Other Research-Related Experience:

 I am currently in the process of developing a Masters degree in Marine Science and Climate Change to be offered by the University of Gibraltar.

 I have conducted surveys to establish abundances and distributions of four EU-protected (Annex IV of the Habitats Directive) species in the waters around Gibraltar. These species are: Patella ferruginea, Pinna nobilis, lithophaga lithophaga and Centrostephanus longispinus. In addition I have given presentations to local divers on endangered species identification and established collaborative relationships with local diving Clubs which resulted in regular reports of sightings of these species, together with an increased awareness of conservation priorities by the divers concerned. It is expected that a long-term monitoring programme will follow from the results of these surveys.

 I have been an active collaborator with and consultant to the Marine Biology Group from the University of Seville since 1991 when I participated in a five-year study of the Bay of Gibraltar (1991-1995). This same project was awarded the Grand International Prize in Marine Environmental Research (1998) by the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS - the World Underwater Federation). Since then I have co-supervised PhD students and contine to work closely with colleagues at this institution, having co-authored several publications with them. Moreover, due to having established links with U.K., Spanish and Gibraltar-based institutions and universities, I have been involved in both the co-ordinating of collaborative research projects between these and their funding, for example through EEC grants.

 I am also a principal investigator within the Gibraltar Caves Project which includes archaeologists and palaeontologists from the Natural History Museum in London (team leader Dr Chris Stringer), the Museum of El Puerto de Santa Maria (team leader Dr Francisco Giles Pacheco) and The Gibraltar Museum (team leader Professor ) who are excavating Neanderthal deposits in Gorham’s and Vanguard Caves on Gibraltar’s south-east coast. My main role is to organise and supervise the operation of the laboratories, where samples are processed and catalogued. This also involves creating, updating and using databases and related software, such as GIS. Due to my strengths in marine biology, ecology and statistics I am also involved in carrying out the sampling and classification of marine remains as well as the environmental and ecological reconstruction aspects of the project. Part of this project involved being lead partners in an EU-funded project (PALAEOMED) which ran from 2002-2004 and promoted collaborative work with other countries along the Mediterranean basin.

 I am co-director (along with Dr Geraldine Finlayson of the Gibraltar Museum Underwater Research Unit) of a number of on-going projects. These include: - As an extension of the Gibraltar Caves Project, a systematic programme to map and excavate Gibraltar’s underwater caves (see GIBRAMAR Project below); - In collaboration with the Nautical Archaeological Society, a project to locate, identify and map wrecks within Gibraltar’s waters using a GIS system; - A long-term systematic survey of the seabed around Gibraltar, recording aspects such as geology, substrate, marine habitats and species, etc; - The cannon pile project, which is surveying an underwater site with a number of early 19th-Century cannon with a view to their subsequent raising, conservation and display.

 I am assisting in on-going research (together with colleagues from the Marine Biology Laboratory of the University of Seville) within an EEC-funded MIGRES project aimed at studying the population dynamics and movements of the various cetacean communities within the Bay of Gibraltar, including the elucidation of the possible effects of various anthropogenic impacts on these creatures.

 I am a principal investigator within a NERC-funded EFCHED project (GIBRAMAR), which involves collaborations between the Gibraltar Museum, York University and Southampton University’s National Oceanography Centre, which is aimed at researching the undersea landscapes that would have been exposed during periods of low sea level (during glacial cycles), and which involves the mapping out features of the seabed using a variety of remote sensing and diving techniques. This includes the exploration and excavation of submarine caves.

 I have represented the as environmental consultant (Madrid, September 2000), where I worked with representatives from France, Spain and Portugal in the drafting of EEC INTERREG objectives and the preparation of the final proposals for the EU South-West European region (SUDOE).

 Collaborating with Dr Richard Jennings (University of Cork, Ireland) on his research work regarding the effects of climate and differences in landscape utilisation between Neanderthals and Modern Humans.

 Together with Museum colleagues Prof. Clive Finlayson and Dr Geraldine Finlayson, am collaborating with Jody Weissman (Ph.D. student) and Professors Christoph Zollikofer and Marcia Ponce de Leon (university of Zurich, ), an computer-based modelling of the effects of climatic variations in predator-prey systems in Pleistocene Eurasia.

 Currently collaborating with Dr Julie Ferguson (university of Berkeley, California) on the use of Stable isotopes in marine organisms as palaeothermometers, and investigating the effects of old carbon on 14C dating errors.

 Collaborating with Dr James Haile (University of Cambridge, UK) on the extraction of DNA from ancient shell material.

 I was a principal investigator within an EU-INTERREG – funded project which ran between 2002 and 2004 and involved a Mediterranean-wide study of prehistoric human populations along the coastal shelf. This subsequently evolved into the GIBRAMAR project.

 I have been directly involved in a number of Environmental Impact Assessments, both locally and internationally as part of a multi-national team of ecological and environmental specialists, and am also regularly consulted on both environmental (especially marine) and heritage-based aspects in EIAs carried out by other firms.
