1 Pagan Beliefs in Ancient Russia. By Luceta di Cosimo, Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, Aethelmearc. [email protected] ©2006-2017 Slavic mythology is a difficult subject. The historical evidence is fragmented, with many conflicting sources and multiple later literary inventions. This is a brief reconstruction of ancient Russian mythology. The first archaeological findings that can be attributed to Slavs date to approximately 6th c. AD. The origins of Slavs are still debated. The pagan Slavic society was an oral society. Christianity, which introduced writing, was more concerned with eradication rather than preservation of pagan beliefs. No one really tried to preserve and record whatever remained, until late period. Then, there is some evidence recorded from the Germans who visited Russia in 18th c., but a lot of it is based on the written 15thc. sources, rather than eyewitness accounts. The 19th c. Europe saw renewed interest in folklore, and combined with rise of nationalism and need for developed mythos, a lot of what was left was recorded, but a lot was altered to make it more palatable, and questionable things (especially with fertility rituals) were edited out as not to besmirch the emerging national character. During the Soviet time, the study of any religion was problematic, due to mandatory atheism. Eventually, the study of the early Slavic traditions was permitted, and even encouraged, but, everything had to pass stringent censorship rules, and could not contradict Marxist-Leninist philosophy. So, people who had the material (in the USSR) could not publish, and people who actually could publish (in the West) did not have access to the materials. -

MIRATOR 11:1/2010 1 Ritual and History: Pagan Rites in the Story of the Princess’ Revenge (the Russian Primary Chronicle, under 945–946) 1 Aleksandr Koptev Introduction The Kievan prince Igor is known to have been murdered by tribesmen of the tributary Drevljans during a journey he made to their country with the purpose of collecting the tribute. The case is described in the Primary Chronicle under the year 945: 6453 (945). In this year, Igor’s retinue said to him, ‘The servants of Sveinald are adorned with weapons and fine raiment, but we are naked. Go forth with us, oh Prince, after tribute, that both you and we may profit thereby’. Igor´ heeded their words, and he attacked Dereva in search of tribute. He sought to increase the previous tribute and collected it by violence from the people with the assistance of his followers. After thus gathering the tribute, he returned to his city. On his homeward way, he said to his followers, after some reflection, ‘Go forward with the tribute. I shall turn back, and rejoin you later’. He dismissed his retainers on their journey homeward, but being desirous of still greater booty he returned on his tracks with a few of his followers. The Derevlians heard that he was again approaching, and consulted with Mal, their prince, saying, ‘If a wolf comes among the sheep, he will take away the whole flock one by one, unless he be killed. If we do not thus kill him now, he will destroy us all’. Svetlana M. Tolstaya, 2017, Moscow: Indrik, pp. 264. Biblyoteka Instituta Slavyanovedeniya RAN. The impressive list of works produced by the Moscow school of ethnolinguistics has been enriched by a new publication. The book continues the tradition of a series devoted to the key semantic categories of language and culture. It offers a coherent set of articles dealing with the issues of anthropocentrism and the language and culture of Slavs in particular. The collection opens with an article by Svetlana M. Tolstaya, “Humanisation of reality: remarks on anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism in language and culture”, devoted to the basic aspects of anthropocentrism. Thanks to the duality of anthropocentric perception, we can exist simultaneously as an object of interpre- tation through external cultural codes and as a subject that acquires knowledge of the world through him- or herself. The author notes that, because our perception of the world is subjective, the subjectivity of worldview is one of the central aspects of anthropocentrism. This was shown by researchers from Lublin (Bartmiński and Anna Pajdzińska 2008; Bartmiński, Niebrzegowska-Bartmińska, and Nycz 2004). Tolstaya scrutinises the ways and mechanisms that relate to the “humanisation” of worldview in folk language and culture, relying on the methodology proposed by Yuriy Apresyan, together with his concept of naïve (everyday) worldview. Teleo- logical and genealogical elements are discussed in detail. -

