View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Iowa Research Online The Writing of Andersonville MacKINLAY KANTOR Nearly thirty years ago The University of Iowa Libraries received, as a gift from Iowa author MacKinlay Kantor, the original manuscript of Kantor’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel Andersonville. The “manuscript” of this Civil War novel, which concerns the notorious Confederate prison camp for Union soldiers in southern Georgia, consists of a series of author’s notes, several successive drafts or revisions, a final manuscript, and proof pages as well as an international file of press clippings. At the request of the library director Mr. Kantor subsequently prepared the following account of the writing of Andersonville, which is published here with the permission of the author’s son, Tim Kantor. Editor This discussion of the writing of Andersonville should serve as an adequate explanatory outline for full understanding of the manuscript— its appearance and condition. I started writing the novel on December 16, 1953, and finished it on May 25, 1955. The first few pages (beginning with the scene where Ira Claffey walks through the woods away from his plantation) were written on my old L. C. Smith typewriter, for sentimental reasons. This is a machine rebuilt from two other old L. C. Smiths—the one used by my mother throughout her editing of the Webster City Daily News (1921-1925) and another (second-hand) one which I bought during those years for my own use. Later, as the typewriters began to show wear and tear despite frequent overhaulings, the two were built into one machine. -

The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The -

iii The Excessive Present of Abolition: The Afterlife of Slavery in Law, Literature, and Performance A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School Of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Jesse Aaron Goldberg May 2018 iv © 2018 Jesse Aaron Goldberg v THE EXCESSIVE PRESENT OF ABOLITION: THE AFTERLIFE OF SLAVERY IN LAW, LITERATURE, AND PERFORMANCE Jesse Aaron Goldberg, Ph.D. Cornell University The Excessive Present of Abolition reframes timescales of black radical imaginaries, arguing that Black Atlantic literary and performative texts and traditions resist periodization into past, present, and future. Their temporalities create an excessive present, in which the past persists alongside a future that emerges concurrently through forms of daily practice. I intervene in debates in black studies scholarship between a pessimistic view that points backward, arguing that blackness is marked by social death, and an optimistic view that points forward, insisting that blackness exceeds slavery’s reach. Holding both views in tension, I illuminate the “excess” that undermines this binary. The law’s violence in its rendering of black bodies as fungible exceeds its capacity for justice, and yet blackness exceeds the reach of the law, never reducible to only the state of abjection conjured by the structuring power of white supremacy. I theorize the excessive present through literature and performance in contrast to legal discourse – notably the 1783 British case Gregson v Gilbert, which is striking because it records a massacre of 131 people as an insurance case, not a murder case. May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays. -

American Literature Laila The Paris Paradox: Amine Colorblindness and Colonialism in African American Expatriate Fiction In fiction by Richard Wright, James Baldwin, and Wil- liam Gardner Smith, the literary trope of the romance between black American men and white European women symbolizes African Ameri- cans’ newly held freedom in Paris after World War II, but it obscures France’s own color line. Many African American expatriates consid- ered the city a refuge from the daily frustrations of second-class citizen- ship at home and Joseph McCarthy’s witch hunt of the black radical Left. The Parisian interracial romance, which juxtaposes the subjuga- tion of black men in the United States with their liberation in Paris, con- structs a utopian horizon that emphasizes the equality of black and white men and frames American lynching as an anomaly; Paris is a space where freedom is supposedly achieved and manhood recovered. Even in the rare pessimistic visions of the French capital and interracial romance that permeate Wright’s 1959 “Island of Hallucination,” the author insists on Paris being a place with “no race prejudice” (190). And yet, African American exiles knew no one in Paris was color- blind. One only need remember the sight of a semi-nude Josephine Baker in banana skirt gyrating her hips in la danse sauvage, or Bald- win’s exasperation when asked if he played the trumpet, or Chester Himes and Richard Gibson’s fear of getting caught in anti-Algerian police raids.1 Even in the domain of interracial romance, it was rarely French women who were involved with black American men.
