Romeo and Juliet 2019-20 Study Guide ABOUT THIS STUDY GUIDE The Colorado Shakespeare Festival will send actors to your school soon as part of a Shakespeare & Violence Prevention project. This study guide is a resource for you, whether you are an administra- tor, counselor, teacher, or student. Our program is most successful when schools have prepared in advance, so we encourage you to use this study guide to connect the material to your curriculum. Shakespeare offers a wonderful opportunity to explore meaningful questions, and we encourage you and your students to engage deeply with those questions. Study guide written and edited by Dr. Amanda Giguere, Dr. Heidi Schmidt, and Isabel Smith-Bernstein. ABOUT SHAKESPEARE & VIOLENCE PREVENTION The Colorado Shakespeare Festival partners with CU Boulder’s Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) and the Department of Theatre & Dance to create a touring program that in- creases awareness of Shakespeare and violence prevention. Our actors will visit your school to perform an abridged three-actor version of Romeo and Juliet that explores the cycle of violence, using research from the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence. In this 45-minute performance, we draw parallels between Shakespeare’s world and our own. We recommend the performance for grades 6-12. Theatre is about teamwork, empathy, and change. When your students watch the play, they will observe mistreatment, cruelty, violence, and reconciliation. They’ll see examples of unhealthy and destructive relationships, as well as characters who become “upstanders”—people who make the choice to help. This play is intended to open up the dialogue about the cycle of violence and mis- treatment—and to remind us all that change is always possible. -

ROMEO & JULIET Student’s Book A play and film study guide Educasia Education in Context Before You Start… 1. You are about to read and watch the story of Romeo and Juliet. Look at the two pictures below, and try to answer the following questions: Who are Romeo and Juliet? What is their relationship? How will their relationship change throughout the story? How will the film and play be different? 2. Read the following introduction to the play, and answer the questions. This is the most famous of all Shakespeare’s plays, first printed in 1597. Romeo and Juliet meet, fall in love, and promise to be faithful to each other forever. Love is strong, but not as strong as family tradition, or hate, or revenge. Like young people all over the world, Romeo and Juliet want the right to decide their future for themselves, but in the end, their families are too powerful for them. Romeo and Juliet cannot live without each other, and if they are not allowed to marry and live together, there is only one way out. According to the introduction, are the following sentences true (T), false (F) or doesn’t it say (DS)? a. Romeo and Juliet have been lovers since they were children. b. The stage is empty, apart for the two NARRATORS, who stand one on each side of the stage. NARRATOR 1 Two families in Verona fair fight endlessly with swords and knives, and as our tale will shortly show two star-crossed lovers lose their lives. NARRATOR 2 The Montagues and Capulets can never find a path to peace till death and sorrow, pain and loss make parents see that war must cease. NARRATOR 1 The lovers in this tale of strife are Romeo and Juliet. They love – although their families cannot forgive, cannot forget. They exit the stage. 1 19 37 SONG 1 | MONTAGUES & CAPULETS (PAGe 18) The ensemble cast are split into houses of MONTAGUES and CAPULETS. MONTAGUES begin off-stage left, and CAPULETS off-stage right. Throughout the song one cast member from each family strides with purpose to a pre-determined point on the stage to meet their counterpart. They face up to one another and mime the process of antagonising their foe. By the end of the song the stage is full of MONTAGUE and CAPULET pairs confronting each other. -

Background Notes William Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare: A brief biography • Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon, England to an upper/ middle class family. Shakespeare: A brief biography • He learned Latin and Greek history in his grammar school as a child. This would explain the Latin and Greek references in his works. • There is not evidence that Shakespeare continued his schooling after elementary school. Shakespeare: A Brief Biography In 1582 at the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway who was 26. She was pregnant before they were married. Shakespeare: A Brief Biography • After a few years of marriage, Shakespeare left Stratford-on-Avon and his family for London to pursue his career in acting and writing. Shakespeare: A Brief Biography • Shakespeare wrote and acted with The Lord Chamberlain’s Men. This was an acting troupe that would perform during Shakespeare’s time. ROMEO AND JULIET: PRESS RESPONSES Headlong, UK tour (2012) Directed by Robert Icke www.roberticke.com THE OBSERVER Kate Kellaway I watched Romeo and Juliet in the company of several Southampton school parties – bracing myself for a noisy night ahead. But Headlong, a touring company of generous unpredictability, offers here a production to silence outspoken schoolchildren and docile adults alike. You've got a delinquent in the class? That is nothing to what we have on stage. Everyone knows someone like Tom Mothersdale's exhibitionist Mercutio – charismatic, insecure, flaunting tasteless velvet trousers. And we have all met friendly, drunken fat boys like Danny Kirrane's Benvolio, swigging vodka until their eyes glaze over. But not one of us will have seen a Romeo and Juliet like this before. What makes this such an extraordinary show is not its wit, its modern dress or its music (the Boomtown Rats' hit "I Don't Like Mondays" features), nor the liberties taken with the text (Shakespeare survives unperturbed). It is its focus on the power of teenage love. In Robert Icke's unfettered production, Romeo and Juliet are not attempting to embody a lofty romantic ideal. Romeo, convincingly played by Daniel Boyd, is callow, naive and a wearer of espadrilles. But when love comes, he can't resist. And when he speaks Shakespeare's most romantic lines, one feels he is trying the language on for size, hoping to impress Juliet, wanting to be grown up. Catrin Stewart's Juliet is one of the most captivating and touching I have seen. Her excitement, playfulness, way of jumping for joy suggest the child she so recently was. -
