Tiger James weighed in at 5lbs 12 oz and is growing well! And congratulations too to Denise and Vinny Brown who on 16th January became proud parents of Lucas Charles. Lucas weighed in at 7lb 13oz! Unfortunately illness meant that our President, Air Marshal Cliff Spink and his wife Caroline were unable to join us this year. Cliff was going to tell those present about his Spitfire (pictured below). It is a Mk XVI with a clear view canopy. It was built in 1944 and is very much original, still with the same wings for example. It is powered by a Rolls Royce/Packard Merlin of 1600hp. The aircraft didn‟t see active service but did serve on several RAF squadrons including the RAuxAF. It is painted in the scheme of the 2nd Tactical Air Force which was worn between D Day and the advanced into Germany. -

Squadron Leader Roger Joyce Bushell Roger Bushell is famously remembered as “Big X”, the mastermind and driving force behind what is arguably the most audacious prisoner of war escape of the Second World War. The story of the breakout later became immortalized on film in “The Great Escape”, based on the best-selling book of the same name by fellow prisoner, Paul Brickhill. This has largely overshadowed other aspects of his life, his pre-war flying experiences and his, albeit, short wartime role within the RAF. Roger Joyce Bushell was born in 1910 in South Africa to an English gold- mining engineer. At the age of 10 he was sent to boarding school at Wellington in England. Following this he spent time at Grenoble University, becoming a proficient linguist in French and German before going to Cambridge in 1929. Whilst there, he indulged in his non-academic passions including acting, rugby and skiing. It was also whilst at Cambridge that Bushell took up his other great passion: flying. In 1932 he joined 601 Squadron Auxiliary Air Force as a Pilot Officer. 601 Squadron was otherwise known as “The Millionaires’ Squadron” because most of its members were wealthy young men, paying their way to learn how to fly at the weekend. Many of these men were also fellow skiers, such as Max Aitken, who joined the squadron in 1934 following some encouragement from Bushell. Bushell won his wings in June 1933 and was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer 8 months later. On graduating from Cambridge with a law degree, Bushell was called to the Bar in 1934. -

A “POW Rolex” Recalls the Great Escape by Alan Downing Click the images to view larger versions On May 12-13 th, Antiquorum Geneva will hold its second auction of 2007, in which nearly 696 watches and clocks will be auctioned off. On this occasion, two lots, No 311 and 312 will be sold and we are proud to share with you the wonderful story of lot No. 311. We warmly thank Mr Alan Downing, who we met at our Antiquorum Office in Geneva three weeks ago, for sharing with us the exceptional story of this Pow Rolex. Following a very interesting discussion with Mr Downing and thanks to the rich illustrative material he provided us with, we hereby present the story of this Rolex Oyster which belonged to Mr Clive James Nutting, Corporal in the Royal Corps of Signals, who was a prisoner in Stalag Luft III from 1939 to 1945. This essay written by Alan tells us the story of Clive Nutting and shows how Rolex (and other watch factories) were engaged in the regular supply of watches to men incarcerated in Prisoner of War camps like Stalag Luft III (located at Sagan, 100 miles southeast of Berlin, at present Poland). This camp is probably the most famous of all Prisoner of War Camps due to it being the scene of the great escape of march 1944 and the subsequent making of the 1962 film of the same name. We are pleased to share this story, provided by Alan, and photos with the TimeZone community in advance of the catalog's publication. -

Many aspects of the story were altered for commercial reasons. None of the actual escapees were American, for instance, and none of the escape attempts involved stolen motorcycles, or hijacked Messerschmitts. Most characters in the film were amalgams of many men rather than single individuals and the ‘The Fifty’ to who the film is dedicated were not machine- gunned in one place at the same time, as depicted in the film, but shot in small groups, in different locales, over many days. Much of what the film does depict, however, is correct, the way sought-after items—tools, identity papers, supplies—were fabricated or otherwise obtained, as well as, the inventive technologies employed in the planning of the escape and the construction of the tunnel. -

CHAPTER 1 9 EVADERS AND PRISONER S O aircrew flying from English or Middle East bases the possibilit y T of falling into enemy hands was a continual danger. After 1940 , with air operations conducted principally over areas held by Germany an d Italy, every flight contained the seed of disaster, whether from enemy gun or fighter defences, adverse meteorological conditions, human erro r in navigation or airmanship, mechanical failure, or petrol shortage. Fre- quently, in dire straits, a captain of aircraft was forced to make the har d choice of ordering his crew to parachute into enemy territory or o f attempting to struggle back to base with the last and vital part of th e journey necessarily over the unrelenting sea . It is a measure of the resolution of British airmen that where any slim possibility existed the harder choice was taken, even though very frequently it ended in failure. Pilot Officer R. H. Middleton, Flight Sergeant A. McK. McDonald, Flying Officer A . W. R. Triggs and many others brought their crew s safely back to fight again by renouncing immediate safety at - the cost of freedom, but many Australians, in common with comrades of other Allied nations, perished in attempting the same achievement . Even though forced to abandon their aircraft over hostile territory , airmen were still not without hope if they reached the ground uninjured . The vast majority of R .A.A.F. men serving in England between 194 1 and 1945 operated with Bomber Command on night-bombing sorties , and when an aircraft was set afire, or exploded, or became uncontrollable a varying degree of opportunity was afforded for crew members to escape from their doomed aircraft. -

He was 83 and was laid to rest at Torquay Crematorium. Denzl was with the Tigers at the time of their transition from Spitfires to Meteors and we published a few of his stories about experiences with the new jet fighter in previous editions of Tiger News. Those of you who were at Duxford last September at the RAF ACE event will have had the privilege of meeting Denzl who was there with his son Robert. We also say goodbye to Jack Thornton who died in February aged 91. Jack was a Tiger between July 1941 (when they were at Acklington) and April 1946 and was a Fitter IIE (Repair and Inspection.) This was Jack’s only posting and when he was demobbed in 1946 he had attained the rank of Corporal. And to Sqn Ldr Peter Pressley AFC who was with 74 from September 1951 to October 1953 at RAF Horsham St Faith, serving as Flying Officer and then Flight Lieutenant on the squadron. Our collective thoughts are with the families of Denzl, Jack and Peter. Churchill’s Cortege. You may recall from previous Tiger News` that Canadian Associate Member Colin Musson has been trying to trace the names of The Few chosen to accompany Churchill’s coffin at his funeral. -

Wald, a Marinette, Wisconsin native, discusses his career in the Air Force, including being held as a German prisoner of War during World War II. Wald talks about enlisting in the Air Corps in 1941 and being based at Tyndall Field (Florida) when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. He mentions being rejected for pilot and glider training, graduating from gunnery school and aerial gunners’ armament school, and having repeated complications with outdated medical records. In Boise (Idaho), Wald discusses forming a flight crew, flying a B-24 to Europe, and assignment to the 392 nd Bomb Group, 578 th Bomb Squadron, 8 th Air Force based in Wendling (England). He details being shot down on his second mission: losing three of four engines, the failure of the bailout alarm, and having no memory of his jump. After regaining consciousness in a French farmhouse, he talks about being sheltered by the French resistance for two weeks before being captured by the Gestapo. Wald talks being moved from the jail in Rouen to Luftwaffe headquarters in Paris, staying in the Rennes prison, and being held in solitary confinement in Frankfurt (Germany).
