This phenomenon is analyzed in two different but complementary studies and perspectives, each of which contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic factors that constrain its variation, as well as the social meanings of this feature in Argentina. Study 1 investigates whether position in the intonational phrase (IP), vowel concordance, and social class and gender condition pretonic vowel lengthening from informal conversations with native speakers (n=20). -

Constraints on Structual Borrowing in a Multilingual Contact Situation Abstract Many principles of structural borrowing have been proposed, all under qualitative theories. Some argue that linguistic conditions must be met for borrowing to occur (‘universals’); others argue that aspects of the socio-demographic situation are more relevant than linguistic considerations (e.g. Thomason and Kaufman 1988). This dissertation evaluates the roles of both linguistic and social factors in structural borrowing from a quantitative, variationist perspective via a diachronic and ethnographic examination of the language contact situation on Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao, where the berian creole, Papiamentu, is in contact with Spanish, Dutch, and English. Data are fro m texts (n=171) and sociolinguistic interviews (n=129). The progressive, the passive construction, and focus fronting are examined. In addition, variationist methods were applied in a novel way to the system of verbal morphology. The degree to which borrowed morphemes are integrated into Papiamentu was noted at several samplings over a 100-year time span. -

Background of Study As human beings, people can not be separated from the process of communication. In their lives, people need to interact with others since they can’t live by themselves. Through communication process, people can change their minds, ideas, thoughts, and intentions. They can also deliver messages to others. In conducting communication, people need a medium to express their intentions and messages. The most appropriate medium is language since language can carry a message by symbols. This is in line with what has been suggested by Wardaugh (1992: 8) who states that ―Language allows people to say things to each other and expresses communicate needs‖. In short, language is constantly used by humans in their daily life as a means of communication. Language is very important in social interaction. In interlace good relation, people will use appropriate language that can be understood by others in particular event. Some communities have their own language that is used in daily activity which different with other communities. Every community have different characteristic from their culture which determined the variety of language that they use. Some of them make uncommon languages that only can be understood by the member of communities in order to keeping their attribute or keeping a secret. Family relation, work place, friendship, and social class also can be causes of language varieties. Beside language varieties, changed or mix a language to another can be the way to establish a communication depend on who is the partner and the context. -

Its origins are deeply rooted in earliest twentieth-century Argentine life, particularly in the barrios of Buenos Aires, where tensions of culture, race, class, sexuality and privilege clashed head on. Because tango is historically and popularly accepted as a heterosexual dance, little attention has focused on its very earliest development and practices, when men often partnered with other men to learn it. This practice was so common that in 1903 the Argentine magazine Caras y Caretas [Faces and Masks] published a series of photographs portraying two men dancing tango to illustrate its basic steps and maneuvers. Inside this early practice lie uninterrogated questions on issues of sexual preference, identity and homosexuality. -

journal of language contact 8 (2015) 112-145 brill.com/jlc Italian-Spanish Contact in Early 20th Century Argentina Juan Antonio Ennis conicet/Universidad de La Plata [email protected] Abstract This article attempts to provide a general approach to the exceptional language contact situation that took place in Argentina from the end of the 19th century until the first decades of the 20th century, in which an enormous immigration flow drastically modified the sociolinguistic landscape. This was most evident in urban environments—and among them especially the Buenos Aires area—and led the local ruling elites to set up a complex and massive apparatus for the nationalisation of the newcomers, which included a language shift in the first stage. Given that the majority of immigrants came from Italy, the most widespread form of contact was that between the local varieties of Spanish and the Italian dialects spoken by the immigrants, which led to the creation of a contact variety called Cocoliche that arose, lived then perished. Although this contact variety did not survive the early years, at least not as a full- fledged variety, the history of its emergence and the ways in which it can be studied today nevertheless make it an object of special interest for research perspectives ori- ented around the question of the early years of language contact. This article gives an account of this history so as to provide an analysis of a series of documents that, in a highly mediated way, can be used as an unreliable but nonetheless interesting corpus for the study of language and culture contact. -

TRADUCIR / TRADUZIR BORGES La experiencia brasileña Jorge Schwartz Al aceptar de la editorial Globo de São Paulo la propuesta de coordinar las traducciones de las Obras Completas de Borges para el portugués, tuve un primer momento de ingenua alegría al pensar que tendría el privilegio de ser contratado para leer minuciosamente toda la obra del Autor a quien he dedicado años de instigante lectura y docencia. También pensé en el desafío de poder ofrecer finamente al público brasileño un Borges fidedigno y, en la medida de lo posible, un Borges casi tan fascinante como el original y con los tradicionales errores del ‘portuñol’ finalmente erradicados. Imaginé una tarea prolongada y árdua por delante, pero no calculé los riesgos que se presentarían durante esta trayectoria. Hoy, en medio del camino y con un tomo todavía por delante, hablar de cuestiones de traducción en Borges y de los desdoblamientos en el pasaje para el portugués, significa sin duda un tema – no para una conferencia, pero para una tesis doctoral! La primera preocupación era establecer los criterios teóricos que rigiesen los tomos. Tropezamos al inicio con la imposición contractual de que las Obras Completas publicadas en el Brasil deberían seguir exactamente las características de los cuatro tomos editados por Emecé de la Argentina. Por eso la semejanza gráfica de la producción editorial de la Globo. Lo que inicialmente nos pareció una restricción, terminó irónicamente convirtiéndose en el mayor desafío: una edición sin notas explicativas, dejando para el talento individual de cada uno de los traductores la posibilidad de hacer de la obra de Borges un texto en portugués digno del propio Borges. -
