2) and Gerd-Christian WENIGER(3) ABSTRACT Possible contacts between hunter-gatherers of Northern Africa and Europe via the Strait of Gibraltar during the Pleistocene are still object to discussions. In the absence of significant fossil remains, debates are mainly based on similarities and differences of singular aspects of mate- rial culture. However, a theoretical framework for these discussions was lacking. The first aim of this study thus has been the development of a theoretical base. We therein included Maslow´s pyramid of basic needs. The idea of our approach is that the presence or absence of so-called cultural tracers identify either contact or disparity. A large database on archaeological sites of Morocco and Southern Iberia dating between 160 ka and 40 ka years ago has been compiled, containing information about lithic technology and typology, lithic raw material acquisition, subsistence patterns and symbolic behaviour. We formulated three potential contact scenarios between the two regions. The presence and/ or absence of so-called cultural tracers within the data set, that covered all levels of Maslow´s pyramid, led us to conclude that – based on the present archaeological and anthropological data - no contact took place between Iberian and North African populations across the Strait of Gibraltar in the given time frame.

  • Language Contact in Gibraltar English: a Pilot Study with ICE-GBR*
Alicante Journal of English Studies30 (2017): 94-120 Language contact in Gibraltar English: A pilot study with ICE-GBR* Lucía Loureiro-Porto [email protected] Cristina Suárez-Gómez [email protected] Universitat de les Illes Balears ABSTRACT The variety of English used in Gibraltar has been in contact with a number of European languages, such as Spanish, Italian, Hebrew and Arabic (Moyer, 1998: 216; Suárez-Gómez, 2012: 1746), for more than 300 years. Studies of this variety have traditionally been based on interviews and observation (e.g. Moyer, 1993, 1998; Cal Varela, 1996; Levey, 2008 2015; Weston, 2011, 2013, etc.), and a detailed morphosyntactic description is yet to be published. In this context, the compilation of a reliable Gibraltar corpus using the standards of the International Corpus of English (ICE) will constitute a landmark in the analysis of this lesser known variety of English. In the present paper we describe the ICE project and the current state of the compilation of ICE-GBR. In addition, we present a detailed comparison between the section on press news reports of ICE-GB (standard British English) and ICE-GBR, with the aim of identifying morphosyntactic features that reveal the influence of language contact with Spanish in this territory. We explore variables such as the choice of relativizer (assuming a higher preference for that in GBR, in agreement with Spanish que, the most frequent relativizer, Brucart, 1999: 490), the use of titles and pseudo-titles preceding proper names (which, as shown by Hundt and Kabatek, 2015, are very frequent in English journalese and extremely infrequent in Spanish), and the frequency of the passive voice (expected to be lower in ICE-GBR), among others.
