Year 5 - Spring Term 2 - Week 3 - 8/3/2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Please find below a collection of the planned learning resources and activities for this week in your child’s year group. LI stands for learning intention and the following statement gives an idea of what we are hoping the children will learn from the set activities. Please use these resources and activities to offer your child learning opportunities whilst they are unable to come to school.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand some of the terminology, BBC Bitesize is a great source of support and information.

Other ideas for learning and supporting set activities:

 Spellzone offers some free games/activities for spelling.

 Top Marks offers free maths games linked to the National Curriculum.

 Reading is also a great use of time whilst stuck at home and the National Literacy Trust have lots of ideas for activities linked to reading and writing.

You might also want to use a year group isolation pack if you are looking for some further learning, which can be emailed to you if requested.

Underline the relative clause and circle the relative pronoun in each of these sentences.

1. Romeo came in disguise to the party which was being held by the Capulets.

2. At the party, he saw Juliet who was the daughter of his enemy.

3. Romeo was spotted by who hated him.

4. Tybalt was prevented from attacking Romeo by Lord Capulet who owned the house they were in.

5. Juliet, who was calling his name, wished Romeo would come.

Act 1 Scene 1 A deserted place. Thunder and lightning. Enter three Witches.

FIRST WITCH When shall we three meet again In thunder, lightning, or in rain? SECOND WITCH When the hurlyburly's done, When the battle's lost and won. Third Witch That will be ere the set of sun. First Witch Where the place? Second Witch Upon the heath. Third Witch There to meet with Macbeth. First Witch I come, Graymalkin! Second Witch Paddock calls. Third Witch Anon! ALL Fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air. [Exeunt]

 Who are the witches saying that they will meet?  What do you think might happen when they meet him?  Are they planning good or trouble?  How can you tell?

Here are the witches later on in the play. Try reading this aloud and using some of these techniques to make your reading or performance more interesting.

Act 4 Scene 1

A cavern. In the middle, a boiling cauldron. Thunder. Enter the three Witches

First Witch Round about the cauldron go; In the poison'd entrails throw. Toad, that under cold stone Days and nights has thirty-one Swelter'd venom sleeping got, Boil thou first i' the charmed pot. ALL Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Second Witch Fillet of a fenny snake, In the cauldron boil and bake; Eye of newt and toe of frog, Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg and owlet's wing, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. “Hail, Macbeth, Thane of Glamis!” called the first witch. “Hail Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor!” called the second. “Hail King Macbeth!” called the third. Macbeth was already the Thane of Glamis, but the witches were telling him he would be Thane of Cawdor and then King. Macbeth wanted to know how they could say this. Banquo listened carefully.

On the day that the war ended, two heroes of the day’s victory travelled towards their homes across a Scottish heath. Their names were Macbeth and Banquo. Suddenly they were confronted by moving shapes: witches.

Macbeth’s brain began to play tricks on him. He thought he saw, hanging in mid-air, the vision of a dagger. Its handle invited him to grasp it, to grasp the moment, to grasp the crown.

Macbeth wrote to his wife with the news. Ambition burned white-hot in her. When Macbeth arrived home she began to persuade him, to coax and bully him. She wanted him to take action to make the prophecy come true.

Hardly was there time to recover from this news before a dispatch rider came with word from Duncan, the King. ‘The Thane of Cawdor has proved traitor – allied himself to the enemy! King Duncan wishes you to have his title,” the rider told Macbeth. The first of the witches’ prophecies had come true. Macbeth wondered whether that meant that the rest would also come true.

TASK

In your groups of three you are going to take another scene and do the same thing. First work together to identify a single key word in each spoken part. Then take turns to play each part (Macbeth, Lors, Lady Macbeth) and practise performing using single words, adding gestures, expression and movement to tell the story.

Choose a writing task from the following options:  Writing in role as one of the characters, write a letter or diary entry that recounts a part of the story. If you are writing a letter, think about who your character would write to. This could be from any part in the story. You could write the letter from the beginning of the story that Macbeth writes to his wife.  Write a newspaper report about one of the many interesting and tragic events in the story.  Write a playscript for an alternative ending for the story.  Write a new poem/spell/chant for the witches, imagine they make a different or new prediction at the end - what could it be?

Art: Friday 12th March LI: To be able to practise portraits. We loved seeing your Tudor portraits that you sent in and brought into class. As with any skill that you are learning, practise is key to improving. This week we will be using last weeks lesson to help improve our portrait drawing skills. You should begin using a pencil to lightly sketch and then you can continue to use colouring in pencils or paint to complete a new portrait of either yourself, a classmate or a family member (if you are at home).
