PAULO – Medidas vitoriosas e desafios da cultura / Artigo / Fábio de Sá Cesnik...... 51 2 CINEMA E TV The News Tribe (Paquistão) - Brazilian film festival kicks off in Islamabad Brazilian film festival kicks off in Islamabad (27/2/2012) Islamabad: The Brazilian film festival has kicked off in Islamabad which will continue till March 4 on the Brazilian embassy premises. “Pakistanis don`t know much about Brazil beyond football and some other things and we wanted to showcase our culture for them through this festival,” Thomaz Mayer, first secretary at the embassy, was quoted as saying. “There are no regular movie theaters in Islamabad so we want to offer people something interesting,” added Mayer. The schedule is given below. (Sunday – February 26) ‘The Year My Parents Went on Vacation’: In 1970 Brazil is faced both with both the ecstasy of a Football World Cup victory and the drama of a military dictatorship. In this context a ten-year-old boy is left by his politically persecuted parents to live in a migrant neighbourhood of Sao Paulo where he will learn hard lessons about tolerance solidarity and friendship. (Monday – February 27) ‘Lisbela and the Prisoner’: In this light hearted comedy set in rural Brazil, a charming and nomadic con-man meets the love of his life — a young woman who is passionate about old movies. But to be together they must evade a dangerous and jealous hit man and his mysterious wife. (Tuesday – February 28) ‘Blindness’: After a city is ravaged by instant blindness and the government over reacts society breaks down and chaos ensues. The only woman whose sight is unaffected by the plague leads a group of seven strangers into safety and salvation. (English, adult content) (Wednesday – February 29) ‘Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures’: While WWII devastates Europe a German pacifist drives his truck across northeastern Brazil to sell aspirin in small villages using advertisement movies to promote the medicine. He meets and befriends a humble yet savvy Brazilian assistant but the unpredictable flow of history will force him to make difficult choices. (English subtitles, adult content) (Thursday – March 01) ‘Bossa Nova’: This delightful romantic comedy depicts a love triangle between an American teacher of English, a lawyer and travel agent amid the sumptuous scenery and thrilling music of Rio de Janeiro. (English sub-titles, adult content) (Friday – March 02) ‘Behind the Sun’: It’s 1910 in the arid hinterlands of North Eastern Brazil Ordered by his father to avenge the death of his older brother a young man questions the tradition of violence between two rival families. The arrival of a travelling circus changes everything. Based on the award winning novel “Broken April,’ by Ismail Kadare. (English sub-titles) (Saturday – March 03) ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’: The story of a motorcycle road trip Ernesto Guevara went on in his youth across South America before becoming the legendary ‘Che.’ (English, adult content) 3 (Sunday – March 04) ‘Central Station’: An elderly former school teacher of Rio de Janeiro who writes letters for illiterate persons helps a young boy in search for the father he never knew — a life-changing journey across the countryside of Brazil. Received more than 30 Film Awards. (English sub-titles, coarse language). The embassy will be open to cinemagoers from 5 p.m., tea and coffee will be served before the movies, which will be screened promptly at 5:30 p.m. Reservations must be made in advance by dialling 2287129 from 10 a.m. -3 p.m. or by email [email protected] and are subject to seat availability.