Krakow. Anthropologies of Heritage [ENGLISH] (special supplement of “Tygodnik Powszechny” nr 28/2019) A TARTAR ON HORSEBACK The Lajkonik – a rider on a wooden horse, carrying a mace and wearing a crescent-topped pointed hat – is among the most popular symbols of Kraków. JAN GRACZYŃSKI / EAST NEWS This figure is a reference both to historical events (the 13th-century Tartar invasions) and half-legendary stories about the city being saved by rafters from Zwierzyniec. In times past, the Lajkonik would participate in each Corpus Christi procession, walking alongside members of the rafters’ guild. When, in the late 18th century, figures in “weird” and “risible” outfits were forbidden from participating in this Catholic celebration, the Lajkonik Festival was moved to the day closing the octave of Corpus Christi (i.e. the Thursday of the week after the feast). Today, the prancing Lajkonik stops traffic in the streets of Kraków, and 1 Krakow. Since 2014, the Lajkonik Festival in Kraków has been included in the national list of intangible cultural heritage. THE WAWEL DRAGON The oldest Kraków legends written down at the beginning 13th century by the Bishop of Kraków and historian of Poland, Wincenty Kadłubek, tell of a ferocious man-eating dragon which lived in a cave under Wawel Hill in the early days of the city and terrorized the local inhabitants. It is said that the monster was defeated by trickery, when instead of a real animal it was fed calf skin stuffed with sulphur. -

Chthonic aspects of the Pomeranian deity Triglav and other tricephalic characters in Slavic mythology Luka Trkanjec This article explores the nature of West Slavic deity Triglav, postulating he was pri- mary a god of the underworld. Parallels that connect Triglav with chthonic beings from Slavic folklore are highlighted, notably dragons and serpents, and with three-headed characters of more ancient Indo-European myths. Keywords: Triglav, Trojan, three-headed, triune deities, dragon, Pomerania, Slavic mythology, Aži Dahāka, Viśvarūpa, Geryon, Indo-European mythology The cult of the West-Slavic god Triglav (‘Three-headed’) is relatively well de- scribed in medieval sources documenting the conversion of the Pomeranian duchy on the shores of Baltic, through the efforts of the German bishop and saint Otto of Bam- berg. The events of his two missionary tours there (first one in 1124-5, second in 1128) were recorded by the bishop’s principal biographers, Ebbo and Herbordus, together with some details of pre-Christian beliefs and traditions that the saint had to over- come. Ebbo in particular, in his Vita Ottonis episcopi Bambergenis, gives two reports (II:13, III:1) that offer some valuable insight into Pomeranian beliefs about Triglav. Based on these accounts, most researchers and popularisers of Slavic mythology tend to assume that such a three-headed god actually represents a unity of three dei- ties: a divine triad, or even some sort of pagan Trinity. Others, however, have noted a darker streak in this mythic character. Both Čajkanović (1994:79-80) and Čausidis (2005:448) speculate he was a chthonic deity, while Gieysztor (1982:125) sees in him a north-western variant of Veles, proto-Slavic god of dead. -

Slovanske Mitologije
STUDIA MSLAVICA 16 ZGODOVINA Nikolaj Aleksandrovič Mihajlov (Moskva, 11. 6. 1967–Videm, 25. 5. 2010) je študiral klasično flologijo na moskovski Državni univerzi M. V. SLOVANSKE Lomonosova, kjer je leta 1989 diplomiral. Študij je nadaljeval v Inštitutu za slavistiko in balkanistiko pri akademiku Vladimirju N. Toporovu, ki je bil MITOLOGIJE skupaj z Vjačeslavom V. Ivanovom eden od ute- meljiteljev ruske mitosemiotične šole. Doktoriral V XX. STOLETJU je leta 1998 na Univerzi v Leidnu pri priznanem nizozemskem slavistu Frederiku Kortlandtu na temo jezikovnih spomenikov zgo- dnje slovenščine. Med letoma 1992 in 1998 je predaval ruski jezik in slovansko mitologijo na Univerzi v Pisi, med leti 1993 in 1995 je bil tudi predavatelj ruščine na univerzi v Trentu, leta 1998 pa je postal profesor slovenščine in predstojnik katedre za slovenistiko na Univerzi v Vidmu. Vse do svoje smrti je urejal revijo Studia mythologica Slavica, katere soustanovitelj je bil. • Knjiga priznanega ruskega jezikoslovca in semiotika Nikolaja Mihajlova odraža avtorjevo izjemno poznavanje slovanskih virov in zgodovinskih premikov na področju raziskovanja slovanske mi- tologije. Predstavlja poglobljeno, teoretično in strokovno podprto analizo del raziskovalcev slovanske mitologije skozi stoletja, ob tem pa so na podlagi prvotnih virov in vseh drugotnih podatkov, prido- bljenih s pomočjo sorodnih ved, kot so lingvistika, toponomastika, arheologija in predvsem folkloristika, predstavljena tudi verovanja slovanskih narodov.
