    What Are Your Ex-Employees Taking with Them? Publication 3.13.13 Decades ago, it was reasonable to imagine that one could work for the same company from the start of one’s career to the end. Think about the world portrayed in Mad Men. Don Draper has mostly worked with the same fictional co-workers – Roger Sterling, Pete Campbell, Joan Harris, Bert Cooper, etc. – for the better part of a decade. This is not just a function of Matthew Weiner keeping the same actors around; it’s a relatively accurate portrayal of work in the 1960s. Times are different now. Workers change jobs (and often careers) with far more regularity than they did in the years following World War II. Medical practices are no different. They experience turnover just like other businesses. Each time an employee leaves – whether voluntarily or otherwise – he or she can depart with valuable information and patient relationships. The higher an employee’s perch in a practice, the more likely it is that he or she can go to a competitor and move patients in the process. Thus, the prudent medical practice decision-maker prepare for this possibility. The advice that you give patients on the proverbial ounce of prevention applies just as much to taking steps to prevent employees from taking your confidential information and patient relationships when they leave.     EXHIBITION FACT SHEET Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men March 14–September 6, 2015 (third-floor changing exhibitions gallery) Overview This new exhibition, about the creative process behind the television series Mad Men, features large-scale sets, memorable costumes, hundreds of props, advertising art used in the production of the series, and personal notes and research material from Matthew Weiner, the show’s creator, head writer, and executive producer. The exhibition offers unique insight into the series’ origins, and how its exceptional storytelling and remarkable attention to period detail resulted in a vivid portrait of an era and the characters who lived through it. Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men marks the first time objects relating to the production of the series will be shown in public on this scale. The exhibition was accompanied by a film series, Required Viewing: Mad Men’s Movie Influences, which featured ten films selected by Matthew Weiner that inspired the show. It ran March 14 through April 26, 2015. The exhibition coincides with the series’ final seven episodes, which aired on AMC from April 5–May 17, 2015. Highlights include: Two large-scale sets, including Don Draper’s SC&P office and the Draper family kitchen from their Ossining home. These sets were transported from Los Angeles where Mad Men was shot, and installed at the Museum using the original props from the show. Ellen Freund, who served as property master on Mad Men for seasons four through seven, dressed the sets for the Museum’s installation. A recreation of the writers’ room where Weiner and his team crafted story ideas and scripts for the series, complete with story notes for the first half of season seven listed on a white board, and index cards, research material, and other elements created and used by Mad Men’s writers.

    Chiara Settineri Mad Men: Gender, Work, and American Culture VMS 290 Prof. Lamm December 18, 2017 Outsider Outfits: Fashion and Difference in Mad Men AMC’s hit show Mad Men (2007-2015), created by Matthew Weiner, has been widely, critically praised for its stylistic aesthetic and meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Developing costumes on a show centered around facades, Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant intentionally and artfully crafts the exteriors of the characters and uses clothing pieces that are both true to the era and to the personalities of the characters on the show. Every ensemble reflects the feelings, aspirations, and identities of the individuals who bear them. In this paper, I argue that Mad Men specifically utilizes fashion to emphasize its theme of “the other,” using Helen Bishop, Peggy Olson, and Michael Ginsberg as sites of exploration. As a divorced, economically independent mother, a single working woman, and a Jewish copywriter, respectively, each of these characters represents a departure from the status quo of New York in the 60s. Their separation from the cultural norm is highlighted through their personal style, as each of them refuses to abide by the standards of dress in their own particular ways. Their different tastes not only indicate their distance from the other characters, but also express what exactly differentiates them; their clothing choices expose the ways in which the characters defy expectations placed on them, contributing to their characterization within the show. Helen, Peggy, and Michael participate in a society which champions homogeneity, but each of them subtly rebel against the norms through their clothing—causing enough disruption to create real change in the spheres they inhabit.

    REDUCING INEQUALITY WITH A RETROSPECTIVE TAX ON CAPITAL James Kwak* Inequality in the developed world is high and growing: in the United States, 1 % of the population now owns more than 40% of all wealth. In Capital in the Twenty-First Century, economist Thomas Piketty argues that inequality is only likely to increase: invested capital tends to grow faster than the economy as a whole, causing wealth to concentrate in a small number of hands and eventually producing a soci­ ety dominated by inherited fortunes. The solution he proposes, an an­ nual wealth tax, has been reflexively dismissed even by supporters of his overall thesis, and presents a number of practical difficulties. However, a retrospective capital tax-which imposes a tax on the sale of an asset based on its (imputed) historical values-can reduce the rate of return on investments and thereby slow down the growth of wealth inequality. A retrospective capital tax mitigates or avoids the administrative and constitutional problems with a simple annual wealth tax and can reduce the rate of return on capital more effectively than a traditional income tax. This Article proposes a revenue-neutral implementation of a retro­ spective capital tax in the United States that would apply to only 5% of the population and replace most existing taxes on capital, including the estate tax and the corporate income tax. Despite conventional wisdom, there are reasons to believe that such a tax could be politically feasible even in the United States today. MAD MEN, TROUBLED MOTHERS, AND SCARRED CHILDREN: REPRESENTATIONS OF TRAUMATIC PARENT-CHILD RELATIONSHIPS IN MAD MEN By Katarina Dulude An Honors Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for Honors In The Department of English Dulude 2 Introduction In the fourth episode of the last season of the critically acclaimed series Mad Men, one of the protagonists, Roger, is forced to track down his daughter Margaret after she abandons her husband and her young child. He finds her in a commune, and he puts on a good show to appear more accepting than her mother, but the following day he insists she return home. She refuses. He tells her, “I know everyone your age is running away and screwing around, but you can’t, you’re a mother,” and when she still refuses, he picks her up and tries to carry her towards a truck as she struggles in his arms and demands he let her go.

As consumerism keeps the capitalist economy growing, advertising then becomes of the utmost importance as a powerful force that influences the actions of millions in a somewhat subtle, but entirely significant, way. Therefore, correspondingly, the Madison Avenue advertising agency at the heart of AMC’s Mad Men set in the midst of America’s post-war economic boom becomes a locus of power circulation and increasingly fluid notions of identity, as the characters work at the common goal of enticing people to buy their clients’ wares, affecting the actions of each other within the office, as well as affecting the public in the bigger picture.
